A guy I once knew owned a few classic cars, including a 1957 Chevy. At a car show many years ago before I knew much about the classics, I was walking around with him and spotted a car that I thought looked like his, but a different color. It was a four-door. He brushed it off as "too many doors." lol

It goes to show how "right" the original engineering concept was that it remained fit for purpose for so long. I drove a couple in the 1970s in Australia. They drove with a feeling of "weight" on the road that most small cars of the era didn't have. They were great on the less than stellar roads of Australia at the time. Not fast, you never-the-less could maintain a respectable average speed over distances that are similar to those in the US. And they were surprisingly comfortable. I had one as my first car and I still miss it

Wow! Lou, you and Mr. Roxworthy are always full of Kinder Surprises! Love this Bug, and always enjoy Mr. Roxworthy's great variety, and taste in cars. One of the biggest things I miss about growing up in the 70s, was all the Bugs (and VW Things), that made the roads so much more fun. Just love the sound of the flat four!

A cool Bug story: In 1974, our family toy poodle escaped from our back yard, and ran out in front of an orange Super Beetle driven by a young woman. She slammed on her brakes, as the poodle was on it's side, sliding on the pavement, forward of the right front tire. I believe the lightweight front end of the Beetle, saved his life. As a heavier car would have rode through the dog. Not 'pushed' it along. The dog was scared, but survived! With burnt rubber marks on his tummy for the next couple months. : )

Summer before HS, Bro, wife and i take a trip in this car from the SFO area to Disneyland, a gift to me ! Everything was so much fun, from the trip to the 'park'. ha, 81 i move and neighbor across the street has an orange beetle. Of course had to ask him about it soon as good. Mexico stamp in the engine sill frame. Story was, they won money at Reno and bought the car which became his daily driver. Poor guy's gone now but i believe the car is still on the property. Awesome car. I had two 1967s when i lived in the cal desert. Made them into baja bugs.they were amazing cars. Needed to be wrenched on a lot but worth it. Most fun ever running up the mountains and thru creekbeds and scrubrush. They would practically go up vertical hills. If VW made these again, exactly like they were tho, theyd sell 50 million of them in one year. Every car enthusiast and young person in the world would buy these and start customizing them. They were $1999 new in 1969. Another great find by master Lou!. Oh PS, me and wife Laura still play punch buggy game. She socked me good yesterday, two in a row. We have extra punches for, wild exotic colors, accessories, out of state plates, original 60s bugs and a few other things we can crack each other in the arm for. Fun

So this was one of the very final productions of the type 1 Volkswagen Beetle made in 2004 in Puebla Mexico. My father owned a 1965 and a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle, so I remember these Volkswagen Beetles from my young years. It is amazing that the production of Volkswagen Beetles continued for many years in Mexico and were sold in Mexico. However if I remember right by 1980 no new Volkswagen Beetles were sold in the United States. These are interesting cars from the past that will never be made again because of modern safety regulations and modern emission standards. However for a period of time these were main economy car, that was very basic and simple to work on.

I admired the VW engine, especially its simplicity. Having no antifreeze, no water hoses, radiators, and pumps eliminated much of the headache of an IC engine of that period. I never owned one because frankly, they were just too slow, but I sure worked on a lot of them. VW introduced the Type 1 (Beetle) replacement in the 70’s, called the Rabbit in the US market, and it was a far superior car to the Type 1 by every measure, but the old Beetle was still king at trouble-free operation.

You could tell that it was destined for the Mexican market, through countless anti-theft sensors and V.I.N. numbers either stamped or engraved onto every part. I once owned a '74 Super Beetle, in the early 80s, of which was the genuine German ancestor to the vehicle featured here. I loved that car dearly. It was truly a pleasure to own and drive. When I bought it, it needed a ball joint. To save money I foolishly opted for a Mexican replacement part of which popped itself out on the freeway. When I returned with it to the store where I bought it, the proprietor had a shocked look on his face and then exchanged the part for a genuine expensive German one. I assume, he feared future law suits. He probably immediately emptied his shelf from the slip-shod items, as soon as I left

The inclusion of the fire extinguisher is because the VW Beetle was widely used in Mexico as a taxi. The public passenger transport regulations specify that it is mandatory to have a fire extinguisher as basic equipment. At first the taxi drivers themselves modified their vehicles, but over time VW itself included this standard equipment for the convenience of its customers.

This was literally a classic car you could buy brand new until the end of its production. Because the body remained the same and the model only received facelifts during its entire production life. Plus, this body shape was normal in 1938.

This is wild Lou! Did they also sell the “new style” Beetle in Mexico when this was out in 2004? It reminds me of the Checker Marathon (a good car for you to review) that kept the same styling for many years!

I’ll second that wish for a Checker Marathon review, Lou. Wow, haven’t thought of that car in years. And make sure to invite your son, your editor, and maybe a friend to pile into the car with you and the driver. There will STILL be room to spare!

Beautiful piece of car history. Did the Última Edición came from the factory lacking A/C, was an option or the retro parts kept it from having A/C like other 2000s Beetles?

Moving the signal lights into the bumper was inspired by US carmakers who realized there was an endless stream of big cash because any parking lot contact would destroy an expensive light fixture, when normally there would be zero damage.

2.8 liters = 170 CI. I wonder why the glove box door does not lay flat or horizontal? or does it? I wonder why VW removed the fresh air vents from behind the hood, at windshield?, because it's a 68 body and looks to be 68 type padded dash? The "Blade" style bumper ended in 1967 replaced by the "Channel" type bumper with no over-rider bars. There is an indentation at rear of quarter windows for a 1970s trim piece which is missing. Rear tail light assembly is from later model 75 and up on a basic 68 body. The fire extinguisher is most likely included because the fuel injected late model Beetles were all quite prone FI engine fires. No license plates as I believe Mexico Beetle could not meet US emissions requirements, unless that has changed recently. Nice Bug!

Really enjoyed the overview and ride. Thanks Lou! I may inherit a '95 Mexi-bug but it hasn't been registered in the states, and now I've got to figure out how to register this car (only 500 mi) in Cali without any documentation. Don't suppose you (or Dennis) could lend me some advice on how to get a '95 Mexi-bug without any documentation, registered in California (Placer County to be exact). Next question is; what's the value of a '95 Mexi-bug with 500 miles and in perfect condition (similar to Dennis' without the plastic). thanks!
