Good video. If you’re not handy and know your next move. You’ll be doing this for 2 days -lolo. I did this job. A real pain on your back. You’ll need the right tools for this. Not running around getting them as you need them. A tough one for sure.

Hi JM, I've been watching many of your videos and they are all very informative and helpful. I am very impressed with your in-depth and detailed step-by-step instructions. I just have a question and wondering if you know. I think some of your audients mentioned that you are in Long Island. I want to cut my brake rotors instead of replacing them. Do you know any machine shops or auto repair shops do brake rotors cutting ?

This is my 2nd time watching this video. But I always learn new things from your video. Thank you so much. How do you know if the new rack is already centered ? If the new rack is not centered, can you still connect it to the steering shaft ? If the new rack is not centered, how do you adjust it and make it centered because you taped the steering wheel and is expecting a centered new rack ?
@JM-AUTO
@JM-AUTO 5 ай бұрын
sorry this is my fault because I did not mention this, either I showed it on camera, you just turn the shaft on the steering rack completely to one side then to the other side counting the rounds then turn it back and stay on half way of the rounds and that is centered it, always mark the old one before pulling it out just in case so it can help you just for any confusion.

First and foremost, Thank you very much for this video. I also really like how you made it easy for us viewers to understand your explanations. I'm about to do this job but only want to replace the bushings on the rack. I would really appreciate if you could help me in my following question. 1. Do you think it's possible to lift up the steering rack to access and replace the two rack bushings without disassembling the steering intermediate shaft? 2. Where can I find your materials? especially the material shown at 40 seconds. Super Thank You Very Much in Advance!
@JM-AUTO
@JM-AUTO 6 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! unfortunately it is not possible to lift up the steering rack with out pulling out the intermediate shaft, you can try but it is almost for sure you are going to damage it. to use the software I pay monthly and I have to be registered but there are subscriptions with ACDelco for even one month, 3 moths and one year for specific cars or unlimited every thing will depend on how the person wants to, unlimited requires to be registered as an outo tech unless they have changed because I have been doing this for so many years, I believe you can have access it for free in certain libraries.

@@JM-AUTO I just watched the 2nd video of this repair. Even if it's just the reversed of everything, I was still able to learn new things. Your techniques are awesome and reminds me of how my Dad works. Too bad my Dad lives far away. Again, I have few more questions if you don't mind. 1. My Van makes a couple of ding sound and the traction off light comes on when I make a bit of a hard turn to the left at a speed of 35mph. My steering rack doesn’t leak and I believe it’s still in good shape. However the bushings on them are totally damaged. Do you think replacing the bushings fixes this problem? 2. How many hours did you do this job? As always, Big Thanks in advance. ^_^

@@IBO8Jaeger thanks for sharing, it might fix it unless the issue is someting else but definitely worn out bushings will cause problem to the steering rack since it is going to move to the sides and it is going to damage it, I did in about 5 hours.

I've been told I need an entirely new rack and pinion steering on my 2008 Sienna for the past 8 years because it's "leaking." Well, I have zero drips on the driveway and I barely add a few ounces of fluid every 3 years or so. Latest estimate and "urgent" repair quote was for $1,307. Zero steering issues all those years. Get a second opinion is my best advice.
@JM-AUTO

Our 2005 has been leaking since 2009 (as you describe exactly...hardly fluid loss, damp no drips etc). Just now starting to have major issues that I'm researching.

@@JM-AUTO thank you for the information sir. I had one more question if possible. In your experience, i have a rack n pinion on my 04 sienna awd, that has a leaking driverside seal, nowhere else on the racknpinion is leaking, and power steering pump that is wet with power steering fluid . the van only loses fluid when the car is in motion only. When it is parked or idling, no matter if you are constantly turning the wheel, the fluid will not leak out if in park at all. There are no spots on the pavement of the powersteering fluid anywhere. However. If i take the car for a drive, there is barely any fluid in the resavoir. The pump is noisy & there is no problem or change with the steering feel because there is still some fluid in the resavoir. I take the van around the block and it will go from the middle of cold to a half inch under the cold line. Based on your experience do you think that leaking is coming from the pump while under the load in drive?
@JM-AUTO
@JM-AUTO 3 ай бұрын
@@ro6721 best way to find the leak, clean it with any spray cleaner all the mess any where I use started fluid when engine is off then get the engine to run as usually anitle bit n park it again n see the leaks again n you will see where the leak is coming from.

1 more question to JM. I watched another video from this guy DIY Dave on KZbin. He was doing the same thing ... replacing the rack & pinion on his 2008 Sienna. He was really struggling. However, he was finally able to put a new one in. But the VSC and the TRAC OFF lights came on. He had to use a software on his computer to do a reset to make those lights go away. Did you have the same problem ? If you don't, what did he do wrong ?
@JM-AUTO

hi and thanks for sharing, i did not get light on the instrument cluster, dont know if he hammered hard on some thing so when banging hard close to the ABS sensors will most of the time trigger a bunch of light, some times you you will get those lights only with the fact of lifting up the car, if this is the case all you do is reset the pcm/abs control module. you always can ask me any questions any time if i know the answer i gladly give it to you thanks again and stay bless.

@@JM-AUTOthanks. I’m taking it out now, a couple notes. The very first sway bar link bolt didn’t want to come loose. I ended up using 6mm Allen to hold the bearing and using 17mm box end to twist, after lots of brake cleaner and pb blaster. Also 2008 I guess is a different engine. I can’t find any way to get at the sway bar bushings from up top, and oil fill is in a different location than the video. Accessible from below. Not easy though!
