2001 Toyota RAV4 Oil Change-How To Change The Oil On 2nd Generation 2001 Toyota RAV4

This is a video on how to change your oil and filter on a 2001 Toyota RAV4.
A full synthetic oil change will cost at least $65.00 to have a shop do it and probably even more at some dealerships. I did the math and my cost to do this with a more expensive high-mileage oil and a premium oil filter removing 99% of contaminants was approximately $35.00. That is at least $30.00 in savings.

Drain Plug Gaskets:
I recommend not buying these online unless you trust the source. I purchased what was called OEM oil drain plug gaskets on Amazon and they disintegrated in 5,000 miles and my oil drain plug came loose with very little pressure placed on it even though I know I torqued it properly. Having to replace an engine because you are trying to save a few cents isn't worth the risk.
Oil Filter: There are cheaper ones than this model.

Do you have to replace the washer or is that just optional?

First of all, thank you for reaching out. My answer to your question is below. It is recommended that you change the crush washer because of the irregularities between the drain plug mating surface and the surface of the oil pan. When the washer "crushes" down when being tightened it "meshes" the two surfaces creating a seal that should keep the oil from leaking should the oil make it past the threads of your drain plug. . Having said that, some people continue to use the same aluminum crush washer over and over with no problems whatsoever. Before KZbin and the internet, I never changed them because I didn't know you were supposed to. (I have been doing oil changes since the early 80's. Not a whole lot of information out there back then.) I see on the internet that a lot of people re-use them with no problems. If I could give you my best advice it would be to change them with a good quality crush washer. The cost of replacing an engine, should the washer that you re-use fail, isn't worth the risk. Just my 2 cents.
