P0446 code on 03 suburban , I drove till fuel tank was 1/8 full, pulled fuel filler hose and fuel vent hose from the rear of the fuel tank . I removed rear fuel tank holding strap while holding the fuel tank in place with a 4x4 , in case the tank might be heavy with gas. Then I loosened the front fuel tank holding strap till the fuel tank slanted far enough down in the rear that I could reach on top center of the fuel tank to twist & pry the fuel tank pressure sensor out of the fuel pump and fuel line round metal plate located near center of the fuel tank. Check to make sure the rubber seal stayed on the fuel pressure sensor and that the seal did not fall into the fuel tank. It won't damage anything but you will need a seal to reinstall the fuel pressure sensor. Now with the fuel pressure sensor still attached to the wires poor people who don't have knowledge of how to use a diagnostic computer go to Harbor Freight and use the coupons to get the free multitestor voltmeter and set the voltmeter to the DC 20 volt setting. I put safety diper pins in the rear of the fuel pressure sensor terminal. Turn the ignition switch to the on position without starting the motor. With the voltmeter set to 20volts DC the 1 & 3 terminals should read about 5volts , one of them is 5volts and the other grounds in the car's computer. Now pull the safety pins out of the terminal 1 & 3 positions and put a safety pin into the 2 wire, key on, motor not running. The center wire is the sensor wire going back to the car's computer . This center wire should read 1.4volts, blow on the sensor pressure port should go to 0.20volts , suck on it and it should go to 4.75volts or close to 5volts. It's a free meter how do you even know that it is accurate ? So close is good enough. If your fuel pressure sensor is stuck at 4.7 to 5volts or near 0.20volts it's bad. Good sensors center around 1.4volts. I bought 3 used fuel pressure sensors at the junkyard for $3 each, all 3 worked great. Good luck and remember don't embarrass Baby Jesus with your language .

Great response, you are right It’s a great way to check it if you don’t have a scan tool. Great way on explaining the circuit as well.

This is some very good information. I figured out P0446 on our 2000 Yukon. Most of the googled info I found said my EVAP vent was bad. However when I checked it’s operation by jumping it, it worked fine. After looking through my service manuals I stumbled on this sensor. Knowing what it was on the older GM’s I tested it. Found it had 5v reference and ground but the output was 0.17v. Nothing I did would change this. Slapped a new one in there and watched it and sure enough it was changing voltages around 2.5v. Code is gone now and I can get her off to emissions when the monitor set. Seriously you gave a lot more clear and concise info than my manual did and would have saved me an hour as obviously my service manual publisher misunderstood what GM meant with this code. I wish I had found this before my exploration trip. However I learned something in the process so I can’t complain.

is there something inherently wrong with these things? A relative's 2006 has needed an alternator, blower motor + resistor this summer, all of which have been replaced before our ownership. Have this p0446 code now, of which the pressure sensor has also been replaced at some point already. Are these parts suppliers making junk parts? Does the truck just eat them?

@drfrisker in my opinion I believe it's just being aftermarket parts. If you go OEM less chances of going bad.
