I've owned 3 Jettas, and YES, they have that crayon smell. One of the most reliable cars. I used 1 for a "beater", and the other 2 we for the kids.

I've heard that the crayon smell is due to a wax undercaoting that was used at that time in production. Over the years, the under coating continues to heat up, and the scent rises to the cabin.

My sister has this same drivetrain in her 02 Passat! It’s a great and peppy little engine But be warned You have to love the car It’s just like the rotary community You have to love the car to keep it running and keep it going

My dad owns a 2002 Jetta it has nearly 200,000 miles and still runs and drives great.

I love these cars. There's just something about the way they drive and handle that entranced me. Not sure what it is but I love them regardless, the only downside is fixing the damn thing when something breaks. They aren't the most reliable in the world and they're awfully complex for what they do. That being said, they're still pretty good cars. Maybe it's just first car love.

1.8Ts can be pretty fun when modified. Trying to get a MK4 GTI back on the road at the moment, they can be a good daily with some care and preventative maintenance. 👍

Nice review. This is the car I'm driving these days. It only has 348k miles on it. One thing I'm wondering. What are the buttons for on the turn signal lever? There's a button on the end and a switch on the front face. They don't appear to do anything when I mess with them.

The 1.8t wasn't the base engine. You could get smaller or less powerful engines depending on the market. In North America the 2.0 was the base engine.

I have driven this car in boring midnight blue for three years. The road noise is rough. The check engine light is on constantly for an “Evaporators” leak. The wheel speed/abs sensors go bad all the time. The wishbone engine mount breaks on a lot of them. But I hate the idea of selling it. The wheel base makes it easy to flip around in and the 5 speed manual is a fun daily. The cup holders suck!!! It has the crayon smell. Mine has heated seats not sure why this Wolfsburg does not.

Had a 2001 GLS was not a powerful car at all but it was fun to drive. I think the GLI came with the VR6 v6 engine.

The smell is the sealer melting off the interior plastics, happens to most Volkswagen models from like mid 90s to early 2010s I think.

Not a base model. The base model would not have the 1.8t. It would more likely have the 2.slow. good stuff otherwise

2.0s are cheap to fix, reliable and when they do go out you can literally get any year 2.0 and just put your intake and all your electrical on it and it’ll work, I think the heads are slightly different though but don’t quote me. But if you find one that works they are like 300 bucks

I have an '03 2.0 (non-turbo) and it has been LOYAL like a dog. It's an absolute blast to drive with 215 tires. Just routine maintenance (Watch your oil!) and I believe you'll have a nice car---provided the former owner(s) took care of it well.

I have a2002 Jetta 1.8L automatic. Bought it from co worker for 500$. Don't have reverse and don't care about now. Only going forward in life. Using it to get back and forth to my job w/Amazon. Beats taking the l.a. Metro bus right now!
