The movie was not based on the novel, it was based on the screenplay written by both Kubrick and Clarke, which Clarke then turned into a novel while Kubrick made the film.

BINARYGOD Really, I thought that it was based on a short novella called: The Sentinal, that was later expanded into Sentinel for Eternity ?
@xBINARYGODx8 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey314159 Perhaps, but both of them working together on the script - which was apparently a nightmare for Clarke as Kubrick kept demanding rewrites and was generally not happy with how it was coming out (etc.). At some point, with the script technically not finished in either on their minds, they split and Clarke went off to write a novel based on the events of the script (changing or explaining anything however he wanted) and Kubrick left to do whatever he wanted based on that script.

8:40 ... the TMA-1 monolith on the moon didn't emit SOUND per se (it was in vacuum, after all), it emitted a powerful radio signal. The astronauts heard it because it was on a wide enough frequency band to be picked up by their helmet radioes. Significantly, the radio beam was aimed *at Saturn* in the novel, which was the real reason why Discovery One's flight plan was altered to go to Saturn instead of Jupiter.

As a fan of both the movie and the novel, I had always wondered why Kubrick changed the planet destination from Saturn to Jupiter, when Saturn was so instrumental a choice in the book. Now I find out that it was simply an inability to render Saturn's rings properly for the movie. But the significance of Saturn in the book was profound. In order to know where the signal coming from TMA1 was directed, the book used an anomaly of one of Saturn's moons. The moon Japetus is visually six times brighter on one side of its orbit than the other. Clark made the point that this was like a 'blinking beacon' to those who would eventually understand it, that this place was special.

The film is not an adaptation of a novel. Yes, the story incorporated ideas from Clarke's short story "The Sentinel" and "Encounter in the Dawn", but the novel and book were written concurrently. Clarke adjusted his novel based on footage that was filmed. Yes, there are differences between novel and film, but as Clarke says in his author's note to 2010, "[B]oth projects proceeded simultaneously, with feedback in each direction. Thus I often had the strange experience of revising the manuscript AFTER viewing rushes based upon an earlier version of the story."

This, 'Jurassic Park', 'Terminator 2', 'LOTR' trilogy (not 'The Hobbit' trilogy) and 'Evil Dead [2013]' are like Exhibit A on why SFX should be largely practical! CGI should be used sparingly, adding to SFX and cleaning them up instead of replacing them! BTW, I also never knew this was a collaborative effort!

1:43 No. Moonwatcher was not the only member of his group who could walk upright. I know the specific line that made you believe that's what you were being told... and you got the context wrong. Clarke was speaking in general terms of Moonwatcher's breed of man-ape (as a _very_ brief aside while he's carrying his father's body off to discard), not Moonwatcher himself. While he is the alpha male of his group, he doesn't have any special traits that make him physically distinct from the others.
