How effective is aero on a drag car at 200mph? Does aero make that big of a difference? On this episode we go on a journey with Jay Meagher from Real Street Performance to do wind tunnel aero testing on their 2000HP Toyota Supra. The streetable Toyota Supra has been 6.77@210mph in the 1/4 mile, but based on Jay's analysis of the ECU logs from the pass it seems they might be able to find gains from tweaking the aero on the car, so he decided to get some hard facts using the wind tunnel to test what the car is doing at speeds over 150mph. Watch along to find out!

SS OFFSHORE most people would think the same way you did here but unfortunately it’s incorrect. If you watch the videos of this car (or review the shock position sensor for the rear during a pass) it actually lifts the back and down the track higher than its static resting position. It’s a characteristic of the 4 link rear suspension. It does not squat like an IRS car. The rear of the car was set to the ride hight it goes down the track at while it was in the wind tunnel to get accurate info. Thanks for watching. We will continue to bring more new stuff like this moving forward.

How's 229 mph with a Flathead roadster sound?

They need to set up a Dyno 8n the tunnel. I bet they can get a lot of more turbulence information with the rotating wheels. You can even help wheel design . A propeller spoke design will blow air out cooling the brake system as you're driving. The wheels will be a fan blowing out (or in) at all four corners might be a good design to look into. It could be a bad designed too because it might vacuum up rocks and dirt through your brake system at high speeds.

This study lacks the hot air dumped under the car and hot exhaust gases on top of it on one side. Hot air and gas have way lower density,and reduce pressure where they travel against. You will increase down force again with warm air traveling under the car,but also reduce down force with hot gases traveling on the roof top. You should dump hot gases under the car,and get a diffuser behind the car = less drag,more down force. Caps on the whells will help quite a lot too.

Looking at the video I don't think the sensors for forces would be able to work with something that small. Small scale wind tunnels do exist because the cost goes up exponentially with size, but I have never looked into whether any are publicly available. One that small you could probably DIY. Changing size but keeping the shape the same can be adjusted for mathematically like they were doing with wind speed in the video, so if the body you use is also made at a smaller size you could do that and make an even smaller wind tunnel.
@modelnutty6503
@modelnutty6503 4 жыл бұрын
SuperBobKing excellent idea, it'd need an air velocimeter to know how fast a fan is pushing/pulling, then 2 or 4 digital scales to see what down/up forces start happening. a couple 20" box fans with stronger motors is probably enough, 10-12ft long with some vanes to keep the flow straight.

What i meant by that was a completely stock supra. ie stock suspension, ride height, no changed aero or blocked vents and with the wing. I know the wingless is less drag but it would be cool to see both in a wind tunnel just to see the difference in numbers. in general yess the car looks to be an entirely stock body car. But there are factors like ride height and if they have added any sort of panels under the car to aid in aero at higher speeds. thats why im just saying it would be cool to see a 100% supra roll into a wind tunnel and see how the car is. maybe even for fun have it do a wind tunnel test compared to the MKV.
