Thanks. We have a 2004 Sienna with 170K miles. We had a couple of check engine lights come one about 10 years ago. I have a friend who taught engine repair. He didn't even check the codes. He replaced the hoses related to the emission system and told me to come back if that did not fix it. The lights went away and we have not had one since. He said hoses on 2000 era Toyotas were notorious for rotting. The sensors are apparently great. We took our van to a major dealer for a recall. They replaced the part and told us the engine and transmission pan gaskets were leaking and they wanted to repair them...around $800. The van was kept on concrete and I had not seen a drop. I declined. They were insistent that it was needed. That was around 10 years ago and I still have not seen a drop on the concrete. You can imagine how much I trust them now.

What info after the 6 minute mark still applies to 2004 - 2006 Sienna’s, the radiator issue? Is the coolant plate issue and oil line (with the rubber in the middle) all 2007 - 2010 issues, non 3.3L issues? That wasn’t 100% clear to me.

Thank you so much for this video and the information you share! You saved me almost $8000. The 2009 Toyota Sienna I bought had a bad transmission. The day after I bought it, I noticed it made a scratching/scraping noise while idling down from less than 40 mph with no foot on the brake or gas. I searched Google to figure out what was wrong and came across your video. It got my Spidey senses up when you talked about the transmission noise. I called the dealer (Prime Auto, Wichita, KS - Sanjay) and he said it was probably a noise from a minor rub in the brakes and to bring it back and they would fix it. It seemed feasible until I had two reputable local mechanics drive it and they said it was a bad transmission. They said there was no way to know how long it would last before it needed a new one, but the sound was the gears grinding each other. I called the dealer and took the van back and had to politely argue with the dealer that the transmission was bad. He said I took the van to "back alley small town mechanics" who wanted to make money off of me. He also said I was paranoid repeatedly. I told him the other mechanics knew they weren't fixing but only diagnosing the car and that I had researched the issue and found the same information. After much back and forth and gaslighting, I kept pushing about returning the van. He said he could give me $4000 for the van I paid $8000 for a few days prior, since it was now a "trade-in." I was getting very frustrated and told him it either needed a new transmission now or he could take it back and give us our trade-in back. He finally said I could take it to Toyota in Wichita and have them diagnose it and go by what they said. The service advisor at Toyota started describing what the van did and I thought it was from my message. He said it came up when he put in the VIN (this info didn't come up on an AutoCheck :( ) and that the former owner had been advised it needed a new transmission. It took a few more days to get our trade back and get the title and payment through, but I am so thankful for this video. I listened to my gut and checked it out after finding this information and stood my ground! Thank you for the information and for giving me confidence in the facts!

I'm at 172,500 2014 Sienna towing pkg with a coolant leak. Good thing I watched this before I had my mechanic look at this. 1) water pump original but leaking 2) coolant plate leaking as shown 3) Coolant cover next to oil filter leaking not on this video 4) plastic thermostat tube cracked 5) leaking radiator. replaced radiator and condenser 6. timing belt looked good after 80k. Mechanic did not want to replace oil seals on crank / cam. Did get new coil packs and spark plugs. New pcv. I had to talk to him for awhile to get him tuned in on issues with this motor. Thanks so much for this video. I'm so happy you took the time to make this.

Great and very informative, even for the owners. My wife calls ours a “Tank”. Because the beast is unstoppable in the winter on proper winter tires. As a ten year owner myself of 2008 AWD I can tell you the following: the 3.5 is pretty awesome and super powerful-ours tows 14” enclosed trailer with ease. Pop up behind it doesn’t even gets noticed. I changed a water pump myself one afternoon at 145,000km and it’s not hard at all. I changed all spark plugs preventatively with recommended platinum tipped and won’t have to worry about them for the rest of its life. I changed to an updated trans oil cooler lines that are all metal because our van tows a lot. I replaced the rubber elbow on the upper oil line to an updated part but sadly I didn’t go for an all solid metal tube at a time. Our van doesn’t leak a drop of oil from anywhere, period. Not even from trans or the tiniest transfer box ever, that it has for the rear prop shaft. I fixed/rebuild a squeaking alternator and let me tell you, those suckers are NOT easy to remove from engine-you will be draining the coolant and dropping the radiator slightly. It’s that bad. And that’s about it really. One other thing is a steering rack-not sure if mine was replaced before but the current one has been leaking from pass side outer seal into the rubber boot. I treated the oil with rubber rejuvenation fluid and it’s been unchanged for the last 7 years now. I am of the same opinion that’s if it’s too much work and the part is expensive, let it work for now and let it develop. Oh yes and last but not least, are those stupid tensioner rollers. They absolutely WILL drive you insane with noise and even OEM Toyota part will star squeaking eventually but usually only when it’s cold out. You can only change two of them because the actual tensioner roller is slightly different and isn’t sold separately like the other position #2 rollers.

As an owner of a 2007 Sienna with 190,000 miles you were right on with the issues affecting the Sienna. My biggest one is the alternator. I wished you made this video before I had this issue. I replaced the water pump, belt tensioner, two pulleys, crankshaft pulley, and power steering pump and it ended up being a bad alternator!!! It was a big headache but I can't be mad because this van will last a long time and I should be good for another 100,000 miles as I try to hit my goal of 300,000 miles. I will replace my radiator this spring to avoid any transmission problems.

I'm avoiding ALL THESE PROBLEMS! I still drive my perfect 2002 Sienna XLE. Simplicity and engineering perfection! Cheap repairs and simple electronics. Not a problem in its 170,400 miles. Only two items on the whole car not working: one dashboard light on the left side and the power driver's side mirror. That's it! Paint is perfect. Leather is great. Power doors work like new. The timing belt changed at 85k miles. This model was from 1998 to 2003.

That generation of Sienna had a huge issue with oil consumption! It sounds like you got a good one, though, as some forum comments indicate they had resolved the issue by 2001. I had a 1998 that threw blue smoke and ate oil like a monster. I really loved it otherwise, though, and wish I could find one like yours because these vans were smaller and had such a nice, heavy build quality.

Bless you brother! Your expert rundown is awesome and oh so valuable to those able to receive it. Wish that there was such a report for every car I have owned - even better is text report one could stick in their glove box for review. BTW, as to the alternator issue, serpentine belts are SO much better than the old v belts but one change that had to be made to go to them was to the alternator. Engine rotation speed goes up and down each cylinder firing. The alternator is a flywheel and "fights" that. Many older mechanics remember the vibration of V belts due to this. Newer alternators have a rubber shock absorber coupler that solves that. Apparently that coupler can go bad and you get belt chirping (and faster wear on the belt).

I bought an 05 Sienna last August with 193,000 miles, one owner, for $5,500. I probably wouldn't have purchased it with that many miles however the guy had all maintenance done at Toyota Dealerships & the Car Fax showed everything from timely oil changes to a radiator replacement; records since day one. No leaks, no problems. The van just turned over 200,000. I pull a small/lightweight tear drop trailer with the Sienna so I want to keep her going for a long time. First owner had the timing belt changed at 96,000 so it's my turn now to replace it again. This video made me realize that I need to do the complete 'package' i.e. timing belt, drive belts, water pump & cam & crank seals at the same time. My other car is an 08 Prius; I love them both! My husband just picked up an 07 Toyota Yaris for $1,000 to do the running around for his business. The engine & tranny are in excellent condition with 153,000 miles. Sadly the young teen girl who owned it put a dent in so many places on the body. He'll be fixing the cosmetic issues in time but for now he loves the excellent gas mileage! The information you share has really been a blessing to our Toyota loving family! Thank you!

Had a 2005 Sienna. It had 230K miles December 2020 and engine was pristine. Did synthetic Mobil One Oil changes every 5K. By then I had to replace a cracked thermostat cover (black plastic), the shifter cable, alternator, ac compressor (my mechanic friend, I do not do AC) and starter motor. My mechanic friend did 2 timing belts and I did spark plugs twice. But it ran like new. The transmission another conversation. Sadly I never heard of transmission flushes and by the time had the dealer do the 1st one at 126k miles damage had already occurred. If my son had not totaled it in a crash I was looking at a new transmission. Great vehicle and yes I would have put a brand new transmission in it if it had not been totaled.

Many thanks for your video AMD. I have an 05 with 79k miles and aside from fluid/filter changes, I have replaced (DIY) some very common issues with these vans simply due to age, not mileage, including (1) Sliding door hinges on both sides. When the door starts to sag due to worn hinges, the motor has to work extra hard and eventually the cables snap. Change the hinges once the sliding problem begins and the motors/cables are saved. (2) Sliding door lock motor actuators on both sides. Use OEM only. The aftermarket ones will not last. (3) Spark plugs on cylinders 2, 4, and 6. Got a misfire on 4 and replaced the 3 easy plugs. I'll tackle cylinders 1, 3, and 5 soon and per your advice, will replace those ignition coils at the same time. (4) Replaced the radiator/transmission cooler and hoses per your advice. I had no leaks, but combined the job with a full transmission fluid flush. (5) Front brake rotors and pads. These vans are heavy and the brakes barely adequate. Some people swap in the front calipers and rotors from 2011+ models (direct drop in if you have 17" wheels) for more bite. The 2011+ calipers are dual piston, the pads larger, and the rotors are 1" larger too. (6) AC compressor and condenser due to age. Compressor seized. (7) Timing belt, drive belts, and water pump due to age. Paid the dealer to do this. (8) Inner/outer tie rods on both sides. Boot broke and grease spilled out. No problems with the steering rack (yet). For any prospective buyers, know that these are older vehicles and work needs to be done. You have to expect this with any older vehicle. But if you take care of the van, it'll treat you right in return.

Outstanding video, thank you! We purchased a new 2005 Sienna back in the day and it served us well for 10 years and nearly 200k miles. Only issues we ever had were the radiator at ~150k (easy diy fix) and what turned out to be a bad computer that was draining the battery (relatively $$ troubleshooting by a trusted mechanic and not diy). Overall a great purchase though. Considering similar circa Siennas for some of the kids now that they are starting to drive and really appreciate all the information, although after watching some of the 4-Runner videos am thing that might be a better option.

@Mr.Technical77
@Mr.Technical77 3 жыл бұрын
So you get a new one every year? If I understood that correctly of course you wouldn’t have any problems. You don’t own them long enough to experience problems or to begin pouring resources into maintenance. I worry when people talk about the Siennas describing them as highly reliable and long lasting. They can be if you know the extensive list of issues they suffer, approximately when to tackle them with preventative maintenance, and have a heathy line of disposable income. Otherwise I see just as many of these broken down or headed to the scrap yard at -140,000 as I see running around at 280,000. It’s the 280,000+ vehicles we always hear about though, and among those, they either did the work themselves, or paid dearly to get it that far. To most people looking for a reliable previously owned minivan they’ll hear about these and think they are it. Those are the ones towed off to salvage as fairly high maintenance and repairs begin to exceed the value of the vehicle to them right away as it becomes evident the previous owner kicked those cans down the road for the next person at the most critical time in the vehicles life. There are a lot of people a setback like that would ruin for a while. I was excited to own one myself. I’m used to getting 300,000-350,000 on truly reliable, low maintenance or easy to work on, long lasting cars. I thought it would be nice to have a van capable of reaching that range. Now I’m not so sure it’s worth it to get some of them that far even with me doing the work. I couldn’t imagine if I also had to pay $100 an hour on top.

Hi AMD, it's me again. I just want to ask you a couple of question regarding my 2008 Sienna (I purchased it on late 2007). You mentioned about two common problems regarding my Sienna, the: 1. Oil Cooler Line. Last night, I spent so much time looking for it, and even removed the underneath plastic cover, but did not find it at all. So I took it to Toyota dealer this morning (without the cover), and they told me that my engine does not have it. The mechanic knows exactly what I was talking about, he crawled underneath my van in front of me, and confirmed that my 3.5 engine does not have that type of Oil Cooler line. Any thing I should do/replace? 2. Regarding the VVTI oil feed line. Does my engine has that? Or my engine has the "improved" metal line already and I don't have to worry about it anymore? THANK YOU for your continuous response and VIDEO UPLOADS. We have 5 Toyota vehicles and only one Honda. All your videos are not just full of information but also very helpful to me as a DIY mechanic.

I think it's funny how you are being kind by saying they're actually good vans, but here's 19 minutes worth of problems on just the engines and transmissions LOL. The Siennas just don't seem like a good Toyota to buy, after watching several of your videos about them. I've been trying to decide between a first gen Sequoia and a Sienna of any year just for more room inside to go camping and sleep inside, and for better gas mileage. But, I hate having a car that keeps needing to go to the shop, or when they do it's really expensive, and these just seem to be one of those. So, I think I'll eat the higher gas costs and go with the Sequoia and get real part-time 4WD, too, instead of the AWD. I really, really appreciate your very detailed videos.

I believe the 3.3 is better than the 3.5 even though I havent owned a 3.5 so i may not be the best to ask about that but I can say that with 310K the van uses maybe 1 quart of oil every 5K

TO "THE CAR CARE NUT": You wrote (in a comment below): "I would replace the timing belt at around 90k miles. I would replace the water pump, drive belts cam and crank seals at the same time as you'll save on labor this way." I don't own a Sienna yet, but I am wanting one and doing some research now. MY QUESTION: What would a comprehensive service like you recommend above cost? (rough total, including mechanic labor and parts). I have no idea, and just want an idea of what doing all that at once might add to my initial cost of the used vehicle (say a 2006 to 2008 model). Most of the used Siennas I have seen in my target price range have 180K or more miles, so I expect they will need the Timing Belt or chain replaced. But I would like a rough idea of how much I would have to pay to have your recommended repairs (all of the above you recommended) done by someone (parts + labor = Total). Just so I can budget prior to purchase of a high mileage van. Thanks for the helpful video and your answers below (I read them all, and took notes, prior to asking this question).

Hi! Your 2004-2006 will have a timing belt 2007 and up has a chain. On the chain ones you don’t have to do anything. The timing it’s hard to put an exact figure because of parts prices but it’s a 6 hour job for everything. Labor rate per hour for dealerships varies by area in Chicago it’s around 140-150 per hour. Figure another 400-500 in original parts at full price. Many variables that would change the price dramatically. Original vs aftermarket parts. Original parts with discounts….etc

So glad to find you. My 300,000Km (186,411 mile) 2004 Sienna LE 8 seat minivan purchase in 2003, yearly rust proofed and parked only in the garage. After timing belt, water pump major tune up (everything was working fine) it started to leak coolant and the air condition was not cold. Toyota dealer said it was the thermostat so I paid for the additional repair. Now, I have been back 3 times since the repair within one and half year and the dealer had replaced the thermostat and than 3 weeks ago using silicon to seal it up and told me if it leaks again it is something in the motor that maybe warped and needs to be taken apart which is not covered by warranty and need to be sent to a 3rd party motor shop for $5,000.00 repair! Is this real? My van was running perfectly fine before the major tune up/timing belt & water pump replacement and after the last silicon repair it starts to leak again especially when I use the air conditioning system. How common is the rattlening noise for the 2007-2010 sienna? is the fail due to lack of engine oil changes? Thanks
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 4 жыл бұрын
It’s somewhat common. Cars that are maintained usually have a lesser chance of getting this issue. Some of them have the oil cooler line let go then they run dry on oil but recover once you fill them but now the gears are damaged and they stay rattling.

Today, I dropped off my 2006 Sienna XLE at the Toyota Dealership Service Center to have the Timing Belt and Water Pump replaced. I followed your advise and told the service advisor that I want the Cam and Crank Seals to be replaced as well. When they added the cost of Cam and Crank Seals to the Timing Belt and Water Pump job, it did not raise the total cost of the job that much. The Toyota Dealership Service Center seems to have competitive prices when compared to the two independent shops I have been working with. My principal independent mechanic said that sometimes it's good to take your Toyota into the Dealership Service Center, every now and then, to see what they have to say about your vehicle.

What about hidden air leaks, hesitation and reduced fuel economy issues with no Check engine lights in the 2006 Sienna Fwd 3.3L V6? Will the spark plug/knocksensor replacement group recommended in video be a common fix? Sorry for lack of details, trying to keep this short and simple. I've tried replacing both heater o2 sensors, replaced MAF, all replacement parts Denso name brand, spray wd40 for air leaks, checked intake hose for cracks, and every simple remedy I could find online, no result except a more declining fuel economy everytime I've replaced a part and after completing the idle relearning procedure. It seems to be a common issue according to the forums I see online, yet, the solution remains unclear.

Hi! I would look for fuel economy elsewhere like brakes and tires

@@TheCarCareNut thank you for the prompter than expected response...its already been done! Tires new and alignment been done, brakes new and not too tight. The 02 sensors read too lean in the live data. But not been able to trace where the leak may be at passed the mass air flow sensor. My conclusion is that's there is no leak unless your Forementioned replacement parts relating to the manifold gaskets could be an internal air leak somewhere. Transmission has already been serviced btw. Unless a speed sensor may be faulty...then I'm not sure how complicated that may be to deal with as there is not mutch info online or if it's related. Even your video on the live data didn't bring any light to this. Another idea is maybe the knock sensors need to be changed?

So how much did the fuel economy drop? And was there a certain point that it did?

@@TheCarCareNut it's seemingly intermittent, even after when the 100 mile drive cycle is complete. However, 2 major highlights when I paid careful attention yesterday. The drop in the fuel level is the most noticeable when, 1. Every time I start the car. 2. Driving very long distances at above 50mph. Seems to match the fuel economy of going inner city miles except you can notice the gas needle dropping slowly at a steady rate. (I've already changed out the mass air flow sensor and installed a Denso to remedy this but no effect.) Btw, I've looked everywhere and the average price for the knock sensors are about 300 usd each for the OEM brand. There's no way I can pull 600 dollars plus tax and I'm terrified of getting the aftermarket versions. I guess Denso doesn't make these or the PCV valve for Toyota.... were you recommending to replace just the wiring Harness with the connectors (50 USD each) to them only or is it necessary to replace the complete assembly? The parts I'm referencing are found on partsgeek website.

Honestly the knock sensors will have zero effect on gas mileage in your case. I wouldn’t worry about them unless you have codes.

I have a 2005 AWD sienna, that is making a vibration noise, what sounds like right in the middle of the van, how often does the drive shaft go bad in these, or what sort of mount might be holding it. You mention that rubber bushing, but I swear the noise is coming right from middle of van. It's at 196K. Appreciate your feedback, thanks.

My 07 Sienna has 189K miles on it now. I bought it with 68K. One common engine issue not mentioned here that I've had and read about others having online is the piston slap when warming up especially on cold days. IN the winter the thing will clank and slap until the engine warms up most of the way. This is with full synthetic oil changes since I've owned it. IN the warm summer it only does it for maybe 30 seconds to a minuet or so after you turn it on and not so pronounced. It's never gotten any better or any worse so I just keep driving it that way. When I first got it though I was pretty irritated after everyone was bragging to me to get a Toyota and how they're so high quality. I'm thinking this clanky POS is quality? My previous GM car with a 3800 series 2 was a much smoother engine. Much better in the winter cold by a long shot. The transmission has also been a bit quirky on this van since I've owned it. When slowing down to turn or otherwise around 10-15MPH and then adding power back in it's like the transmission doesn't know what gear to shift into. I quickly learned to just ease it forward carefully so it can gently find and shift into a gear. Otherwise too much power and it would slam hard into a gear because it's like it couldn't make up it's mind. It's done this since I've owned it. Another Transmission quirk is in cold weather when the vehicle's not warmed up all the way it has trouble downshifting back into 1st. Sometimes I come to a brakes struggling complete stop while it's still in 2nd and it takes it a moment to drop back into 1st. Once it's warmed up this issue goes away. Warm months it's a non-issue. It's been doing these things since I've owned for the last 10 years and hasn't changed or broken so hey can't complain even though it's always been a bit disconcerting. Thing shifts fine otherwise. Done Shocks, Struts, Strut mounts, Tires, Water pump, AC Compressor, lines, and condenser, Tie Rods, Sway bar links, thermostat, new radiator, CV axle and boots, brakes, tires, small normal maintenance items. My previous 1996 Oldsmobile 88 LSS 3800 series 2 was a more cost effective reliable car than the Sienna, but overall the Sienna's not too bad. I do think Toyota is pretty overrated after my experience with the Sienna though that's for sure!
