I use a cup of gas and a 49 cent brush to soak and wash everything and then use the carb cleaner for blowing ports/jets. The stuff cost too much to fill up bowls for me. Also I always clean the float pin if the bowl has that much residue.

Great Video! I had my two xr400 2000 stored for almost 10 years with no use. They have barely been driven. They have 1000km on the odometer. Do you think the carb could of gotten dirty for sitting there with no use? For some reason the bike runs but gas comes out of one of those two little tubes that come out from the carb and go all the way to the bottom of the bike. Im guessing carb must be dirty so gas overflows and comes out of one of those tubes... Please help if you know why this happens!

Hey! So I took carb out and opened it out. It dosen't look that dirty inside but the '' the float" is sticky like you said. How exactly do I clean the float? BTW your video is super informative... It was a little complicated taking carb out and i'm guessing putting it back in place will be even worse but hopefully that would bring my bikes back to life. Hopefully you can help out with float problem. Thanks again!

How essential is the little cone that sits on the main jet?? Because I've just stripped my carb because the bike spluttered a little and there wasn't one on there. ??
@rothman2410 жыл бұрын
Interesting question...I really dont know. So it ran fine without the cone previously?
@d4rren10 жыл бұрын
It runs ok. It idles fine but it splutters when I'm travelling slow around 30mph and again it misses when I'm riding quite fast with a lot of throttle. This is why I'm cleaning carb and I noticed today there is no cone on top of main jet???? Great vid by the way, I'm totally new to this, first carb I've ever taken off and I've just followed step by step and put back together and bike started strait away.

+Darren Elson its the fuel baffle so it keeps your fuel on when you hit a bumpy area. also you can add a small tube on the idle jet to pick up gas as well -

For the record, I also changed the oil, oil filter, spark plug, threw on a new air filter, and lubed the chain/pivot points.

Are you aware that on this particular carb, There's a chance the backfire flap located on the choke flap can snap off. If the little spring which keeps it closed breaks? I've heard horror stories of it being sucked into the cylinder!! :-(
@xr400allday88 жыл бұрын
I have a just bought a 2001 XR400 for a muck around it was a C#@T to start ( 20 - 100 kicks ) , I pulled the carb out straight away to clean it when i did this i found out that it had a "BackFire choke plate" the we flap on this had gone ! Apparently known to be an issue with these . This being missing meant my choke was non existent . Long story short mate of mine made up a new one with no thumb size hole in it where the BF flap was supposed to be , re fitted the carb & 8 kicks later she started and idled. Next day & the past 6 weeks 3 kicks max from cold every time! My Start process , I lean the bike over to the throttle side to full up the carb with fuel it will start to drain out the hose ( leaning it over to the clutch side will do sweet F all ) Full choke no throttle & kick her on top of the stroke

You missed the most difficult part. How to remove the throttle cables from the carb
@jimmycrackcorn16674 жыл бұрын
I hope you were being sarcastic. That's literally a single Phillip's head screw and then working the cable head out of the channel.
