2003 Volkswagen Beetle Ultima Edition - FINAL EDITION

So just what makes this Beetle so special? It's not the first one made, and it's not the last one made - but it comes close: This particular example is an Última Edición - one of the final Bugs made in Mexico before production ended there in 2003. It's decked out in beige with a black fabric interior and none - repeat, none - of the bells and whistles.

Hard to believe this has literally been in production for 65 years in a single generation. It wasn’t a retro-styled car, it was the real deal since it debuted in 1938 and only received facelifts until the end of its production in 2003.

I used to love these cars as a kid. I didn't get my driver's license until 1981, and there were still plenty of them on the road back then, but when I considered getting a used one, everyone was telling me not to do it, so I didn't. Damn....

I hear want you are saying. But what I want to remind you of when it comes to this car in this video.. This isn't a classic Beetle. This is a final year Beetle built in either 2003 or 2004 in Mexico, built right along alongside the Volkswagen New Beetle.. And somehow through the black market, this car made it to the United States.

Imagine being such an iconic vehicle that a factory in Mexico builds you the exact same way up until 2003. I have a Camry from the same year, and it feels light years ahead in terms of safety standards and what not. Hell, VW was already building the newer Beetles for the previous 6 years! It’s very bizarre and fascinating, honestly.

Pixelcitizen I completely agree with what you’re saying.. and I also own a 1999 New Beetle. I’m 34 and bought that car 2 years ago. When I was 17 through the age of 27, I owned a first year model 1998 New Beetle.

Yes they are with air conditioned etc, cd, etc. you have to add it to the price tag in the dealership.

Just curious; could you in theory, do an Autostick conversion on one this new?

Why would you want to? The "autostick" was a lousy system. Learn to drive a stick, the VW beetle is a very easy car to learn on. I learned to drive stick on one when I was 16.

The only thing riuning this car is that stupid rack on top. I don't like racks on modern bugs. Modern bugs are, for me, all the mexican bugs made from the 80s to 2000s.
