Cars Direct says Honda upgraded the second-generation CRV's engine power and redesigned its look in 2002, but kept much of the same features of the first generation. Honda's powertrain upgrades gave these CR-Vs a 2.4-liter inline-four 160 hp engine and option between a manual or automatic transmission.
Because Honda based its second-generation CR-Vs on the seventh-generation Civic platform, this era of CR-V saw marked improvements to the suspension and the chassis.
For the interior, Honda gave the second-generation lineup some new features:
- Reclining rear seating
- Front console center tray
- Front and rear side airbags
