The design of this speaks to Mr Reg's observation a while ago that car design peaked in the late 90s/early 00s when safety hadn't caused bulbous lines, this looks so clean it's aged perfectly.
@quillmaurer65632 жыл бұрын
I think there are a lot of reasons a lot of car enthusiasts see this era as the peak of car design. As well as what you describe, they didn't feel over-stylized like a lot of cars these days. And they were the optimal level of sophistication - all the performance and actually useful gadgets we want, but none of the excess infotainment crap cars come with nowadays. They were cars that felt like they were truly meant to be driven, focus on the actual experience of driving it, in a way newer cars don't - new cars feel more like giant cell phones with wheels. By the late 90s/early 2000s cars had achieved everything drivers wanted them to, there wasn't really much more progress to be made that would actually appeal to people. Struggling to compete with each other and continue to provide something "new", just trying to stay relevant, automakers have since gone to adding all sorts of nonsense to their cars and gone way overboard on the styling.
@markmiller32792 жыл бұрын
This was an especially handsome car even for its day. There was less exaggeration in exterior styling then, which was tasteful, but made cars look rather alike. Interiors were mostly pretty bad, with terrible materials that aged poorly, but Audi was among the very best, and that shows here.

Added electronic fuel injection, but something I can easily tune and troubleshoot. Added a turbo, to make it a little bit less slow. Heated but not power-actuated seats (that's heavy, complicated, more likely to break, and annoyingly slow). Still manual windows and very basic vents and heat. No power-actuated anything, because who needs it. Fairly good sound system from a simple head unit - I've thought of putting in one of those Android Auto ones with a fold-out screen, mostly to connect to the ECU, but I wouldn't bother with much other than music and MSDroid.

I have a fully specced 2000 A4 1.8T B5 sedan as my daily driver. With cream leather sports seats and Bose. One previous owner. I've owned it for ten years, because I just can't think of a reason to sell it. The most reliable car I've ever had, even at 145K+ miles. With a bit of TLC, these cars will last ages. If you like the looks and overall build quality of the B5 but don't want to pay for the money pit kind of upkeep that the S4 demands, then the 1.8T is a more than reasonable alternative that still feels far from underpowered.It's an absolute bread and butter engine, built across several VW-owned brands in the millions, which was well past its teething problems by about MY 1998/99. A good fix for the mediocre Bose sound is to swap out the rear deck speakers for more substantial 6.5'' drivers. The previous owner of my car installed Pioneer fiberglass-cone drivers, and it really improves the sound greatly.

I owned 5 different S4's over the years, starting with a 2000 and ending with a 2008. I loved every one of them, and never had any real problems with any of them. I'll admit, however, that I never kept any of them long enough for the factory warranty to expire so I can't comment about them over the long haul. But for the couple of years that I kept each of them, they were great. I was already an Audi fan, as I'd owned a 4000 CSQ, a couple of A4's and a couple of Couple Quattros before the S4 made it to the US. I've also had an RS4 and RS7 after the S4's. Why an S4? I live in Southern California, but was a weekend ski instructor in the local mountains (Big Bear) or Mammoth (in the Sierras) for all of those years. That meant up to 600 miles in a weekend, which is why I turned them over so often. With snow tires on all 4 corners, the cars were unstoppable. I didn't want or need a bigger car, although 3 of the 5 were Avants. Notwithstanding the narrator's remarks, they were great cars on mountain roads and very few cars ever passed me. Particularly in the early 2000's, pretty much the only cars you could get with awd were Audis and Subarus. (I can't stand trucks or SUV's. They always feel like they're going to tip over.) If you wanted some degree of luxury and performance, with winter driving ability - the Audi S cars were the only show in town. I still get nostalgic every time I see one, which occurs more and more infrequently. Since then, although I still drive an awd drive car with power, I've upgraded a bit - to a Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo. It's conceptually similar to my last S4 Avant - just bigger (quite a bit) and faster (HUGELY!) Not to mention the price...
@johnbutler74962 жыл бұрын
This was the first and last and nicest car I bought new. When I was 26, I had a good job with a good salary and a prosperous year of dot-com investment returns. I spent some of those returns on an S4 sedan, Cactus Green (a weird name for emerald) with silver leather interior. I wanted a WRX wagon, but at the time they weren’t sold in the States yet. I test drove a TT, then noticed S4s on the lot, and my attention turned to them instead after a test drive. I put ten years and 144,000 miles on that S4. The Jim Ellis chain of dealerships in Atlanta did Audi no favors with their oh-by-the-way maintenance surprises. WTF is a “secondary cooling pump?” I don’t know, but it cost $700 to replace. VW can make decent parts out of metal, but hand them electronics or plastic and kiss your money goodbye. A timing belt switch cost $1,700 at the time. I burned through three clutches, $1,300-$2,000 apiece, giving too much throttle in too high a gear uphill, all my fault, 20something hodad that I was. I bought a new set of tires every year thanks to my road trip habit. Had I not read the Audiworld forums at the time, I’d probably have burned thousands more with dumb ECU mods. For a few years, these A4s and subsequent generations were all over the roads in Atlanta, but they’re nowhere to be seen today. You’re more likely to see an old W111 than anything from this generation of Audi. By the time clutch #2 died, I was so sick of owning this car that I sold it way below its value and bought a used 2004 stick-shift Ford Ranger 4cyl instead. The paint was green, the engine was longitudinal, the pedals were three, but it was not quick. Three out of four criteria will do if I’m not paying for Audi manintenance. I still own that Ranger today, 207,000 miles and counting after buying it with 83,000. If I can make it 20,000 more miles, I’ll break my ownership record with that Audi bought new. I am so conflicted about this car. My hatred of red paint does not diminish my love for the car. It was one of the last vaguely German-looking German cars, before every sedan started looking like a damn Camry. Everything you say in the video is accurate. In fact it felt slightly charitable at times. I am buying a mug to get into your raffle, and I will tell myself that it’s appreciation for what you do if I lose (I love you guys’s whole schtick) otherwise Cosmic Forces want me to own this car again if I win, whether to reward me or to punish me. That shifter.

Absolutely right about this being one of the last cars that actually looked "German." I'd say the same about the E46 3 series too, but these late 90's early 2000's Audis aged perfectly design-wise.

In Europe A4 B5 is most reliable and tank car from 90s, and tons of these cars are top choice as old cheap relable, undestroyable car for central-east Europe almost in every country. In west this car is also very popular as old reliable car, so why for you Americans this car is not reliable? These cars making milion km with barely service which is extremal cheap. 2.7 biturbo is again told as one of best and most bulletproof engine of its time. Timing belt set for this engine cost now ~150 euro.
@johnbutler74962 жыл бұрын
Euro parts prices have always been inflated in the US, and correctly qualified Euro repair labor hours are as well. A shop servicing VWs and Audis has to pay for marque-specific diagnostic tools. Especially in the crammed longitudinal engine bays found in A4s, A5s and older Passats, having to drop the front sub-frame just to access the timing belt adds more labor and drives up the replacement cost. As I wrote above, the local dealership shop did Audi’s reputation no favors. I can only imagine what it costs to repair a Cadillac or Lincoln in Europe.

I own a nice modified stage 3 b5 s4 and though there are many things right in the video there’s a couple mistakes that I’ve noticed throughout the video. One I noticed is the gearing. To me it feels short. You are over 3k rpm cruising at 80mph so it makes cruising at even higher speeds unbearable with an exhaust. I’m also skipping 5th gear in city driving just because the gears are so close to each other. Another thing is engine displacement. It’s 2671cc which rounds up to 2.7 which is what everybody calls it in the Audi world. As for the complexion and reliability, they can definitely be reliable. Mine has over 190k and still pulls off 190psi compression though it’s been tortured throughout it’s life. Currently running around 500whp with all necessary supporting mods. They are a pain to work on especially if it’s your first, but it’s worth it. Parts are relatively cheap on sites like FCP euro which has lifetime warranty on all there products and all you really need is to stay on top of maintenance.

My friend in southwest OK like my NSX so much he bought a 92 that had bounced off a tree and gone into a flooded creek. The engine was fine but since the car had to be stripped down to repair, he just sett the drive train aside. He started the project in 2003 and gave it from 10 - 20 hours a week. This happened when all kinds of NSX aftermarket body kits were available. He put the bare monocoque on four steel 3" diameter 3. tall posts screwed to his shop's slab. The chassis was cut at the rear bulkhead and aluminum sheet was hand figured to add 6" in length. Thankfully Marc's expertise in fiberglass boat building and air frame maintenance for the Air Force allowed him to complete a unique frame and wide body NSX reminiscent of old 917 Porsche. The car was immensely radical looking. Marc was 55 in 2006 when he started working on a drive train. He built a 383 Chevy small block and held off on a transmission until 2012 when bought sequential trans-axle. After a year of custom fabricating he sold the 383 and bought an aluminum big block Chevy engine from a barn find Lola race car. I have only ridden in the completed car once - in fall of 2019. The car is fast. It has big wheels and brakes which fill out the fender wells. Once it is up to 80 or 90 he can control wheel spin and the car buries the 180 mph speedometer. The problem is that the windows begin popping out at that speed. After than Marc said he'd be working on better roof mounted clips to hold the windows tightly to the body. The car sounded like - well - just like a 1968 Can AM car. Marc passed (Covid 19) in may 2020 after he finished everything. His wife called since we were best friends and asked if I wanted the car. I am not wealthy, but had to choose between completing a mild restomod on my 94 NSX or selling it and paying her the $75,000 he told her the car was worth. It is now January 2022 and I call her every few months for morale support. The car is still parked in his shop. Shelly is 63 and the kids have no interest, so I am still considering it. Marc had told me the car felt like an altered competition coupe he drove in the early 1980s for his employer - not exactly what a guy my age needs for relaxing weekend drives. I can't help but believe it doesn't handle as well as the factory car.

@@quillmaurer6563 Bose sucks ass at home and in headphones as well. Their home stuff sells because it is small, not because it’s good. And even if you want small, companies like Monitor Audio with their Radius line have options that are much cheaper and far better than Bose, and only marginally bigger. In the headphone realm, the only thing Bose is good at is noise canceling. They do seem to be at the forefront of that… otherwise they’re overpriced, muddy, bass-heavy junk. Generally there are almost always better options for audio, but their marketing team has done such a wonderful job of making them the best in the eyes of the public that they’ll probably stay there.

As someone how had this car for 10 years including colour and gave it up a few years ago. I envy and console you when you win this. I loved this car more than anything.

Audi: sounds great until you receive your first repair bill.

Yes I knew many people who bought these , may they Rest In Peace . The repair bills killed the owners

All "special" models of cars are expensive when they fail. I drive a normal Audi A4 B5 and the parts are dirt cheap.

I remember the stock Bose system sounding great in my B5 A4 with just 2 12” subs and an amp in the trunk.

The B5 S4 is my favorite modern classic. I might even prefer to the E46 M3 😮💨

I loved my 1999.5 A4. It was the first "nice" car I owned. I daily drove that thing for years and I had very few mechanical issues with it. Quattro, V6, 5 speed- the tiny gas tank was the only thing that irked me. I couldn't make it a full week of commuting without filling up again. Ah, the good old days. Mine did not have a LCD screen in the center of the gauge cluster, just idiot lights.

Owned and sold several B5 S4s through the years and currently have one in the stable. Great cars not for faint of heart with incredible potential. That said, when properly maintained they are a dream. Never hesitated to grab the keys and drive them wherever and for any distance. I will say my biggest regret was letting go of my '94 urs4. That thing was sweet and still get updates from it's current owner. Oh, there is a hidden equalizer setting for the bose system that makes it pretty ok. Much better than the stock settings.

Say what you will about bose car speakers, but my QC25s are one of the best audio products I have ever bought from a utility and longevity standpoint.

It can be so infuriating as a brand. My first experience was with my 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 and I agree with Mr. Regular and/or The Roman (whoever wrote the script plus the comment they reference) and many others in that this era of Bose car audio was arguably a mid range option, sold as a high end. My QC35 are still solid, it has it's own audio profile but they're not terrible and the noise cancellation is damn good, plus everyone makes earcups for them so when you wear those out you have a huge choice of materials/plushness for the replacements(I can't say the same of some Shure BT headphones I bought to replace these). I only hear great things about their aviation headsets.

My first ever car was a 2001 A4 Quattro and I absoltely loved it. That was 6 years ago now and ever since then I've wanted a B5 S4 but they're just so horribly unreliable and everyone has modded them to 400hp 😔

They are not unreliable

I love my 2002 A6 2.7T. Same motor, bigger car, automatic trans. Thanks to a computer tune, it is about as fast as the S4 manual. I have 152,000 miles on original drivetrain/turbos. It is expensive to maintain but otherwise reliable.
