Noisy steering?
This episode shows how to swap out a power steering pump.
I’ve learned They do not often go bad, but usually will be leaking or noisy, and can be rebuilt much less expensively using this:
www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/t...
A remanufactured unit will most likely be an OEM unit, rebuilt. Napa offers them and they have a lifetime warranty.
First, clean you reservoir.
Secondly: If power steering pump is not noisy or leaking- go directly to the Rack.
That is next most likely, as these services did not silence my steering, but they did help.

Just replaced my power steering pump on my 2002 Tacoma 3.4 V6 today. I'm the original owner with 110,000 miles. Factory pump lasted me 18yrs. This is the official factory part number. Description: U-23 Pump, Part # 44320-04052. You truck had the OEM power steering pump. Paid $350 my OEM pump and it is NEW not remanufactured.

Good video J Lee! I have an 03 double cab too. 155k on it. I get a squeal when starting truck. The steering does not work like it use too. I did the timing belt 2 years ago. I think I may have made the belt to tight and it has worn the pump. I bought it new and have never changed the fluid. Gonna try the flush and clean the reservoir first. No leaking around rack and truck drives straight down the road so based on that? I think rack is fine.

That's exactly my same problem, how can we detach the line without risking on ripping it from the force of a breaker bar if that banjo bolt seized in there with the pump?

I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pre runner V6 i just had my rack opinion replaced and the power steering unit replaced and for some odd reason when you turn the wheel either one direction or the other direction at binds and then releases is that a faulty pump?
@TrevDB99
@TrevDB99 2 жыл бұрын
Hey J Lee did you ever figure out the issue. I’m also getting some groaning from my power steering pump and my wheel is a little harder to turn that usual. I don’t think the fluid has ever been changed so I’m gonna start with flushing the power steering fluid.
@JLeeChron
@JLeeChron 2 жыл бұрын
Yea, flush and clean the reservoir. Still no leaks or catastrophe here, so I run it as is. When the temps turn cold, the groaning is more noticeable. I’ve also looked into the alternator as the culprit, but the truck just runs and operates reliably so its the “if not broke don’t fix” approach, just regular maintenance for now.

Trying to replace my power steering pump on my 2001 tacoma, 4 cylinder. I'm having trouble getting both bolts in to attach to the motor. I can get one in, but not both at the same time. Did you run into this issue at all?

I got a rebuild rack and pinion for my 2001 4runner v6, same as your taco, im about to change out the pump since i thought it was the rack i replace rack first, but its hard to steer, no power at all, i bought a rack on amazon with rebate only cost about 75buck.
@JLeeChron
@JLeeChron 4 жыл бұрын
dang0088 da I would replace rack obly with OEM or rebuilt oem. The consensus is aftermarkets are not good quality and don’t last as long. If your PS pump is bad, it will be making noise or leaking pretty badly. Hope it works out for you

@dangda-ww7de 4 жыл бұрын
@@JLeeChron its not leaking , making a little noise and hard to turn, i bought a used one from a junkyard and will be putting it in and see. For 75buck for a rack is a deal i can live with.

I'm at 190k bout to turn 200k with my 2001 tacoma, and wouldn't you know I have all the same problems that I'm about to work on. Wouldn't surprise me either that you just changed out your alternator too.

Hello, I have a potential solution for you as I have just finished solving an extremely similar problem. Have you replaced your AC idler pulley yet? That seemed to fix my problem after a power steering pump replacement didn’t do the trick. It’s relatively cheap and took me about an hour :)
@JLeeChron
@JLeeChron 2 жыл бұрын
Was it a low groan in cooler/cold weather? That sound isn’t as pronounced when warm out. I am inclined to think more of an alternator being the culprit, will look into that though thanks

haven't had a chance- summer, whine was almost non existent, as its gotten colder it has returned, might be the lines, maybe the alternator. just no time to throw parts at it or rebuild alternator. -might soon though. I dont think it is the rack quite yet...just not sure

The high-pressure steering line has been my only problem with detaching from the pump. How can I remove that banjo bolt? I managed to get it somewhat loose but the problem was that the line itself moved at the same time as the bolt and i dont want to risk on ripping the pressure line with too much force from the breaker bar 🥲
@JLeeChron

There should be a tab on the line that locks it in place from moving when tightening or loosening. Check for it on the backside -might need a hand
