It's always entertaining to see the younger generations talk about the S4 as they often think the B5 S4 was the first S4 or the only S4 that had tons of tuning options. In reality, the 20V turbo 5 had and still has tons of tuning potential. The C4 S4 had tons of tuning options before the B5 was even released.... just as the 5000 turbo quattros and UrQuattros did before the C4 S4. You also mentioned that the C4 S4 was an E30 M3 competitor which is not the case. When it was released, the C4 S4 was aligned against the BMW M5 and Mercedes 500 E in terms of size and luxury sedan performance. Naturally, the S4 was less powerful but it was also much less expensive. They sold out quickly at dealerships and even in 1995 you'd often have to have your name on a waiting list and put down an immediate deposit if a C4 S4 came in on trade... we missed at least 4 or 5 cars that sold in the same day before we finally found one to put a deposit on in July of 1995. I'd also go as far to say that the C4 S4 (when properly treated and maintained) is easily one of the most reliable Audis ever built. We have owned 5 of them now and three of them for more than 15 years. Only 3 flat bed incidents for all those cars since 1995. (Failed fuel pump, failed clutch slave and broken coolant fitting). As far as performance potential is concerned, one needs only to search for "Jeff Gerner UrS4 speed record" to get a rough idea. The timing chain issues on the B6 cars are a lot like the IMS bearing issues on the 996 Porsches. It doesn't seem to happen to every car as the internet would like you to believe but it is also there lurking in the back of your mind. "I wonder if the pin is still in the grenade or if today might be the day..." They are a hit with the Vegas types I suppose. ;-)
@20vtechnik Жыл бұрын
And......yep. Agree 100%. The C4 is quite possibly the greatest all-round option here. They are tanks and easy to work on when needed. I had some experience with them (and lots of experience with the 200 20v). Reliability and the option (if budget allows) to build an awesome 1000+ hp sleeper is huge. Plus, the C4 is built so well and looks good (yeah it's subjective) too. And....there's the 5 cylinder. A selling point on its own.

1. There is no such thing as a b4 s4, it's a c4 platform s4. 2. Europe got the 4.2L v8 Audi c4 s4 but that didn't make the car cooler.. The 2.2t 20v is the most desired and most expensive variant with prices up to 10k (euros) 3. The B5 isn't the numero uno when it comes to S4's, in Europe the c4 s4 is veeery popular because the 20v 5 cylinder is a much much better platform to work on (also it's bullet proof). But it's changing because the 20v 5 cylinder is becoming more rare and therefore more expensive, not the same case with the B5 frankly (except rs4).

The supercharger SCREAMS and roars. people turn their head from a block away, no joke. so glad i did the ECS carbon fiber intake - expensive but beautiful. I bought a 1 owner b5 S4 a few weeks ago and loving it so far. However the maintenance that was needed (17 year old car) has been costly. But the one I found is a 9.5/10 condition so I couldn’t pass it up

B5 owner here. It’s a beautiful machine, but seriously... be willing to drop cash on maintenance. More than that, make sure you get it looked at. Head cover gaskets are a common issue on these things. Look for signs of a water pump needing to be replaced, etc. all that said, if you have cash, go for it! They’re marvelous!

I once worked on an Audi A4 B5 V6 back in 2010. The car leaked oil out of every single gasket and seal, and all that oil destroyed ever rubber bushing under the hood of that car. 6:40 Car companies became fans of the dual clutch transmission. They eliminated much of the horsepower loss of conventional automatics and shifted gears faster than a really good manual. When manufacturers wanted to show good 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times, they often used the DCT version. I will buy an Evo X MR someday. I keep thinking about when a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo video will arrive, even though my interest in the 300ZXTT declined once rally cars were sold in the USA.

My ride: 2001 B5 S4, K04, large intercoolers with carbon fiber ducts, stage 3 GIAC custom tune, 6 speed with FX400 clutch masters unit. JHM shifter, Stasis Street Sport coil overs. Alcon brakes up front. Great grocery getter. 3rd gear is silly quick.

C5 is underrated.. only weighs 400 pounds more and it's very aero dynamic.. Audi was going after the the 5 series BMW so they put alot into the c5.. I own a stage 2 c5 I love the car so much.....

@@FitmentIndustries Absolutley nothing mod wise. Just a cat back exhaust. I've stayed on top of transmission services and put good oil in it. Im religious about suspension upkeep. Outside of that, its been a great car. Im sure different people have different experiences though.

Have a B5 A4 Avant with the 2.8 v6. If you don't do anything stupid and do the maintenance on them, they will last forever, and still has a good exhaust note since it's the same V6 as the S4 without turbos. Mine it currently at 246k miles on the original drivetrain.

Not sure where you got your info or research from but you DO NOT have to remove the front end to change a bulb on the b6 s4??? You simply remove 2 screws and loosen two others. You can actually do this in about 60 seconds with a cordless drill. The timing chain is not the issue. It was a design flaw by putting the chain near the firewall for sure but it is the timing chain guides not the chain that is the inherent problem. They improved the parts for this and once those guides have been serviced the b6 is a tank. You MUST KEEP THE OIL CHANGED to avoid unnecessary issues with the timing chains. I have never heard of the b6 engines "blowing up"?? Where did you get that info?The car is beautiful and fast. My 3rd party warranty covers the engine for the life of the car. It paid 4100.00 to replace timing change guides. I absolutely love my b6 s4.

For anyone curious, I own an e46 m3 and a b8.5 s4. They are both great but should not be compared. The e46 is quicker and more fun to drive, but I can only drive it 4-5 months of the year where the b8.5 blows the interior game out of the water and is fun to drive all year. As far as performance, its like apples and oranges. Still BMW gang tho
@markc99495 жыл бұрын
Owned a B7 myself. Didn't even make it to the timing chain blowing up. 88k, numerous electrical gremlins, coil packs blowing numerous times a year, etc. I'm glad I owned it, it was fun, but something about saying a prayer every time you turn the key not to throw a CEL was a bit stressful.

Works out at just £944 a month. *help me*

Also the 100 is the predecessor to the A6. My dad had one of the first A6s in my country and they did look quite alike. One of the things that made them 100s was the headrests that had a whole in them. If it was a solid headrest then chances are it was a A6. P.s. but i love autos :(

Was not expecting this video, but pleasantly surprised. Love my B6 S4. Black on platinum leather, straight piped from the cats back. Sounds beautiful while rowing through gears. But what is said is very true and hilarious! Just got done taking the front off for the alternator drive belt replacement! Absolutely no room to work on anything without it in service position, and if you don't have your timing guides and chain updated, you might not be able to to sleep at night!

I got a low mileage B8 (2010) S4, and have hit every bump in the road it seems. About $13k in repairs over 3 years and 30k miles of normal daily driving. DSG blew up (gen 1 lol), wheel bearing, control arms, waterpump/thermo, driver cat blown, belts, and more to go on my next visit. On top of the normal brakes/tires, oil changes, dsg service, etc. I may have just been unlucky, but please get a warranty with this car.
