The Honda 250r were legendary but the big boys were all running custom built frames with big 4 stroke dirt bike motors and most of the 250r had 330 big bore engine's

Well yes 250r's are a different story and I believe if they were still available our sport would be doing great. I'm talking about the people who feel the need to have a quad taylored exactly to their needs. The dirtbikes succeed because any guy can pick up a stock 250 or 450 from the dealer, adjust the suspension, put numbers on it and race it and not get beaten because the guy next to him has a bike that looks like it came right from the factory teams.

@BradWarren8 majority of the bikes are hybrids.look closely at the leading bikes, only a couple of them have expansion chambers. not to mention the z400s and the kfxs in there.

It's ALL about the rider tho. Ive owned 250R, hybrids, and a production bike all modded of course and am equally fast on all of them on a track. I just grew up on a 250R so its always been more comfortable for me. Production bikes actually put the sport in a rise not a decline. 20-30k is way to high/ inaccurate if you know what your doing, to get a quad race ready lol.

I think the yfz was released around mid year of 03 but was designated as an 04 model....

Back then they would’ve been on either a 400ex or a custom 250r chassis fitted with a crf450 motor

Also I believe a quad can be built to race for cheap but all of the local pros are running quads with over $25k into them. Unfortunately the C class riders are also doing this. We're talking 14.5:1 compression motors on race gas that get rebuilt three times a year and full Fox suspension. These C class riders are riding pro class machines and our lightly modified quads can't keep up down the stretch or through the corners. It's ridiculous and now the pros are all quitting cause they pay for it.

A well built 250, can and will run with the 450s but the rider will have to work his ass off keeping it in the sweet spot. The 450s are more efficient power

as jayc said a 500 quadzilla in a 250 frame i also would love to see a modern day 2 stroke quad i dont understand why they are blaming emissions when they are still making 2 stroke dirt bikes please make a honda remake of the goat 400cc or so 2 stroke !

@dman250r 2strokes are stilled allowed in the bike classes, and 450's still dominate, the torque and ease of riding a 4 stroke is just a better platform, i agree that the 250R geometry is a much better design then anything we have now, but a 250R vs a CRF450 hybrid with 250R geometry, the 450 will kill it, just because the rider wont work his ass off trying to keep the 250 in the "sweet spot"

@abassett22 ..450 domination? i think its more like that's what the manufactures are allowed to sell do to some lame restrictions. to this day i still smoke 450s with my 25 year old quad. just think of what they could do to a 2stroke if they were allowed the funding to further research and modernize these old beast's. not saying 450's are not any good, its just they are squeezing out all the power they can out of the 450 motor. which makes for expensive top end rebuilds. Better to keep it simple

@dman250r oh i can swear with the best of them, lol... but yea, no point getting all hurt about someone having a different opinion... i really dont think a 450 2 stroke would be fair against a 450 4 stroke... you get twice the detonation per cycle, of course they are gonna be faster... isnt KTM making a 330 or something now? that would be a fair start against a 450

I hate to say it but that's the reason our sport is in the crapper. It's not a sport of skill, it's a sport of who can afford the custom setup. The amateur class is based on who has the most money to build their quad right. If we all just rode stock and slightly modified quads and settled for that, it'd level the playing field for the riders who have the talent but don't have the money for a $20,000-$30,000 machine. Of course it's better but it's not necessary.

@abassett22 true it is easier to ride longer on the 450 but i think its most enjoyable to watch a race that shows the skill of driving... which is easier to tell on a 2stroke. anyways thanks for not being one of those boneheads who just start swearing like many of these youtubers who have no idea what they are talking about. its rare to find intelligent users on here. anyways not to start another debate...but to equal things change regulations to 450cc 2stroke to run with 450 4stroke :)
