This is one of the greatest cars of all time. Rock-steady reliable, such a beautifully kinetic mix of so many elements. Modern interior, and as reviewer stated, the body style has aged very well. Everyone maligns the "fanboy honda lights" but it still looks cooler than 90% of the cars in its class, even the second generation IS. The interior was very modern and sleek for it's time. You don't buy this car if you want an ES or an LS or BMW with wooded interior and tan leather. Why is there such a pervasive attitude of disdain for Lexus in every review I've seen? Is it because they are reliable? Is it because the reviewer's dad drives a toyota? Is it because it's not "european"? Yeah, I want to spend $2500 at the mechanic every 6 months of some stupid bmw or audi or worse, mercedes.
@kdu8004

Because they are vanilla. The is300 is reliable because there is nothing to them.
@cmjcj2ktn
@cmjcj2ktn 10 жыл бұрын
Wrong, they are reliable because they have superlative engineering. Furthermore, I can name 3-4 cars that subsequently modeled their taillights and back end of vehicle after this design. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no matter what these bmw fan-boy reviewers say.
@kdu8004
@kdu8004 10 жыл бұрын
LOL. "Superlative engineering." First of all there is nothing special about the design. It is pure typical old school Japanese. In other words, safe and boring. Ricer style taillights and elements from Lexus of 1980's. Nothing is elegant or revolutionary about this design. And they are reliable because they use parts from the Toyota parts pin. The only good thing about this car is that fact that it is RWD and the motor which is still a fail since it is underpowered. There was nothing "superlative" in this car compared to what it was trying to compete with at that time. The G35 sedan and coupe made ten time the statement and was the only Japanese car to ever dethrone the 3 series. The IS300 was a pathetic a attempt like all Toyota products. They should go into the appliance business. They would be the best. When it comes to automotive engineering and innovations, Germans are revolutionary. Everybody else tries to compete. Has always been this way and it's still this way today. "ERR but it has the supra motor and can make a bagillion hp!! And Germans are always in da shop.!!"
@andrewpaes477
@andrewpaes477 10 жыл бұрын
kdu8004 oh really? Germans are revolutionary everyone tries to compete? Maybe in the 80s pal toyota is staying in the automotive industry. They are the number one auto maker in the planet.... Let that settle in. Okay and compete? The new audi a series cars such as the a7 i believe completely ripped off the tailight styling of the current gen IS. Get with the times you fucking coward. And those rice taillights from the 1st gen were imitated by after market companies which is what gave the tailights that kind of view to some. I personally love the euro taste however lets be realistic here you by a NEW euro car and in a short month the o2 sensors fail. Engine misfires. Fuel economy plummets. Lights go out due to the rat wiring of bosche electronics. And i see it all the time. Blah blah its a hit or miss blah blah. Go fuck yourself.

The more I look around the more I see so many sedans based on almost exclusively on this car alone. The 2000s Ford Focus and Ford Fusion were almost exact replica of this car, albeit with cheaper styling. The tail light design of this car have been spotted on numerous others. But yes, the reason Toyota and Lexus are the best and most popular cars in the world is because of their unparalleled consistency and reliability.

I own a 2001 IS 300 and all I can say is this has to be one of the most reliable automobiles on the road . The car now has 250 thousand miles. It's running so well that I expect it to go close to 400 thousand. Very nice driving vehicle that has never had a break down. The only problem that this car has experienced was a fuse that went bad in the ignition switch. Also my CD player jammed. It's never left me on the side of the road. Never! The car being driven in this video, engine is off, out of sync . The IS 300 stands out for it's dependability. Still a good looker as well for being almost 18 years old.

Check out the melty dash in the later models bc that’s when they tried the soft touch dash. The cramped interior is mostly due to it being built on the Supra platform which is more coupe than sedan sized. Handles great compared to those other two platforms it was being compared to tho. It’s size is perfect for a daily.

Compared to the other sedans of its time, the exterior has aged really well. The same year Mercedes, BMW, or Audi aren't as pleasant to look at imo. Interior wise, it's not great but doesn't look exceptionally dated. Look at any car in its class from 2001 and you'll find disgusting interior quality and plastics. Reliability is something to behold especially in a car that is relatively sporty.

It reminds me a lot of the first gen G35 because while it has a luxury badge, the interior is a lot cheaper than the higher end models because its meant to be more of a sports car. It looks like it was inspired by 90s Japanese tuners like the Supra, 300ZX, 3000GT, etc. because they're made for performance and I definitely saw that influence when I test drove an '06 G35 coupe.

I've owned my is300 since I was 16, im almost 20 now. This cars mod list has grown throughout the years. I started with a new radio, and now i'm putting in a turbocharged motor. In terms of this in pure stock car form its AMAZING, it is a car that you can get your high school kid and know that no matter what kind of neglect or abuse those horrible monsters of car owners they are, this car will get up the next morning start right up and keep on going. THE MOTOR WILL NOT DIE! I'm serious I have put these things through their paces, racing them 3 quarts low on oil and a radiator half way full with coolant. Yes they do burn a bit of oil, and almost every single one with over 100k on it is gonna need new plugs and valve cover. I love my car, after all of the abuse and torture I've put it through its time to take out its heart and put in a stronger one. P.S. STOCK IS300's are slow. NO MATTER WHAT N/A MODS you do. trust me Everything short of a stroker kit and cams has been done to my N/A motor.
@rchung29
@rchung29 11 жыл бұрын
Its good to hear that the motor won't die. I have pretty good condition 05 with 85k. I was thinking about putting in a turbo. So what do you think? Would it be still slow. All I want to do is increase the 0-60 to under 6 sec.

I had / have 3 of these. I had the exact same 01 (new) and that engine sound was super sweet. Then the lease was up I got the 05 in stick. Unfortunately, the manual lost that throtle kitten noise. Just all rev's is what i heard. But that 5sp was super fast even with no mods. Sounds ridiculous I know. Manual or stick the car was the same locally. You can do more with stick, like drift, or punch it on the highway from 80 to 120 in no time. Anyways after my second lease was up and I got honda pilot because we had our first child. My wife totaled her car and she took over the honda. What did I do? I got a certified 05 (auto) without even discusing it with her. Anyways, I know you wanted to see if there was a difference with a manual. I can say; not much. What you do need to test drive an IS300 with less miles. I assume the car in the video was not maintained properly or its in poor condition.

I own a Lexus and can vouch that there was, in fact, a gap in the lineup. Now I agree with you on reliability, luxury feel etc. Its exactly why my grandparents have owned Lexuses since 1992. When every other luxury manufacturer sells the most cars in the sport compact segment, there was no reason as to why Lexus didnt have a car in the class. I myself have an IS. I have it for Lexus' legendary refinement, quality, luxury, but also for its relative ability to hang with BMW. Its quite sporty.

Well quite frankly, the reason for the poorish build quality is because it was originally sold as a Toyota in foreign markets as the Toyota Alteza. And when Toyota brought it over to the states, they rebranded it as a Lexus. You also got to remember, during the time period, build quality wasn't really such a priority. I love these old IS300s, also due to the fact that it has the same engine as the Mark 4 Supra.

some of the comments im reading here amaze me. someone gives their honest take on a car and people are getting offended as if he's talking about them personally.....what the hell? people get so connected with things that anything other than a 100 Percent positive review they think it gives them the right to attack someone from their computer lol. to the IS 300's credit....it was a Good first attempt to make a sporty compact from a brand who at the time was only making ultra refined if somewhat boring cars and vehicles. the 3.0L inline 6 is a Great engine. the 5 Speed automatic has proven solid as well. this one sounds neglected. but it's not without flaws. the interior doesnt feel as rich as it should have. it may be an entry level luxury car but it was still a luxury sport car.

You mustn't have an is300 then. They were all RWD only and there's nowhere else for the driveshaft to be if not there.

I think the Altezza had this clear taillight style before it was adopted as an aftermarket taillight style for other cars. That's why they are still called "altezza taillights" in the aftermarket. The ricer Hondas are the copycats.

Very nice! The interior isn't very luxurious, bu this car doesn't try to be luxurious. It's true to what its purpose is and still looks pretty good! I'd gladly have one of these, preferably the SportCross. Thanks for the awesome review!

Now a days, that's a hot mobile!!!! I've wanted Lex and toy techs all asking, man when you,,,, selling.. .I got over 208K on it, and they still want!!!! It's still a beast with the torque off the line and shifts, what a ride!!! Got fresh off the boast from Japan in 2000/2001 the Lexus IS 300 to compete with BMW 300. Toy/Lex went all out and paid for service for 5 and then extended...I don't know...You take auto in so rarely now It's harder to remember. Tech us old folks developed is helping us now....Ha..Ha

I don't know if I agree with you there. Most luxury buyers that I know of trade their cars in before they even have to worry about any potential problems. My mother is looking to trade her Acura after 40k miles, for example. Although, I do have an IS because I know it will last me and not break down through college, but I'm not the average buyer.

Looking back at this video… yea you were criticizing everything. But I agreed. Even for a old luxury car, it lacked a lot compared to its competitors at that time.

fun car to drive, but like all Toyota product the archille heels is at suspension, after 100k miles thing can get pretty pricey for suspension component, I spend more than $3k in my IS300 with all new suspension. Meanwhile my TL will cost 1/4 of that price. Other than that its a fuel up and oil change as required and nothing else.
@interceptfist

+truonghthe I agree. I'm about to refresh my rear suspension, lower control arms, maybe rear knuckle, bushings? it's not cheap, and that's just the parts. not including install. i'm considering selling it or upgrading suspension, but today's cars suck, I hate the way they feel. This car is still nice, just wish it wasn't so expensive for parts, and wish the MPG didn't suck so much.

I am not impressed with this review. It's a very good car and what Sofyan needs to understand is that this car is a 2001 model. Why the f*** would you be reviewing this beauty in 2013. Come on you just make a big deal out of hard touch plastic and I do understand that this is a Lexus bu it's a 2001 model

Wow that motor is knocking more than the amount of kids at my door on Halloween night. And the guy talked down this car as if it's some crappy Geo Metro. Not sure what he's expecting from a 15 year old car, he should check out other luxury brands / models of the same year to see there isn't much difference.

That is true. The TL was redesigned in 04, so this IS300 competed with 2nd and 3rd Gen TL's as well as the 1st gen TSX's. TSX and TL also got refreshed in 06 but nothing really major. Hmmm. And to be fair, the 1st Gen TSX was a 2002 CL7 Chassis, later bumped to a CL9 in 06. The TSX platform is almost in the same ball park, missed by 2 years. Name/ Year/ Platform IS300 98-05 JCE10 TSX 02-08 CL7 / CL9 TL 00-03 UA4-UA5 | 04-08 UA6-UA7 Its hard to tell. --And that 2JZ was knocking bad!

You got it backwards. This car started the clear tail light trend. Honda tuner kids copied it. Quit being a tool crying about the hard touch dash. Are you planning to make out with it? Try being original. Look how well it's held up for it's age.

The IS200(in Europe only I think) and IS300(other regions) are built exactly the same, different block and throttle body(and obviously the IS300 has a bigger displacement) but my IS200 has over 40,000 more miles on it than that and mine sounds like it's new so I agree that it's been treated like crap to sound like that. The old Toyota engines are very good sturdy engines and in my opinion one of the nicest sounding on the planet too.

@9:37 That is no excuse, since BMW with similar horsepower gets 23 to 24mpg on average. :) MPG does not matter that much in countries like USA or Saudi Arabia but in the rest of the world, where people get shafted over gasoline, it matters a lot.

gosh this thing is kinda of loud but i would buy this as a commuter car it looks nice for its age i remember when these things first came out. it came out during the time when luxury car makes found out that not just old people had money but young people would would buy their cars long as they make them more sporty and at a cheaper price, good vid
