Bought my 2000 Echo new... still own it. Have 120,000 + miles on it, but it's taken 18 years to wear out front end bushings and a rear shock. Almost time to replace motor mounts. This is what cars are supposed to be about. Point A to B decently. As little as you can spend on a car the better. Good score. A friend of mine had someone abandon a Mid 2000's pickup on his property and after two years he finally decided to try and acquire it. He was forced to do an auction and nobody came to bid on it so he managed to aquire for around $500 in back due fees and another $500 in tires. A new battery, plugs wires, etc and in total he's spent less than $1500 on it. It's a 4 wheel drive v6 so I consider that a good score. Only thing wrong was passenger side door had a good size ding in it, but he's got a replacement door from the wrecking yard, same color just needs to swap it out. That was only $25.

There’s not enough to be said about the maneuverability of these cars. You can usually work your way around any construction zone, or a small turning area. They’re not lookers, that’s for sure, but they will get you to work and the store and back. Also, they are great for small parking spaces, and you can park where a lot of big cars can’t. If you’re wondering about headspace, there’s plenty, more than you would think. And gas mileage can’t be beat. They’re not luxurious, and the ride can be a bit bumpy, but they were built to run and run, with minimal maintenance.

Last year I got a 2000 Echo 5-speed with 71,300 miles!! I paid half of what you paid for a car with half the mileage & I got the 5-speed manual. (I think the automatic is scary for its lack of initial acceleration whereas you can keep a manual in gear up to the redline, if you knew what redline was.) The people had just parked it & it had 400 miles on it in the last 10 years per the oil change sticker. It cost me $700 including tax title & license. I work at a job where I overheard them saying they were going to give the little car to some charity, so I butted in. I gave them $600 for the troubles. It had a chargeable battery which died soon thereafter. I got a new cheap 1 yr Walmart battery, new wipers, engine air filter & cabin air filter. I used Chevron Techron fuel injection cleaner the first chance I could with my first full tank of gas. It passed state vehicle inspection. I've only put 3,700 miles on it in the 1.5 years. I just did synthetic engine oil with an upgraded Fram oil filter, synthetic gearbox oil & I'm getting ready to replace the front pads with Ceramics & bleed It with synthetic brake fluid. I installed 2 new fan belts. & I will do 4 new spark plugs soon (& the coolant & radiator hoses in the spring as it tests ok now). I bought 4 used tires that are 185/65 cuz I couldn't find the right size. The hubcaps were all brittle & broke apart, so I bought replica ones for about $60 that I haven't mounted yet . The EPA on it is 41 / 34. I've never gotten less than 35mpg & it's almost all City mileage, but no traffic jams to speak of. I wonder what it MPG it will get on a long trip with all the synthetic lubricants now; I bet it will approach 45 mpg. This car actually has a slightly better repair record that the Camry! I have a 2000 & even though it's the first year, it is almost flawless. You say it's discontinued, but the Yaris is basically the same vehicle (with the same engine?). It's got a 1.5 Liter as does your Honda Fit. Prior to the Echo there was a 1.5 Liter in the Paseo & the first Scion XB cute little Boxy Thing that was so quirky also had a 1.5 Liter & got extraordinary mileage for a something that was almost small van size (you could get a 5 spd manual). Anyway if you look on autolist for Echos, most have at least 175,000 miles & a nice price, so they hold their value. I'm going to enjoy this car. It's not really my beater; I'm going to hold on to it for a long time & may not buy a second car. The clearcoat paint job is frazzled, a factory silver paint flaw (or from being parked 9 years in the Louisiana sun), so that's 1 less thing to worry about & it only has 2 small dents by the LF fender well. It's "ugly," but extraordinary! I wish it had cruise control & I think I would still like power mirrors & power windows, although I'm tall enough where I can reach over & crank the window without much difficulty, & it's too bad the little real windows are fixed. I wish they were pop out (or motorized). Unfortunately a long trip without cruise control might put your right leg to sleep. Enjoy!!

Also living not far from London which has low emissions zone (ulez) it's ulez compliant. I was also given an Echo for free from a family member mine had a bit of a rough past I got the car from my aunt who neglected it she told me everything was good to go on the car turns out that wasn’t true within 5 months of my ownership I had to invest in new spark plugs and coil plugs even the serpentine belt and I’m still not done with the car the car was given to me with 84,000 miles I now put almost 92,000 miles on it and I am going on three years of my ownership. I love the car but it hasn’t been well taken care of and I’ve been working on it constantly I even had to put a new mass airflow sensor on it because the old one was bad never replaced. I mean my echo hasn’t missed a beat since I’ve been investing in new parts and installing them but the car has been good to me overall. the Toyota Echo was replaced with the Yaris. Both cars are hard to kill. The neighbor kid down the street has a 2007 Toyota Yaris that is riced out. He beats the hell out of that car. It still runs strong after 4 years of daily abuse. He's done burnouts and manually shifting from L to 2nd to Drive banging it off the rev limit 😂 They are tough as nails, that's all i'm going to say.

I had a 2 door 03. I bought new. Had it for 10 years. I had a love hate relationship with it. Boring but very very reliable and cheap. I've gotten upper 40s in it. Crazy. You are correct, it's a very light car. Yes, lighter than the Fit. The second gen Fit has about 10hp more than the echo but of course heavier

Looks to be an adorable efficient to n from work car. I miss seeing those compact cars that're fuel efficient and easy to park. Sadly compact cars like this one are becoming difficult to find. You've got a car that'll last longer than most cars on the road today, so plan on keeping it for as long as you can. Great video of something we all enjoy seeing, well to those of us that enjoy driving compact cars

I have a Lexus currently but I want a beater for working UberEATS. I love echos because they are dirt simple, reliable and cheap. The only issue is the manual windows. So I'm thinking about one of this or a 2000 corolla. One thing echo is better than corolla is gas mileage. Hard pick huh?
@toyoscio5 жыл бұрын
Not really. Corollas of that vintage, many of them, have excessive oil usage, which was not remedied until 2003, 2004 to be on safe side.

@@toyoscio thank you so much. I'm so glad you saying that because echo is my favorite of those two. I used to watch top gear car show. They used to have a cheap Suzuki Liana (SX4 in US) for guests to test their speed. I love that car so much but having a used Suzuki in US is not a good idea, so I pick something like that but from Toyota. Echo is ugly(just my opinion.
