So I have to have this piece for my trailer brakes to work? I have the plug and hitch on the back just like yours. I have a 2003 expedition and I pulled a travel trailer for the first time with this vehicle.

In order to engage and control the brakes on a trailer, you would need to plug in a brake control devise similar to what I detail in this video. My particular controller was about 50 bux
