If I was asked to pick only one game to sum up baseball to a foreigner, this would be it. Great pitching and defense along with clutch hitting. A brash new team taking on a dynasty at it's peak. Also, you have to remember that this was only a couple months after 9/11. Despite being the team everyone loved to hate, New York was the sentimental favorite to win because of the attack...the crews were watching the game while still clearing wreckage downtown. I lived in Phoenix and while my heart went out to New York, I had to root for my snakes. I think the fact that it was one of the best series of all time was enough of a tribute.

Mariano Rivera throwing the match away after tying the game ended up saving a life. Had the Yankees won, his teamate Enrique Wilson would have flown to the Dominican Republic after the team celebrated in their victory parade. Since they lost, he had to postpone his flight. In this century when we’ve seen so many seemingly impossible occurrences in sports (Cubs, Red Sox, Patriots champs, Cavs over a 73-win GS team, etc.) it’s hard to relate to people how impossible this ending was.
