I have been a wrench jockey since 1965 and at one time a dealership tech and time as a heavy equipment tech, my specialty was building engines, these days now that I'm dependent upon a wheelchair I now repair lawnmowers & build go-karts as you can see in some of my you-tube videos. If you remove the two hard lines from the old steering rack, it will slide out relativity easily without removing anything else. Before reinstalling, loosen the sway bar mounts. This will allow the new rack to go back in. Loose fit the new rack, re tighten the sway bar and the torque the rack mounting bolts to spec. And yep, Nissans make your forearms lot like you've tried to pet a feral cat! Another great video, thanks!

This is a great overview of the job, however for anyone about to try it, do yourself a huge favor and remove the sway bar. Takes about fifteen minutes and you can slide the rack out the drivers side no problem-no need to drop the engine.

Very helpful as I have this same car, year and everything - found my power steering high pressure hose has been leaking and tbis has been a tremendous help in not only identifying the problem part to get a replacement but also consider using the notch screwdriver method for making my alignment a bit more straighter.

Hey Eric, I didn't read all 690 comments so I may be repeating some body, that rack will come out without loosening the engine frame mounts, you just have to remove the strap that holds the anti sway bar down to the frame and remove the nut on the lower part of the link and you get enough space to wiggle the rack out.(pry bars and a slipper help.) you do very good videos. thanks for ideas.

I changed over a Nissan Sunny fitted with no power steering, used a donor Nissan Sunny but could not believe my bad luck when one steering shaft was shorter than other. Much venting later I swapped the complete steering assemble. I can relate to the scraped arms Mr Eric for sure.

Hello Sir,This is my every day job,Power steering racks,pumps and boxes,and I work on jack stands alone no lift,it's very hard. Some advice don't ever try it on Merc GL,and wire brushing the pinion(universal fitting) on new racks help with all the respraying. I love your vids keep on going!

Great video, as the "happy" owner of two Nissans I feel your pain. I always have the same problem with cut up sore fore arms and hands after working on them. I guess Nissan techs must have to wear cut proof gloves and arm protectors, or have daily blood infusions... Thanks for your videos, they are great.

FSM says remove through passenger side. I unmounted the 2 10mm bolts that mount the hose bracket to firewall and zip tied HP hoseupward to harness -that gave me enough remove to get rack out w/out having to drop subframe or remove swaybar (on my '05 1.8L). Keep motorin' B15'ers!

Did a rack job on an 01 Infiniti g20t. Alldata said nothing about dropping the frame of the vehicle. Ran to the same problem as you. What I did was drop the middle cross member off with the engine mounts. Removed the rear engine bracket of the engine block. This gave me a ton of room to move the rack to one side about a foot then drop it down back through the middle. The g20t had its own issues too made the job a pain.

That's the car I've got (also known as a Nissan Primera). What a headache it looks like (especially since I only have limited mechanical skills). The official Nissan manual mentions "Remove center member with engine mounting rear bracket". I wonder if this is too big a job for me :-( I hate to think how much the part is going to cost as well.

In case someone wants to diy this on their sentra, unbolt the rack as shown here and remove the engine crossmember (the part eric was using to hold everything with the jack). The rack should then come out of the passenger side wheel well with a little bit of fiddling. No need to remove all those suspension K member bolts. The engine will still be supported by two other engine mounts, but it is a good idea to put a jack underneath. And while you are in there, put in some delrin washers in the crossmember to cure wheel hop. Also, nissan FSM advises to remove the steering wheel. If you are not removing it, make sure that the wheel is not rotated excessively or the airbag cable will get damaged. There is a very good write up on how to do this on one of the sentra forums (allsentra, i think). I did this an year ago and it was a giant pain in the ass job.

Well gotta say this video helped so freaking much over the past couple days. Had to do the rack on a 05 and man was it a giant pain in the ass. Got it done tho however after spending over an HR trying to get the u joint back on the rack I had to remove the boot panel from cowl to get enough room to work it on there. Not sure how tf u did it without removing that stupid panel from the cowl but that's how it worked out for me lol

I could see you slowly building up stress as you struggled, i know that feeling so well. Getting the old pig of a rack fully out was great, and you knew how to put the fresh one back in, although its still a bloody pain, and never easy.

Hi Eric, fantastic videos as usual. Follower from the U.K here. I have a question that i would really extremely appreciate your help with as soon as u can. I have a Nissan Almera (n16 QG18DE) 2001 engine. This is also called a Nissan Pulsar. When replacing my drivebelts today the power steering pump pulley pivots on a bracket and needed to be tapped with hammer and block of wood to move it forward to get belt off. Doing this i seem to have dislodged the metal inlet connector attached to the pump (which the hose then attaches to and then up to power steering reservoir) The inlet connector does push back in but i think it should be fixed in place. what can can i re-fix it with i.e can i use a gasket sealant or some sort of glue? it has a very fine yellowish glue looking residue on the end that pushes back onto the pump. Your advice would be greatly appreciated as cant afford a new pump and definitely labour costs!

I have had a few of these Sentras both 03. One time I lost the power steering cap, I lost a tiny bit of power, but it dramatically slowed the leak from lower pressure haha. Probably a dumb move, but it works, I have to top it off like every 4-6 months instead of every other week. I should put some loose foil over the top to prevent splashing, but otherwise, I'm cool with it?

Yes it separated on me didnt think it was that bad when i did the brakes a week earlier but any ways the fact that when I fixed the one so i could get back to my house to replace the other side too well the fact you should make a video to show how to get the alignment close so they can get it alined at a shop ... Mr. Eric, you may want to replace the exhaust manifold and red loctite the butterfly valve screws. I own a Nissan sentra SE-R spec v and it's WELL known that those go bad and kill the car.

ive done a steering rack and had to drop subframe also, but one of the upper bolts on the subframe snapped flush leaving thread inside the car, having to drop engine, drill and retap that was fun...

While I'm not a huge fan of the steering feel of a lot of modern electric racks I am a fan of the reliability. As this video proves, rack replacement/servicing can be a complete bitch access wise, anything that helps to remove sources of failure is a good thing.
