This video saved me a lot of money. My mechanic couldn’t figure it out and told me he would have to take the motor apart to check the timing chains. Was just a bad sensor

Well done Joel… my 2000 Durango has the same engine - I have an appointment with a reputable mechanic for crankcase position sensor replacement. Not being mechanically inclined, it’s helpful to understand his diagnosis and what’s involved in the repair - Thank God for KZbin … and guys like you! - Thanks for the upload 👌

Look for camshaft position sensor replacement and you can find a ton of such videos on KZbin. It is actually located in the same area as a Dodge Ram 1500.

Joel I've been driving my 01 Dakota back and forth to work with the same problem. It's only 5 miles each way but would still go into what you called "Limp Mode" every now n then. I finally stopped at AutoZone for the free diagnostic, they told me it was the crank postion sensor and I bought the part. After watching your video it took me and a buddy about 20 minutes to remove old and install new. Thank you for the help brother! Btw a mechanic friend advised to only use Chrysler brand sensors from the dealer. This was after I had purchased the Autozone part. If this goes bad again I'll get the Chrysler brand name part but so far so good.

Dude, always use jack stands. Hydrolic jacks can fail
@a1930ford
@a1930ford 5 жыл бұрын
Potential Darwin award contestant winner with that sort of jack and no jack stands for safety. It is called a camshaft position sensor in many manuals and not a crankshaft position sensor. Be cautious in using the aftermarket replacements, as many fail right out of the box and within a year of installing them. OWM MoPar is the way to go, but more expensive. Use the last 8 numbers of your VIN and you can match the correct cam position sensor at your local Dodge parts department. You do not have to jack up your truck at all to make this swap. Just lay on the floor and wiggle beneath the truck and frame. A 3/8" ratchet with an 8" extension and 10 mm socket will work just fine to remove this item. Pull it down with the wires connected and it can then be removed easier from the plastic housing. There is a rubber gasket or seal on the sensor, so adding a small smear of Dielectric grease on it, as well as inside the electrical wire housing it connects to will make future removal a bit easier, as well as protect the part from any water. You really need to provide more lighting when shooting a video of such action beneath the truck. Otherwise you miss showing a lot and it makes it difficult for others to view just what you are speaking of. There are lots of other videos about this on KZbin. I am at the 275 weight range and I could easily crawl beneath my truck without having to jack it up in order to replace this cam position sensor. In fact, I just did it yesterday. Thanks for sharing.

By the way, I too fell into the same Darwin Award category in the past when i had that same type of jack being used without any jack stands as I tried to remove a tranny filter on an old Plymouth Colt Vista in the early 80's. The car fell down when the jack turned sideways on me. No one in the garage at the time, besides myself and no time to hop out of my position before the car fell down. It came to rest right about a half inch above my chest and scared the holy beJesus out of me at the time. Lucky I did not have any tires removed. I too had the emergency brake on at the time, but that did not help in the least. Say what you wish about "nit pickers" and safety, but I speak from the voice of direct experience and can tell you factually that I am alive only by the grace of God after that accident of my own making. Live and learn, but most importantly, live. :-)

My son's 2003 Dakota is having the same issues. The local garage suspects it's the crankcase position sensor. I guess it's a common issue with Mopars so the sensor will be changed. BTW, where's your floor jack? I wouldn't trust just a jack stand.

Nitpicker would've said you should have that front end on jack stands and not up in the air on a rolling jack. Sounds just like my dad. Anyway. My truck was having this exact same issue. Evap code and all. I needed to replace the manifold gasket so I pulled off the exhaust and intake. Put everything back together and it won't start. I tested continuity on everything and volts. Everything is good. Just gotta get to the store to buy one because it won't start. I think I need a new cam sensor as well. But I don't know

did you have to do the crankshaft sensor relearn. my 2004 dakota 4x4 with the 4.7 just like yours hits the rev limiter at 2500 same deal you described.anyway changed the sensor and now it still don't run right and the code reader says crankshaft sensor not learned. you got any idea what the relearn procedure is on these trucks?
@lochinverx
@lochinverx 8 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, I did not have any relearning done. It started and ran right after I changed the sensor. This is only a guess, but you may have a wiring problem leading up to the sensor it self. If changing the sensor didn't work for me, I remember thinking to myself that I would check the wiring after that. The wires were looking frayed, there was tension on them and being that I had problems removing the old sensor in the old place (with all the pulling and the tugging) that I may have hurt the wire harness connection. Good luck.
@mattgavel6572
@mattgavel6572 8 жыл бұрын
finally tracked the problem down. the brand new shiney sensor from car quest was no good. i changed coils,plugs,cam sensor and even parts of the wiring harness that looked suspicous. i finally broke down a bought another sensor. woohoo problem gone. oh well at least now i know. don't always trust the first sensor apparently they are cheap for a reason.

@@teresagarland605 You really do need to jack the truck up or remove any tires in order to make this swap. I am at 275 lbs and just did this yesterday. Put down a carpet or tarp and then crawl beneath the truck (creeper will put you too high to do this easily). Better yet, take to a garage with a lift and make it easy on yourself. Use a 3/8" ratchet with a 6-8" extension and a 10 mm socket to remove the camshaft position sensor. Remove it with it still attached to the wiring harness or plastic wiring harness cap. That makes it much easier to remove the sensor from the wiring. Use some good lighting to see everything and this takes maybe 15 minutes to swap out as it is an easy procedure. Put in a smidge of dielectric grease on that rubber seal in the position sensor and the contact housing to make any replacement in the future easier and to keep moisture out when you reinsert the part.

The part should fit the problem is these things rust around the ring. I'm shocked you actually got that out without breaking half of it off inside the motor and it's a pain in the ass to get it out and clean the rust off. I got a Dremel wire brush floating around in the oil pan somewhere. I've changed my twice and about to do it again. Mine keeps leaking oil inside the sensor

bad engineering there previous years was in back of motor just below distributar...on those it required a gap which you would do by putting tape over end which on start would shear off...most tape are avearage of .010...to ...015 thick this would present gap...dont know if this would apply to these newer models

That's really strange. I have a coolant leak and now my truck won't start. It turns over but refuses to run. I checked for codes and a P1319 code came up but no check engine light on. The code says it's for this part, the sensor. If this is the only thing wrong with it I'm kicking my truck 100 times. 🤣
