True, without the boost correction with the cat this would've been an inconclusive/unfinished video. When they mimicked the boost it really showed how little a difference the cat delete really made. I wouldn't do it for a measly 5hp increase.
@georgejones50193 жыл бұрын
Karen. It's just 5hp. It would be worth it with a full exhaust change because the full power gain can be significant. The combo of better intake and cat-back exhaust will give largely noticeable performance gains because the engine with respirate better.

@2D well they did switch back and forth relatively easy. Its not impossible to see you deleting the cat on race day and slapping it back on afterwards. 5 has isn't much until you're pit against a car that has more or less the same hp as yours.

@2D exactly my point. Sometimes you have to come to a compromise. If you track your car daily. Keep your straight pipe on and don't daily drive it. I mean, yeah, but this was a terrible choice of car for this test. The exhaust restriction on such a small engine is really negligible. it matters for more for larger or more powerful engines, where a cat delete is definitely worth it for more power, and that’s not even talking about the safety of reducing egts and back pressure. The cats on new cars are very restrictive to meet tightening emissions regulations (and ridiculously expensive), at the oem I work for we are having trouble even meeting last year’s power and torque ratings on the same engines.

Yes that’s very much true. I’m a welding student, currently working on my highschool endorsement. And yeah, when you look at welding, it seems harder than it actually is. The terms, and machines you use is quite different than your average mechanic’s work shop. When you make a weld, it’s true that you really need to make sure the weld is strong. I’ve met plenty of welders that thought the welds had to look good too, and then took a grinder to said weld. They completely ruined a perfectly strong weld, because of a simple misunderstanding. The main thing to worry about is making it strong, but it’s ok can make it look good with a strong weld too. But it takes quite a bit more skill, than just grazing over learning welding basics.

Would be interesting to test a high flow cat vs stock vs test pipe. The very small gain is exactly what I expected for the level of build, even with the turbo the cat is barely restricting flow. Cats don't really start to become a restriction until you start trying to produce big power and you can usually size up the cat or run high flow cats if you're trying to make big power and stay legal.

@@howieewalt1322 you started having higher flow cats by the 90s, you'll get a gain but probably not as much as you would in the real smog days. A good candidate would be a Mustang II king Cobra which was 5.0 making 149 HP.

I did a 2012 sierra cat delete with headers and my mechanic drove it after my trans was replaced and was totally surprised between the difference of our trucks. He also had a 2012 with the same motor. I felt a little difference honestly. nothing significant tho.
@FTsingos2 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure. I may be mistaken, but I think it plays a bigger role in turbos. An Engine Masters episode tested exhaust flow in turbo and NA applications. IF I remember correctly, better flowing exhaust (post turbo or post headers in the NA's case) were more important in turbo cars. In my limited experience, the older catalytic converters did more to choke exhaust flow and power, but even then not as much as people expected. People greatly exaggerated the amount of horsepower catalytic converters lowered. The bulk of this belief was perpetuated by old school muscle cars fans who saw power drastically reduced with emissions. What never gets considered is that this also coincided with a move to measuring an engine's net horsepower vs its gross power. Net horsepower is usually 20% less or more. Then with the move away from leaded gasoline, compression ratios were usually lowered by around 2 points to account for lower octane fuel and prevent detonation. This part actually CAN be blamed on the catalytic converters as leaded gasoline can't be used in cars with cats and the phasing out of leaded gasoline was expedited. However, i believe toxic leaded gas would have been phased out even without the invention of catalytic converters. I've traveled in countries 30 years ago that still had many leaded gas cars on the road. It's an unpleasant smell in congested cities. As far as modern cats go, I've seen a few tests done on NA LS engines and the increase was usually around 3 horsepower. These engines were usually around the 400 rear wheel horsepower mark. I decided to go with high flow cats on my header setup because of the noise and smell that catless systems create. It's surprising how much "rasp" catalytic converters cut down and how awful exhaust smells without cats. The only two reasons I was hesitant to put catalytic converters was the 150 dollar price increase and the small possibility of cats aging and clogging in the future. Of course, at that point, I'm just going to hollow them out. The 5 horsepower I MAY have lost (most likely less) was not a factor at all for me.

‘Welding is a money pit’ Very true, but your welder does have a better HD display than my TV

I appreciate that you did an extra series of runs with the cat to account for the boost creep for a more direct comparison.

Never weld with exposed skin, UV light is no joke.

Important welding safety tips that were glossed over a bit: do not look at the welding arc without your helmet. Also gloves and long sleeves are important. And don't breathe the smoke. And wait for the part to cool down before handling it.

Seems like something a Generic Anime Boy would know a lot about.
@richrevs3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Also, if you can, try and cool off the hot work area by drenching it in water too. Another tip would be to make sure those around you, when you or someone around you is welding, is aware that an arc is going to be struck and an active weld is being made! So don’t look in that area, is you or they do not have the proper equipment handy

Yeah you really want to wear long sleeves because you get a really bad sun burn if you don't.

Comon sense would dictate one to know this. Comon sense? Ummmm......don't know what that is. Was it canceled by the cancel culture? No my son, it went extinct in last 5 years. Just before cancel culture went on crack.

Wow I really appreciate your talk throughs on the welding bit. I've found myself with a "weld bug" and have been actively working on learning the basics before ever actually getting a welding gun in my hands. Thanks!
