I just bought a 2006 Virago 250 from my friend. I just took the motorcycle class last month to get my drivers license endorsement. Until I test drove my friend's Virago a couple weeks ago, the most powerful motorcycle I had rode in my life was the Yamaha Trail Way 200 at the class lol I had a hell of a time getting the Virago home from my friend's place! He hadn't ridden it in a while, so the battery was dead. I also didn't realize that the gas tank was empty. I ended up breaking down on the side of the interstate a few times during the usually about half hour drive. It seems like it's been running better since then, since I charged the battery, but I still can't close the choke all the way. I have an appointment to get it serviced in a couple weeks. I really wanted a sport bike, but I'm glad that I gave this one a chance! It's so comfortable, and the seat is so low! I rode around the neighborhood this past weekend, and practiced slow speed maneuvers like U turns, because that's where I had the most difficulty in the class. I remembered to keep my head up and use the rear brake only (for slow speed).

I am huge fan of the Virago, but I got my licenses on a Honda Rebel. Basically the same all the way around as well as the Yamaha Vstar. I Love all of these bikes for beginners. I also like the Ninja 250/300/500 these are great bikes as well. I have a Vstar that I am riding now. I just did a little short on it. I am working on a Ninja 250, getting it ready for sale. I love them all!!

On, is designed to move fuel from the tank to the carbs while the engine is running, by means of the vacume line going to the intake manifold from the fuel pump. I believe the pressure build up of the fuel system will and can allow fuel to push through the carb into the combustion chamber and then past the rings eventually into the oil. Imagine now you have filler the crankcase with a nice mix of gas and oil, the air pressure in the crank case is now trying to push oil and gas mix through all the engine seals. so I am changing to a electric fuel filter, with a pet cock that shuts the fuel off, the only sure way to prevent the gas in the oil. Remember the front of the frame under the air filter is the air intake, check it for oil too.

I searched depths of utube for clues when my 07 was leaking from a frame bolt (bolts opposite of the air filter mount - low side of frame on the stand). Same gas/oil mix just after having clutch replaced & oil change. It overflowed into the frame near airbox,, etc. In short; fresh oil at correct level and not a drop/leak since.My theory... Ran out of gas on my way home.from mechanic. My theory is oil was overfilled or the petcock was perhaps turned to prime at some point in testing and dumped gas. It's been on the reserve setting ever since and zero problems. Bike is a commuter & never sits longer than a few winter weeks however.

I am sure you have it figured out now, but a stuck float valve will cause fuel to get into the oil as well.

Hello. Bingo on the contaminated oil from a non-functioning fuel petcock. Our shop has recently had two Yamahas come in with bad oil leaks. Japapanese bikes generally just don't have bad oil leaks. One was a 1100 twin and the most recent was a 1992 Yamaha Virago with 6000 miles on it that had sat for 15 years. Both had oil leaking over a good part of the engine. Long story short, both bikes crankcases were loaded with gasoline. Drained the oil, replaced the fuel petcocks with OEM petcocks, yup, can be around $100, but don't waste your money on the online cheap replacements. Bettery yet, replace with a manual petcock that perhaps Pengal has an application. The reason the manufacturers came up with the vacuum activated petcock was to that the operator would not have to remember to put the petcock on "stop" when the vehicle was parked. If the carburetor on said bike has not so great sealing needle and seats, there is a possibility of gas passing into the crankcase or worse, into the cyclinder exposing the engine to hydrolock. Starter motor orings, shiftshaft seals, clutch rod seals, etc, are not designed to seal while submerged but handle splash. So, good diagnostic procedure for you. In addition, I have found working on others bike, don't assume maintenance and repair work has been done properly. The oil filter you removed and then replaced is in backwards. The relief valve of the filter should mate against the engine case and not the access cover. Thanks for posting your video!

Do those aftermarket pod air filters affect the performance? I can't decide if I think they look better than the stock ones or not, but I noticed that it's different from my Virago.

I am really not sure on that personally. I prefer stock bikes except maybe adding some apes or something like that- but as far as performance on these one, it came on it when I got it.

@@AngiesCycles Cool, thanks! My Virago is the first motorcycle I've ever owned, and only the third one I've ridden! I just took the basic motorcycle class last month and got my license endorsement, and my friend had a Virago 250 for sale, so I bought it. We had a hell of a time getting it to my house, though. The battery died and it ran out of gas, so my friend brought me some gas and kept jump starting it for me. It seems like it's working better now, but I have an appointment to get it tuned up in about a week.

They do because they allow more air into the engine, but to make it run correctly you'll need to adjust the carburettor. Plenty of videos on youtube to do it yourself

So did you ever find how the gas got into the oil? Might have been as well to check the spark plug gap while you had them out. That metallic ringing when reving the engine should be investigated too, might be tappet adjustment. Don't you licence plates for motorcycles in the US?
@AngiesCycles
@AngiesCycles 10 ай бұрын
What I figure is that this bike sat for awhile and the gas eventually made its way into the oil. Yes, we plate our bikes in the US😁

Diaphragm leak in the fuel pump can cause gas in the oil. They're cheap wouldn't hurt to replace it.

Cringe at its best. Oil level can not increase unless gas is leaking in from the carbs.
