2003 Chevy Impala P0420 clogged catalytic converter.

This impala was running rough and had a P0420 code so I decided to pull the cat and found out the inside was falling apart which is pretty common so I went to AutoZone and got a new one for $218. I ended up pulling the entire exhaust system because the muffler flange bolts were very rusty so it made the job a little easier.

Nicely done thank you! Related note that might help others - if you remove the cat and weld in a pipe section like I did on my car, you will also get the 420 code. In short - no cat = 420 code.

Do you have both 02 sensors in place?? Just be curious I also do not have a cat and have straight pipe in place of the cat and muffler still connected

I did at that time when the cat was gutted. Both sensors in place. However, I should ad that since that time I've put a new cat in my car. It still has an occasional 420 code so I'm not sure what is going on with it. It runs like a champ so I'm now really worried about it. Possible it's a mis-match or O2 sensors but without diagnostics I don't think there's a way for me to figure that out.

Did run good on highway but stalled at stops if foot not on gas? Did it stall right after starting and then make a rattle sound if foot not on gas?

I got a 2007 Impala 5.3 V8 and the thing is slow to get up and moving. Shifts good just floor the accelerator and it takes forever to get up and going. No CEL but is this a clogged cat?

Seems to be a common issue on the 3800 impalas. Don't know why. Mine was plugged to and had to replace it

I know this video was three years ago, but there's no way a direct fit catcon was only $218 at AutoZone. Especially one that actually clears the P0420 code. Is this a joke? That part today is like $500 ($300 if you get it online at third party sites).

It's the state live in NY the carb law prevents from buying catalytic converters with inferior metals, so ordered into NC and grabbed it when parents came up, $100 direct fit pipe with cat was 450$ at the cheapest that would ship to NY, not like the car is gonna go another 20 years don't need top of the line catalytic converter and trust me will be better than the one on it now 😂😂😂

Lil R the car usually won’t run very well if it’s all clogged up. Did you get a CEL?
