I appreciate you putting this video up because it led to me getting one of these old 400's this summer. Ended up liking it so much, we got a second one (454), which is even nicer. Both of course needed some work but each turned out pretty nice. That rear axle is quite smooth over bumps. Only handling complaint is the amount of body roll, but that's part of the tradeoff. Love how easily they pull start. Like the mechanical transmission and the high/low range. Not the most sporty, but a good workhorse.

I used to own 2 of these, '98 454's. My first new quads. Used them for years working on our recreational farm clearing timber, plowing etc. Love these machines. Rock solid and as tough as they get seriously. Miss the rocker shifter!! I still own Cats but newer ones now including a 2005 400 FIS and a 2009 Thundercat. Thanks for sharing this! Cheers.

Love my '98 400, just bought it off my buddy but I've been riding it with him foe a few years now. Didn't realize what I had till I posted it on reddit. Sold it to me for $500!

We have a 98 and a 99 Arctic Cat 500 basically the same thing I have towed full hay wagon with the 500 they are incredibly strong little bikes.

I also have what I was told was a 2001 400. But mines got an automatic shifter and also different looking headlight style where there different versions of this machine for that year size

No it’s always started with just the handlebar mounted choke.

Good deal! The 500 is pretty much the same as this one just slightly bigger motor. They are good machines.

What is the difference between green and red? Any specs I find for that year and model list it as green, mines red.

As far as I know there is no difference other than color of course. I’ve definitely seen 01 red arctic cat 400 before.

The Reds I'm pretty sure we're made in Canada and the green was the states

Mine locked up yesterday :( took 17 years... I'm hoping one of the magnets in the flywheel came out a little to far and got stuck on the stator🤞🤞🤞 won't know till tmrw, just put 3 quarts of oil in her too💀

That’s not good! I have heard of the magnets coming loose on the flywheels on these cats though.

This one gets pretty warm if your wearing shorts but with pants you don’t notice it.

Mine did that too, oil pump went out cause the oil filter wasn't changed in like 17 years.

@@grandcrappy it was just setting for years, we never had any land or trails until we moved farther down south that's when we actually started using it by then it was already old as balls
