2001 VOLVO V70 ~ FLUSH & FILL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID ~ NEW COOLER & FILTER ~ FULL PROCESS

Brilliant method when having an external cooler. My S60 2.5T doesn't have that cooler. MY cooler is integrated with the radiator. This is how I do this service. I sourced an old cooling line and cut it off leaving 4" of hose attached to the factory steel plug in with the O ring to make a tool for this. I pull the top cooling line going into the radiator and plug the homemade tool into the top port of the Radiator. Note that the old fluid is expelled from the transmission into the lower port on the radiator thereby flushing the cooler as well during the service. I then add 4' of 5/8" clear pvc tubing onto the rubber end of the "tool". I put the end of the tubing into a 5 gal. cleaned out fryer oil jug marked at 1-2and 3 gal increments. Then I have a helper start the engine while I monitor the clear tubing. When I see a air bubble in the tubing I command shut off the engine. I look closely at the jug and can see 3 qts have been pumped. I add the 3 qts down the fill tube and then have the helper start the engine. I have 9 qts of fluid with the caps and seals removed for quickly adding fluid into the fill tube and monitoring the jug. Amazingly the fluid goes in at the same rate amount that is being pumped out. When the level in the jug reaches the 3 gal mark, I command engine shut down. That's it! 100% fluid flush with the transmission doing the work! This also avoids raising the car to drain the sump and no mess in the process. When checking the fluid level after it's fully heated up, I use a reach tool with the push button on one end and the 4 claws on the other end to grab a hold of the dipstick. No wire is necessary. Works perfect every time and not just on Volvo's.

Raining again 😳. Quite a procedure to change fluid. But came good and clean. Burnt fluid at the first bottle. That’s not good. With the extra cooler you would not think it would be burnt like that. Great to get it all out. Have a great day.

This car came to me like this. No idea when the last fluid change was!!! Glad to have it flushed and have a new cooler and filter this time. Great job, I like the new filter and cooler. Has it improved the operation of the tranmission? We have a garden tractor that uses an inline hydro filter which is no longer available, I wonder if the filter you used would work. We will have to look into it

It's too early to tell if the complete flush will improve or "Brick" the transmission. Sometimes, when you change old, worn and burnt fluid, the automatic transmission will begin to slip--other times not. It has been said that the old fluid contains wear particles that act as a friction source for worn clutch plates inside the transmission. Some would never change it all at once. Others have done complete flushes (like I did) with success. I guess I'll see what happens. The cooler was a big improvement compared to the old one that, while not leaking, was heavily corroded. The fluid filter should work on just about anything and it seems like good quality. Good luck.

How many litres do you think had to be sacrificed in order to get everything out of the torque? I'll guess at 6! Very thorough Craig👍

Well, the transmission holds just under 9 litres so about half of that amount gets sacrificed to get the whole thing flushed. I found this fluid for $9.50 per litre so, about $90 dollars worth of fluid gets pushed out into the bucket! But all is not lost. I mix transmission fluid with rust-proof to undercoat my vehicles so none will actually go to waste. Still, it's good that this flush only happens a few times in the life of a vehicle. I bought this car with the fluid as it was and it was overdue. Have a good one, Marc!

@@thatsonebadhatharry8610 Strange as it is, the amount of fluid required for the flush is just about double the amount the whole transmission holds. I was concerned about using so many litres of new fluid but that's Volvo's recommendation to get everything out of the torque converter. Yes, it was running quite clean about the sixth flush but I was on a roll LOL It was probably clean enough after 5 but each two litre removal only gets a percentage of the dirty fluid. There is just under 200,000 miles on this car (321,000 kms). Volvo called this car the V70XC AWD and within a couple of years they changed the name to XC70. The body style stayed the same and the two cars are almost identical (2.4L engine vs 2.5L in the XC70 etc and some minor changes).

@@EverydayProjects Was it necessary to do a transmission reset/relearn as it is on newer models. You have the 5speed auto if I remember correctly. Just not sure when Volvo started the reset procedure.

@@thatsonebadhatharry8610 I did not have to do a reset/relearn process. Only thing is there has been a SERVICE light on the dash for a month prior to this. Not a check engine light. I think I can just reset the service light and be good.
