I've been trying to figure out wtf that noise was on my van for 3 months. being an auto body technician for GM I'm unfamiliar with crysler/Mopar vehicles but I own one! the noise always seemed to be coming from the alternator to me but I've had "mechanics" tell me it's anything from a bad water pump pully to even lifters or ringers. thanks to this extremely informitive video I'm gonna buy the alternator and do this job on my half hour lunch break tmrw. thanks a lot brother!

I have the same problem with rattling coming from the belt area and three different mechanics all tell me its different things from water pump, to alt, to power steering and I can't afford to risk fixing the wrong part. Also I have nowhere to work on it right now. Its rattling mildly now and has been for about two weeks. You think it'll last another two weeks cuz I get paid by then and can afford more repairs if its more than just the alternator. Thanks for the help. Great video by the way.

Fly in my ointment lower alternator bolt on mine isn't a bolt it's a stud and alt won't come off without removing stud! Just something to be aware of.

Just done this repair with my lap top on the work bench, taking the instructions step by step. Almost done, waiting for parts store to call me that the serpentine belt came in. This video was super helpful. I followed your directions and it was a pretty easy job, bedsides getting the old mounting bolts off since there isn’t much room to work with. Other than that it was smooth and easy. The shop wanted almost $600 to fix. I paid $130 for the alternator and a few hours of work

Thank you - saved me a bunch of time and money. Only hard part was that the AC makes it hard to get the 3rd bolt out of the alternator, even from above - a ratcheting box wrench would have helped a lot! Did borrow a serpentine belt tool from the auto parts place since I couldn't get my 1/2" breaker in the space between the tensioner and the frame. Excellent video!

@hatfez10 жыл бұрын
No noise in mine, Batt. light came on. Checked voltage at battery with engine running, 12 volts only. It should be 13.8~14.3 volts. I also plugged in my OBC unit and it also showed low charge voltage. I did not remove the EGR tube, just the valve and at the top bolts. I also removed the unit without accessing from below, as I did not need to replace the belt. I removed the air filter box to gain access. Re-install the EGR valve before bolting up the alternator, as the bottom EGR bolt is blocked by the unit. Also, apply a anti seize product to all bolts that you re-install.Thanks for posting!

I guess they made things easier in 2010, We replaced an alternator on a 2010 w/ 3.8L engine and didn't even have to jack up the van or remove fender skirt etc. it was easily accessible from under the hood, Not sure why the stock Alternator died after only 90K miles but the new one fixed all the issues it was having (whining / grinding sound + battery light on dash coming on randomly).

Great video. Super helpful. I am 90% done with this repair. I would like to ask though, can you post the alternator & egr bolt torque specs on here please?
@justinrogers19887 жыл бұрын
By the way, if you don't have either a serpentine belt tool or a pry bar, you can also use an 8" (or bigger) adjustable wrench to grab ahold of that square piece on the right side of the belt tensioner, then push up on the end of the handle and the tensioner will rotate enough to pop the belt off and then back on again once you have finished swapping the alternator out.

Thanks for this video. I’ve the 3.3 liter V6 and was going to replace the alternator, which is still good, only because I’ve got 120,000 miles on it and I suspect it’s life is up. Is that a mistake or should I wait till the alternator “talks to me” ? Thanks, hope you respond.
@MotorCityMechanic6 жыл бұрын
Personally I would wait. No need to fix what isnt broke in this case. One thing..if it ever does fail, make sure to by a Mopar replacement. I have no faith in aftermarket parts, especially alternators. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
@rastacraw5 жыл бұрын
MotorCity Mechanic is it absolutely critical it needs to be a Mopar part? I bought a refurb from AutoZone.
@emblems4life7265 жыл бұрын
Robert Taylor I have had multiple issues with Alternators from Autozone, so I purchase mine from a independently owned alternator / starter repair shop which replace all diodes, bearings, and brushes on everything they sell. The quality is great, and the price is in the ballpark of the big parts stores, but far less than the dealership. Plus your supporting your local economy and a small business owner. Cheers 👍
@emblems4life7265 жыл бұрын
Robert Taylor one other point worth mentioning is that the factory alternator is rated at 160 amps (with a 180 Amp option available too). I saw one of the local big auto parts stores advertising an alternator for our vans which was only rated for 85 amps which is far too small.

Really appreciate the pointers and the detail, and thanks for taking the effort to post it. The only aside I'd mention is that I'd have loved to see at least some of the removal of the bolts, seeing is believing, and my experience is that getting bolts off is the hardest part. Accessing them with crap in the way is crazy (AC tubing, dip stick etc, who designed these things?) ! You breezed by "disconnect the electrical from the alternator", and that thing is real bitch on my van to disconnect. How is it released? I have left the bottom bolt on the EGR loosened but pulled the EGR out of the way. It seems you can never have enough tools though.

DON'T use a pribar on a stock tensioner. Yes, you can do that to remove the belt, but once the belt is off, the tensioner will retract so far into the recesses that you won't be able to use a pribar to put the belt back on.

great video. I have no experience with working on a vehicle but I was able to free the alternator. However, the bottom bolt on the egr valve will not budge. Any suggestions?
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
Its either going to be really tight or someone may have crossed thread it. I would say your what ever can give you more leverage such as a breaker bar or longer ratchet and try to get it freed......worse case scenario the bolt breaks off due to being cross threaded in place. Its been awhile since I removed one of these alternators so I cant say for sure if theres another route you can go to take the alternator out without taking the EGR valve off.
@samaustin92588 жыл бұрын
Since I was able to remove the top bolt from the erg valve, I was able to rotate the valve back about 1/2 inch, which was enough to get the alternator out of the engine cavity. Now I'm stuck again because the tension pulley will not rotate so I can't get the belt back on. Do you have any tricks for that?
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
Its odd that it rotated so that you could get the belt off but now it wont allow you to rotate it to reinstall the belt. Usually they do or dont work, not both.

I followed your steps to the T and was able to change it. The issue I'm having now, it won't turn over. battery is good, no engine lights. could I have accidentally unplugged something that would prevent it from starting. I don't even hear the starter turn.
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
The procedure is fairly straight forward....not sure what might have happened during the install. Double check everything and make sure nothing obvious as far as sensors or connectors. I assume you disconnected the battery during the install and didnt arc the alternator cable during the repair if the battery was left connected.

Can i put an alternator from an 05 caravan in my 05 town and country?
@MotorCityMechanic3 жыл бұрын
If the same engine then no issues that I can see. Basically they are the same vehicle

Good tips, nice editing. Could have used better lighting to see what you are pointing out.
@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
Your correct about the lighting, I do apologize. Currently I have been filming, editing, and uploading my videos using my iPhone. That would explain the noise and lighting quality issues. You have a mechanic learning filming lol. Im hoping to address each one of these issues as I progress. Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. Make sure to subscribe as well and thanks for viewing my video

I have never had to remove the egr valve when doing these alternators
@beardedtoolreviews71853 жыл бұрын
Really? Does it come out easy? I’m about to do this job soon and want to know the easiest way. Thanks
@teknowil9 жыл бұрын
#$^& that egr valve, if that connector was facing the other direction you wouldnt have to remove it, I had the alt already on, then I realized I couldn't bolt up the egr
@MisterN14 жыл бұрын
Let me tell you how much I have come to hate the egr valve.

if your working alone, getting the belt back on is a bitch.... Auto zone has rental/freebie tool for the job. Yu cant get a 1/2 inch bar on the belt idler, AZ has a thin one that works neat

haha my alt just went, can i do this job from the top only, I'm in Canada, a lot of snow on the ground,lol and i have no garage, your help would be greatly appreciated
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
+brent bauman Biggest issue with doing it only from the top is getting to the belt tensioner to release tension to take the belt off. Its possible but will be a bit tight to try. You may end up with a little snow on your back in the end haha. Try it and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching the video and make sure to subscribe

Thanks. I was able to accept a job today due to your excellent video. Mission accomplished. I sent you 5% of the gross profit via Google Wallet to MotorCity Mechanic --> button "Support." Access to the front bolt was a bear, due to aluminum tube coming from AC compressor. Would like to know how you did it. Red clips on the electrical snap connectors were a pain, too. Especially the clip on the alternator, because, from the top, you're working blind, as it faces down. Strange sounds, rough, upon running the new alternator. Ran to 3k rpm and held it for 30 sec. Did that twice. Sounds ironed themselves out after ten minutes of run time.

Is this about a 1 1/2 hour project? People should say about how long a project takes. They never do in any of the videos.
@MotorCityMechanic6 жыл бұрын
I would say more around 1 hour. Its a simpler job then other vehicles/engines. I never give times in the video because my opinion of time varies because I do this everyday so I know what to do and the shortcuts....the person that takes on a job like this never having done it before will always take longer then me or the next person. But 1.0 hrs is a good time frame. Thanks for asking David and make sure to subscribe
