A guy I once knew owned a few classic cars, including a 1957 Chevy. At a car show many years ago before I knew much about the classics, I was walking around with him and spotted a car that I thought looked like his, but a different color. It was a four-door. He brushed it off as "too many doors." lol

Summer before HS, Bro, wife and i take a trip in this car from the SFO area to Disneyland, a gift to me ! Everything was so much fun, from the trip to the 'park'. ha, 81 i move and neighbor across the street has an orange beetle. Of course had to ask him about it soon as good. Mexico stamp in the engine sill frame. Story was, they won money at Reno and bought the car which became his daily driver. Poor guy's gone now but i believe the car is still on the property. Moving the signal lights into the bumper was inspired by US carmakers who realized there was an endless stream of big cash because any parking lot contact would destroy an expensive light fixture, when normally there would be zero damage.

So this was one of the very final productions of the type 1 Volkswagen Beetle made in 2004 in Puebla Mexico. My father owned a 1965 and a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle, so I remember these Volkswagen Beetles from my young years. It is amazing that the production of Volkswagen Beetles continued for many years in Mexico and were sold in Mexico. However if I remember right by 1980 no new Volkswagen Beetles were sold in the United States. These are interesting cars from the past that will never be made again because of modern safety regulations and modern emission standards. However for a period of time these were main economy car, that was very basic and simple to work on.

You could tell that it was destined for the Mexican market, through countless anti-theft sensors and V.I.N. numbers either stamped or engraved onto every part. I once owned a '74 Super Beetle, in the early 80s, of which was the genuine German ancestor to the vehicle featured here. I loved that car dearly. It was truly a pleasure to own and drive. When I bought it, it needed a ball joint. To save money I foolishly opted for a Mexican replacement part of which popped itself out on the freeway. When I returned with it to the store where I bought it, the proprietor had a shocked look on his face and then exchanged the part for a genuine expensive German one. I assume, he feared future law suits. He probably immediately emptied his shelf from the slip-shod items, as soon as I left

Hello stranger getting to look at this video (at least) almost 4 years after its publication! I translated the bigger text on the VW manual if you want to give a sense of what it said: At the beginning of the 20’s, the concept of a popular automobile originated in Ferdinand Porsche's mind. In 1954, the year of the Volkswagen presentation in Mexico, the country only had 30 million inhabitants. From there, a story full of emotions began, with tells of dreams, feelings, life-changing situations, and triumphs. After all, who doesn’t have something to tell around a Sedan?* Every Vocho**, has a story, and each story has an ending. *This section means telling something involving a VW Bug, even if by accident. **Vocho is the most popular name given to the VW Bug in Mexico.

They made a mistake, VW never produced a beetle with a larger engine than a 1,600cc the reason of the engine sizes in the sticker is because at the time VW was producing in their Puebla plant other types of cars and the reason for the one pipe exhaust is because by the time the car was manufactured they had catalythic converters to comply with emissions, the man has a jewel. I like VW, we own 4 cars, 3 of the are VW's, we have a 2005 vento turbodiesel (made in India), great little car, we have 2016 jetta 5 cylinder 2.5, a rather inneficient engine, we have a 2019 SEAT leon, nice car, SEAT is the spanish VW brand, and a 2019 BWM series 2 coupe that shares it's german soul with the others, I'm growing old for the BMW, too low and hard suspension even in it's softest setting however it's technology is nothing short of amazing, thorough the years I've owned 4 beetles, fond memories, when we were young my best friend had a 1200CC combi, we had memorable trips to the beach on terrible roads and living from what we coud stuff above the engine cover, most importan alcohol, sleeping in the sand or in the cramped middle of teh combi, we had a nice stereo and we got girls, it was great. VW, is part of my life.

I guess the sticker describes all the engines you could get in the VW line up at the time. The 2.8 is simply the VR6 engine (for Golfs or Jettas). The beetle has the 1.6, 45HP engine. Beetles never had anything above that fitted as standard in terms of displacement.

Hi, Lou! When I saw the caption for this video, I was a bit confused, as in "This is a 2004?" So am I to understand that Beetles built in Mexico continued in the original style after the last of those were sold in the U.S. in 1979 (the last sedans in 1977) and continued to be until 2004 even though the "New Beetles" had been sold in the U.S. since 1998? BTW, 95.3 kilometers is about 59.2 miles, and yes it is cute, from frunk to back!
@loucostabile3 жыл бұрын
Hi iswc27, Yes, in 2004 sold new in Mexico, Lou
@iinerd2 жыл бұрын
In US they stopped officially sedan import with model year 1978 and with model year 1979 for convertibles (model year 1979 ended the production in Jan 1980). However in Europe when production in Germany ended in Jan 1978, VW imported Mexican beetles up to model year 1986. OF course I remember there was then 'parallel' import by thirdy parts but official beetles import ended in EU later than US. To repsond to your question, in Mexico original 'old' sedan beeltes stopped the production in July 2003 (with this model year 2004) with last 3000 'ultima edition' pieces. After 1986 the official market was only meant to be internal. New beetle was also produced in mexico only for the whole market worldwide: it started in the late 90ies. This means that in Puebla planst since 1997-1998 VW produced 'new beetle' side by side the original sedan for almost 7 years. Then new beetle only up to late '10s. Regards.

I remember you couldn't sling a dead cat without hitting a VW Beetle. They were everywhere even through the 1980s. I also remember going to Mexico on a mission trip in 1997 and we passed a VW dealership. It blew my mind seeing all those "old" Beetles sitting there as brand new cars for sale. How hard is it to import one of those Beetles to the US? It would have to be cheaper than restoring an old one. I like most cars you show, but I want this one!

It goes to show how "right" the original engineering concept was that it remained fit for purpose for so long. I drove a couple in the 1970s in Australia. They drove with a feeling of "weight" on the road that most small cars of the era didn't have. They were great on the less than stellar roads of Australia at the time. Not fast, you never-the-less could maintain a respectable average speed over distances that are similar to those in the US. And they were surprisingly comfortable. I had one as my first car and I still miss it

Wow! Lou, you and Mr. Roxworthy are always full of Kinder Surprises! Love this Bug, and always enjoy Mr. Roxworthy's great variety, and taste in cars. One of the biggest things I miss about growing up in the 70s, was all the Bugs (and VW Things), that made the roads so much more fun. Just love the sound of the flat four!

A cool Bug story: In 1974, our family toy poodle escaped from our back yard, and ran out in front of an orange Super Beetle driven by a young woman. She slammed on her brakes, as the poodle was on it's side, sliding on the pavement, forward of the right front tire. I believe the lightweight front end of the Beetle, saved his life. As a heavier car would have rode through the dog. Not 'pushed' it along. The dog was scared, but survived! With burnt rubber marks on his tummy for the next couple months. : )
