What info after the 6 minute mark still applies to 2004 - 2006 Sienna’s, the radiator issue? Is the coolant plate issue and oil line (with the rubber in the middle) all 2007 - 2010 issues, non 3.3L issues? That wasn’t 100% clear to me.

Thank you so much for this video and the information you share! You saved me almost $8000. The 2009 Toyota Sienna I bought had a bad transmission. The day after I bought it, I noticed it made a scratching/scraping noise while idling down from less than 40 mph with no foot on the brake or gas. I searched Google to figure out what was wrong and came across your video. It got my Spidey senses up when you talked about the transmission noise. I called the dealer (Prime Auto, Wichita, KS - Sanjay) and he said it was probably a noise from a minor rub in the brakes and to bring it back and they would fix it. It seemed feasible until I had two reputable local mechanics drive it and they said it was a bad transmission. They said there was no way to know how long it would last before it needed a new one, but the sound was the gears grinding each other. I called the dealer and took the van back and had to politely argue with the dealer that the transmission was bad. He said I took the van to "back alley small town mechanics" who wanted to make money off of me. He also said I was paranoid repeatedly. I told him the other mechanics knew they weren't fixing but only diagnosing the car and that I had researched the issue and found the same information. After much back and forth and gaslighting, I kept pushing about returning the van. He said he could give me $4000 for the van I paid $8000 for a few days prior, since it was now a "trade-in." I was getting very frustrated and told him it either needed a new transmission now or he could take it back and give us our trade-in back. He finally said I could take it to Toyota in Wichita and have them diagnose it and go by what they said. The service advisor at Toyota started describing what the van did and I thought it was from my message. He said it came up when he put in the VIN (this info didn't come up on an AutoCheck :( ) and that the former owner had been advised it needed a new transmission. It took a few more days to get our trade back and get the title and payment through, but I am so thankful for this video. I listened to my gut and checked it out after finding this information and stood my ground! Thank you for the information and for giving me confidence in the facts!

Bless you brother! Your expert rundown is awesome and oh so valuable to those able to receive it. Wish that there was such a report for every car I have owned - even better is text report one could stick in their glove box for review. BTW, as to the alternator issue, serpentine belts are SO much better than the old v belts but one change that had to be made to go to them was to the alternator. Engine rotation speed goes up and down each cylinder firing. The alternator is a flywheel and "fights" that. Many older mechanics remember the vibration of V belts due to this. Newer alternators have a rubber shock absorber coupler that solves that. Apparently that coupler can go bad and you get belt chirping (and faster wear on the belt).

TO "THE CAR CARE NUT": You wrote (in a comment below): "I would replace the timing belt at around 90k miles. I would replace the water pump, drive belts cam and crank seals at the same time as you'll save on labor this way." I don't own a Sienna yet, but I am wanting one and doing some research now. MY QUESTION: What would a comprehensive service like you recommend above cost? (rough total, including mechanic labor and parts). I have no idea, and just want an idea of what doing all that at once might add to my initial cost of the used vehicle (say a 2006 to 2008 model). Most of the used Siennas I have seen in my target price range have 180K or more miles, so I expect they will need the Timing Belt or chain replaced. But I would like a rough idea of how much I would have to pay to have your recommended repairs (all of the above you recommended) done by someone (parts + labor = Total). Just so I can budget prior to purchase of a high mileage van. Thanks for the helpful video and your answers below (I read them all, and took notes, prior to asking this question).

Hi! Your 2004-2006 will have a timing belt 2007 and up has a chain. On the chain ones you don’t have to do anything. The timing it’s hard to put an exact figure because of parts prices but it’s a 6 hour job for everything. Labor rate per hour for dealerships varies by area in Chicago it’s around 140-150 per hour. Figure another 400-500 in original parts at full price. Many variables that would change the price dramatically. Original vs aftermarket parts. Original parts with discounts….etc

My mechanic friend did 2 timing belts and I did spark plugs twice. But it ran like new. The transmission another conversation. Sadly I never heard of transmission flushes and by the time had the dealer do the 1st one at 126k miles damage had already occurred. If my son had not totaled it in a crash I was looking at a new transmission. Great vehicle and yes I would have put a brand new transmission in it if it had not been totaled.

I bought an 05 Sienna last August with 193,000 miles, one owner, for $5,500. I probably wouldn't have purchased it with that many miles however the guy had all maintenance done at Toyota Dealerships & the Car Fax showed everything from timely oil changes to a radiator replacement; records since day one. No leaks, no problems. The van just turned over 200,000. I pull a small/lightweight tear drop trailer with the Sienna so I want to keep her going for a long time. First owner had the timing belt changed at 96,000 so it's my turn now to replace it again. This video made me realize that I need to do the complete 'package' i.e. timing belt, drive belts, water pump & cam & crank seals at the same time. My other car is an 08 Prius; I love them both! My husband just picked up an 07 Toyota Yaris for $1,000 to do the running around for his business. The engine & tranny are in excellent condition with 153,000 miles. Hi AMD, it's me again. I just want to ask you a couple of question regarding my 2008 Sienna (I purchased it on late 2007). You mentioned about two common problems regarding my Sienna, the: 1. Oil Cooler Line. Last night, I spent so much time looking for it, and even removed the underneath plastic cover, but did not find it at all. So I took it to Toyota dealer this morning (without the cover), and they told me that my engine does not have it. The mechanic knows exactly what I was talking about, he crawled underneath my van in front of me, and confirmed that my 3.5 engine does not have that type of Oil Cooler line. Any thing I should do/replace? 2. Regarding the VVTI oil feed line. Does my engine has that? Or my engine has the "improved" metal line already and I don't have to worry about it anymore? THANK YOU for your continuous response and VIDEO UPLOADS. We have 5 Toyota vehicles and only one Honda. All your videos are not just full of information but also very helpful to me as a DIY mechanic.

I've had a 2004 Sienna since 2012 (now 2022) and driven it 200k KM's to 360K KM's. We've also had the coolant plate leak, and have recently noticed pink coolant from rear bank of engine. It has stopped in the last 6 months but not sure how long it will last without having to replace head gasket (which I won't do because of age). Thanks for the informative videos.

I got a free 2005 Sienna with 201,000 kilometers (120,000 miles) from a family member. I thought I could replace the obviously unsafe tires and the timing belt and cover most of what it needed. I quickly found out it is unsafe to drive and needs a new steering rack. The front brakes are a minimum and it seems the power steering is leaking. It also has engine codes for evap and catalytic converter. I am now wondering if it is even worth fixing. I am unable to do any of it myself. The paint isn't perfect, but the interior is clean. It was only driven locally and only put on 12,000 miles in the last five years. It looks like a case of deferred maintenance.

Great and very informative, even for the owners. My wife calls ours a “Tank”. Because the beast is unstoppable in the winter on proper winter tires. As a ten year owner myself of 2008 AWD I can tell you the following: the 3.5 is pretty awesome and super powerful-ours tows 14” enclosed trailer with ease. Pop up behind it doesn’t even gets noticed. I changed a water pump myself one afternoon at 145,000km and it’s not hard at all. I changed all spark plugs preventatively with recommended platinum tipped and won’t have to worry about them for the rest of its life. I changed to an updated trans oil cooler lines that are all metal because our van tows a lot. I replaced the rubber elbow on the upper oil line to an updated part but sadly I didn’t go for an all solid metal tube at a time. Our van doesn’t leak a drop of oil from anywhere, period. Not even from trans or the tiniest transfer box ever, that it has for the rear prop shaft. I fixed/rebuild a squeaking alternator and let me tell you, those suckers are NOT easy to remove from engine-you will be draining the coolant and dropping the radiator slightly. It’s that bad. And that’s about it really. One other thing is a steering rack-not sure if mine was replaced before but the current one has been leaking from pass side outer seal into the rubber boot. I treated the oil with rubber rejuvenation fluid and it’s been unchanged for the last 7 years now. I am of the same opinion that’s if it’s too much work and the part is expensive, let it work for now and let it develop. Oh yes and last but not least, are those stupid tensioner rollers. They absolutely WILL drive you insane with noise and even OEM Toyota part will star squeaking eventually but usually only when it’s cold out. You can only change two of them because the actual tensioner roller is slightly different and isn’t sold separately like the other position #2 rollers.

As an owner of a 2004 XLE LIMTED AWD Sienna, I am very interested in this video. I learned a few things from watching, so thank you. At around 40 km/h, my Sienna would "kick/jerk" forward. It does not matter if accelerating or decelerating. I know it is a transmission thing. Is this something that can only be fixed with the transmission down or replaced? Does it need to be fixed or can I live with it?
@TheCarCareNut4 жыл бұрын
Hello Tikon. Sorry this comment slipped through and I didn’t see it in time. Has the transmission fluid been changed? I would also check the rear mount on the rear differential that I talked about in the video. Although that would be more when accelerating but wouldn’t hurt to check it.

My sienna puked an ATF+Coolant milkshake as soon as I pulled into my driveway yesterday. I will be changing the rad this weekend and transmission fluid as well. Any tips? Hope I didn't break the trans. Is there a way I can tell if I need to flush the trans instead of just fill?
@TheCarCareNut3 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that. I would actually flush the transmissions and cooling system in this case. But first drain and fill the transmission with fresh fluid then flush it to minimize contamination. I’d follow it up with another flush in a few days. Coolant has a terrible effect on transmission clutches which could be permanent so getting all the coolant out of the transmission is very important. On the cooling system the damage is not severe or permanent. You might still have a milkshake looking coolant which you’d just replace again and be good.

I just bought a 2010 and it has a vibration at just off idle, the upper engine mount was broken and the exhaust seal, I replaced both but the vibration still exists. Runs fine otherwise. The other motor mounts "look" good. Will change the spark plugs but this seems like a motor mount. The console vibrates badly but only at around 1300 RPM or at very light accel - especially when cold. I still think I have a bad mount.

@TheCarCareNut4 жыл бұрын
I would say no. That's actually a late 2018. 2018 models start around June or July of 2017 so yours is actually one of the last 2018 models before 2019 came out. It could still be covered if any issues come up with the transmission but I doubt it.

@Mr.Technical772 жыл бұрын
So basically these vans leak everywhere you can imagine, and you should replace everything you see and don’t see. A tune up is not even possible without hours long tear downs costing up to a couple grand in parts and labor since you might as well replace everything you see while you’re there. In case you think these are just precautions you can ignore, as is sometimes the case, it is not the case here. These parts will begin to fail one after another and the previous owners have an uncanny sense of when that is. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck and buy this vehicle used, there’s a strong likelihood you could get stuck with a van you literally cannot afford to maintain and/or fix due to the price of the parts, inaccessibility of routine items, and runaway hourly rates for mechanics charging like they went to law or medical school. People still pay it though. Good luck getting an emergency fix on this pile of tin even if you can afford it. You’ll be out of work for weeks waiting for an appointment. To top it off the sliding doors fail, sometimes repeatedly opening and trying to close right where your kids might be sitting. I’m flabbergasted that many people think these are good vehicles to own. Possibly for the original owner, but if they didn’t maintain anything don’t buy it. If they say they’ve never had to do anything to it because it’s never given them any problems, those problems will become yours to the tune of thousands of dollars. If you’re buying one and it has over 100,000-125,000 but never had a tuneup, and I mean an extensive and thorough tuneup, run from it. I’ve seen a couple poor folks have to pay up to $600 every time a coil or injector fails because they can’t afford to buy a whole set and pay the labor for tearing the whole back end of the engine compartment apart to get to even a simple spark plug. Even if you can do it yourself, don’t think you’re going to get off easy with cheap Amazon or eBay knockoffs. He’s right, There’s such a high defect rate among them that you may install it all and find out you have to do it all over again. You’re going to spend around $89 and up per OEM coil, the same or more for injectors which also fail, $10.50 per spark plug, $24 or more for plenum gasket, and the list goes on adding up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars in parts you can’t afford but also can’t afford to miss. You can take a chance on cheap parts or parts that claim to be OEM on Amazon, sure, but you’ll also find yourself in the same situation again either immediately or within a year or 11,000 miles. Read the feedback people are giving on those parts. Bottom line of this rant, unless you’re like me and keep some healthy savings and can do the work yourself, run from this POS before you get gotten, stuck with a pile of metal oozing leaks out of every crevice apparently, that you can’t afford to fix and can’t sell. This model van is nothing but trouble. Other than that it’s been great, very spacious. By that I mean it’s empty, because it’s always breaking something and nobody is in it.

An 04 Lexus RX330 AWD with a wheel bearing noise that seemed to practically disappear swerving to the right (weight transfers to the left side).Figured just the RF wheel bearing is bad and put it up on 4 stands , put it in gear and and bring up to a speed I hear a humming noise, more inboard and I confirm a humming noise sound coming from the right side of the front transfer unit where the right drive axle exits. I'm hoping I can take the surrounding bolts off the circular seal retainer of the transfer unit where the right side drive axle exits and just pull the axle out with some type of support bearing that I be able to press off or remove, and that it doesn't require the transmission and or transfer case removed just to change that bearing. Is this true? (providing the transfer unit fluid isn't nasty and magnet isn't a porcupine)

Hi! Make sure it’s not a wheel bearing. With all 4 wheels off the ground the transfer case does make a humming noise which is normal.
