If you inspect them properly you could buy a decent one with mileage but be aware that buying one that’s neglected and has a lot of issues for cheap is not a good idea especially if you’re going to use it daily and to make a living

I've never owned a minivan, I prefer SUV's, but I need more cargo space and better gas mileage. I know very little about cars in general , have a trusted, reliable mechanic. Dealerships see a female sucker when looking at me. With this video I feel more confident on what to look for and what questions to ask. You are awesome! We purchased my wife a 2013 XLE Sienna new in 2013, we purchased the extended warranty from Toyota 125K or 8yrs. Right out of the dealer they had to do an alignment I guess it was not done property at factory. 1st year they replace right front strut that was leaking. All this under warranty. The only problems that I would have been responsible if I did not had the extended warranty would have been, At 60K they replaced the radio unit. Bluetooth stop working$1400 second issue would have been the water pump at 70k it would have cost me $1100 however my Toyota warranty covered the repairs. My van has 81k now and my warranty is still good till 08/2021. ill have it inspected in the spring by a mechanic to see if there are any leaks or broken parts before my warranty expires. The only money we have spent out of pocket is for tires, brakes and oil changes, air filters and gas of course! I asked my wife is she wanted the 2021 Sienna and she said NO! Got rid of it in 2015 mainly because i wanted the new tech they had on the 2015, back up cam, blind spot monitors, cross traffic alert, Bluetooth etc. other than that my 2008 was great, no problems. drove smooth, oh and got better mpgs than the new 2015. Still have my 2015, no problems with it.

Amazing video!!!!!! I have a 2011 Sienna LE 8pass V6 FWD. it’s been the best car we ever owned! I change the oil every 4-5k miles with Castrol titanium 20k oil and an OEM filter. We bought it at 68k miles and we are now at 115k. Just installed a new set of AT tires and the current todo list is: coolant flush(no leaks), brake flush and rear rotors and pads, spark plugs, Eng and Cab air filters, and I’d like to do the fuel filter too. We did upgrade the radio to an Alpine unit with the kit to keep the steering wheel controls and the backup cam. It has CarPlay and can be updated as needed easily. This van has been a great blessing for us with three kids 7- newborn and l love the V6 in it. It runs great with Chevron Premium and driving it as nicely as possible and not breaking the speed limit I can get 22.7 avg MPG all week long. (Empty/no passengers) driving to work. 45 min one way with traffic. Awesome job on this video and we are looking forward to watch more and share with our other Toyota friends and family! Thank you for sharing! They’re really good vans and when taken care of like your van they last for a very long time. One note regarding the fuel filter, your van doesn’t have a serviceable oil filter. Just a sock type filter at the fuel pump. So that’s one less thing on your to do list. I don’t believe this guy . I’ve had a 2005, 2015. Never had any troubles as this guy speaks of. At a 100,000 miles I had the water pump changed and pulley system checked. No issues otherwise. This guy hates Toyota as far as I can tell. I know to many Sienna owners and we’ve never encountered these issues.🤔🤨

My wife is a prosecutor and she deals with crime all day every day. Personally, I've been fortunate enough to never experience crime myself. It's funny that you say that he hates Toyota since he's dedicated his life to fixing only Toyotas. As he says, if you're buying one and it doesn't have these issues, and you need a minivan, it's a great one to buy. I'm about to buy one so this video was invaluable to me.

I did a LOT of research before settling on my 2013 Sienna Limited w/43,450 miles on it, corporate owned (not personal), excellent condition, all maintenance records available for review. One thing I kept seeing in my search was that for every 2013-2016 or 2018-2020 pre-owned I saw for sale, there would be about TEN 2017 models. They far outnumbered the other model years. That to me was a huge red flag. I did some research and saw that the '17 seems to have more complaints than the others - and your video here confirmed that. All model years have some complaints, of course - but the '17 Sienna seems to really have problems - at least in what I could see in my research. Traded in my '04 Sienna XLE Limited for the 2013 Sienna Limited, and so far, very happy with it.

Toyota make each model for 4 years. I always try to buy last of the four year cycle. I avoid the first year of the 4 years like the plague. I bought the 2016 which was the last year for that model. The 2017 that you mentioned was the first year of that model. They seem to work out all of the new problems during the first 2 years.

Currently on my second sienna. First was a 2004 that i owned for ten years (since new) and it still been daily used by a friend without having to repair its engine or transmission ( recurring nuances were front brake/rotors and tires). Currently own a 2015 (bought used in March 2019 with 35k miles). It has been rock solid reliable to this day. Recurring nuance is front brakes(bent rotors). Recently installed "heavy duty" slotted and vented rotors to see if lifespan increases (they have been lasting less than a year). We all love this van at home.

I am the original owner 2012 XLE has 270,000 miles. Lots of tires, brakes, oil changes and one alternator. That’s it! I did add a Curt towing hitch and factory trailer wire harness bc U-Haul version was replaced over and over. They just splice and dice a cheap Chinese version. I’ve towed small ski boat, 14 foot cargo trailer and a kayak on a jet ski trailer many times. The only service I’m afraid to do is transmission fluid. I hear bad things happen after trans fluid change. This mini van is better than my Land Cruiser. Thanks for another great video. Subscribe people ! Over

I'm encouraged to see this. We bought a 2012 LE 3.5L back in 2021 with about 70k miles on it. We have almost 100k miles now with no engine issues. We had to replace the AC compressor. But other than that no major work. I am starting to do oil changes more frequently. Hoping this van will last at least another 100k miles!!

Very good description of these vehicles. Just want to add some insight. I believe to think that the oil leak behind engine is not from the timing cover, it's from the vvt oil hose crush washer, we replace those all the time for that issue. The head gasket leak is generally not significant enough that requires repair. We see these all the time driving for years with the leak. There is usually just a little crusty pink stuff right under the cylinder 3. These vans eat tires! The reason I believe is because of the control arm bushings. The ac compressor flow sensor is a common issue. We have a hack repair for those. Had seen a couple of rear expansion valve issues. Ac doesn't get so cold or takes very long to get cold. We find the condensers are clogged. Th axles click prematurely. The driver's temperature blend door stops moving. The sprocket teeth from the blend door mechanism and motor separate.

I had that problem with my 2008 XLE had to replace tires right at 29K. Didn’t have that problem with my 2015. Also the 08’s came with Dunlops that may have been part of the problem. My 2015 came with Michellins.

I'm the third owner of our 2011 sienna xle. It is honestly the best vehicle I've owned. We can have 7 adults and be comfortable. The leg room is incredible, the comfort is insane. Everyone loves it and all of our friends ask to borrow it or all want to ride with us when we are going to Vegas. Its an incredible vehicle. Ill probably never not own a Toyota sienna. If you're thinking about getting a sienna, do it. We will be lifting it slightly with the traxda leveling kit and slightly bigger tires when our warranty expires so we dont scrap the bottom when we do camping excursions.

still recall changing the door actuator that kicks off the sliding door mechanism on my 2006 Sienna. Was a very cheap part and thank goodness few people did step by step how to take off the inner door panels and do the repair. Afterwards, it worked GREAT

I’m looking to buy a used Sienna to replace my 01 Windstar van purchased in 02 for the family. It’s been my primary for my work for 10+ yrs. But between the repaired oil leaks that come back, gauges that no longer work, rattles and such that are too expensive to repair, and the cheap plastic latches and trim that are broken, it’s getting to be time to play taps over it (340,000 miles). I love the functional utility of a minivan, the upright seating and the space. @@flipptripz1067 no, but found leaking AC lines and leaking rear evaporator. Bad diagnosis and some irresponsible mechanics lead to two new compressors and replacement of both front and back evaporators. Ending costing $4000 for AC repair!

I’m the owner of the 2005 Toyota Sienna with 298K miles on the odometer and still runs strong without major issues. This vehicle never been towed any it the most comfortable vehicle for long trips. I prefer driving this minivan over the modern SUVs and Sedans . This minivan has been one of the the most reliable automobiles I’ve owned and I have owned BMW, Mercury, Mazda, Nissan, Infiniti, Honda but nothing can last like Toyota and Lexus. More importantly, Toyota service is substantially less than other brands. Toyota engine also can take some abuse or negligence. I have just changed the oil and found out the last time I changed it was in June of 2019 and was 16700 miles ago, ouch! Dealer charged me $37 for oil/filter change + tires rotation + comprehensive vehicle inspection. Toyota dealer is in another class above, it’s airy, modern and efficient.

Sister bought at 2011 Sienna 4 cylinder new from dealer. I drove it frequently (when I lived with her) and noticed no major lack of power. She drove it with her 6 kids... a lot of weight, up mountains, cross country, never complained. She recently gifted me the van. Again, I don't notice a lack of power... and I've owned some pretty fast cars/vehicles (V8 Mustangs, motorcycles, etc).

I know you see these issues on cars at a daily basis as you clearly work at toyota but i bet the % of problems vs. Number of sienna on the road is not as bad or as common.

I have a 2015 Sienna XLE, and your presentation gave me a whole lot of information on what to watch out for down the road on this van. It seems the quality of Toyotas have deteriorated now that they are built in the US, unlike those previous models made in Japan. I say this because I am an original owner of a 1993 Toyota Previa LE van built in Japan with currently 270,000 miles on it. I have not had as much problems like the newer models you mentioned. Ours is a 2014 SE with 125,000 miles and I have replaced the back rotors. Other than new tires every two or three years there have been zero issues. The driver side door did stick once but i wiped the bottom track with a rag and used a little lubricant and all has been well since. We’ve hauled 3 grandkids from toddlers into their teens and it has been worth every penny. The v-6 is a strong engine and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. After the first year I have been using Amsoil 0W20 which I change once a year. In short we love this van and hope to keep it for many more years.

Bought a 2011 Sienna V6 XLE brand new right during the time when Japan had the nuclear reactor disaster and all Japanese made cars had practically stopped shipping. Luckily my engine came with the new 10k miles oil change interval and super excited about it. I change oil once a year (Toyota Dealership) as I don’t drive much(6k/year). I feel blessed to not have faced any issues mentioned in this video during my 10 years of ownership. Coming up on 60k miles on ODO and plan to get the recommended fluid changes. Fingers crossed that my car lasts a really really long time all hassle free.

Thanks for the great info. At first I was thinking maybe it's not a good idea to even look for a Sienna van . I found a 2015 AWD in decent shape with 95K. The carfax record looked pretty good, service wise. I took it to an independent shop for a buyers inspection, and mentioned the items you had said to look for. They knew about most of them, checked it out and said it was in very good condition, they couldn't find any of those issues as well as the other usual stuff they look for. I purchased it yesterday, hope it will live up to the reliability of my 1994 AWD Toyota Previa, which just had the head gasket fail at 320K, the first engine problem it had .

As soon as the run flats wear out I replace them with regular tires and keep one of the run flats purchase an extra rim, they make a great spare. If you don't stow the driver side rear seat the spare will fit with some persuasion

We bought in 2013 new sienna , so far we did 170.000 miles almost 0 issues, we have replaced nothing except brake pads. our AC is getting weaker, but still cooling. There is noise in steering column I think like something is a little bit loose when you turn the steering wheel. but we seriously did not change anything there are no leaks. I have never been in service at Toyota. I change oil myself every 10,000 miles never replace transmission fluid. I did my spark plugs by myself. Amazing vehicle will buy another Toyota we also have Camry from 2007 around 150 thousand miles, we replace alternator and radiator that’s it. Toyotas are the best.

The dealers hourly rate is so expensive many of us like myself cannot afford to use them, especially since they hire a bunch of young inexperienced techs and don't pay them much, yet the consumers pay the standard rate for a top flight tech which are rare!

I recently had a reputable neighborhood shop do an oil change on it and after I got it back I noticed a ticking noise at idle after it warmed up. The noise was louder down by the passenger wheel well than anywhere else. It was not constant but would cycle a bit. I was concerned enough about the noise that I took it to the dealership for evaluation. The dealer did an inspection of water pump, etc and couldn’t find exactly where it was coming from. They told me next step would be to inspect valve area for $800, but weren’t certain if that would be the issue. I told them let’s start with a fresh oil change / filter and see if that helps. They did the change and the ticking is significantly reduced. They said that the prior oil change was at the correct level with correct filter, so they were uncertain why it would’ve made the noise louder. The tech did say that they found the slightest bit of metal glitter in the old oil. From my limited research on the issue it seems like there are number of folks who notice the ticking on the 3.5 V6. I’m just paranoid now (especially with the glitter in the oil comment) that something is amiss in this engine and I’m wondering if it’s best to keep investing in it or cut and run and look for another van before something major happens to this one. Hi paul. So the glitter in the oil is a concern. But I wonder if the oil that used by that shop could have an issue. Do your next oil change much earlier to see if the glitter is gone. These engines can take a beating but you’d want that debris to be out

I recently purchased a 2015 limited with AWD and 117,000 miles that checks out great based on your video, but I noticed a very brief low moan sound when gentle acceleration is applied. All the driveline fluids were replaced, I hoped it might eliminate the issue. Very brief noise at 1750 rpm hard to tell where it’s coming from, not loud, I think it’s under the hood. Hard to tell where it’s coming from though. How concerned should I be? I paid for a 3 year warranty and plan to take it in, but in your experience what things should they be looking at?

@@SpencerDT6 I'm no mechanic but I also have a 2015 Sienna. I had a similar situation with our Sienna. I also couldn't determine where the noise was originating from. So, I eventually took it to a local mechanic (NOT the Toyota dealership). Thankfully, the sound turned out to be just a heat shield that only vibrated (aka: makes noise) at certain 'lower levels of overall engine vibration'. The solution was to 'super tighten' the bolts that held it. We could've removed the heat shield, but that option seemed like it would cause other eventual problems. And... it still makes a small amount of noise... but since it's not a true mechanical issue, we decided to just ignore it. LOL BTW, to be clear, I'm not saying your problem is the same as mine... I just wanted you to know that it COULD be something as simple as a heat shield vibration issue (and hopefully it is something as 'non-critical' as this). Good luck. 👍

@@andyroid5028 , the dealer never figured it out so I took matters in my own hands. It ended up being the first mounting bracket for the exhaust by the O2 sensor. The noise went away when I removed the bracket myself. I’ll have to come up with something creative to create another bracket for the exhaust, but for now it feels really sturdy without it. Seems like a bit of a design flaw. I imagine this is a common problem.

Great video! Very informative. I own a 2015 Sienna with 165k on it, only major issue was a couole months ago I had to replace the radiator, water pump, after the radiator "blew up" probably due to that water pump issue you described. I just bought a used 2011 Sienna with 117k on it as a second car because my sons "stole" my old cars a 2007 Camry with 155k on it and a 2000 Ford Explorer with 187k (that doesn't burn or leak any oil, believe it or not). I'm cheap, like most Dads, and I do a lot of DIY repairs. I appreaciate your informed opinions and especially your "shout out" to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You are absolutely right on the lack of power of the 2.7L. I owned one after searching all over LA dealerships and found one with 4-cyl and the color I wanted in 2011. I didn't want the 3.5L because of the difficulty of rear spark plugs and water pump replacement. I got rid of mine in 2015 because it was struggling to climb up the hill on the way to Vegas. Great under powered Sienna. No oil consumption at all.

Last year in September my wife and I bought a 2014 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD with 113,500 miles on for our family. It does have a salvage title. The van has been great except its not uncommon for the battery to be dead when we go to start it.... It's especially frustrating when we're running late for church and we get to the van and it won't start. It's usually completely dead but occasionally the power doors will open and the interior lights will come on but it won't have enough battery power to start the van. Sometimes we find that my daughter has left an interior light on but Sometimes like this morning there's no lights on and it was dead. We usually only use it 2 or 3 times a week since my wife is a stay at home mom of 4! Ihad 1 private mechanic look at it it. He couldn't find anything wrong but changed the battery last December....

I think I would still rather have the 4-cylinder than the V6 even if it doesn't provide any better fuel economy. My reasoning for this is I work on my own vehicles and I appreciate how the inline 4 layout is not only simpler than the V6 but also gives you a lot of space to get in there and work on it. V6 engines in a front-wheel drive can be a nightmare to work on, so much so that I'd be willing to give up some performance not to have the V6.

I wish I had seen this one before having the water pump replaced. Stopped the coolant leak for a couple months, now back. 2014 XLE 224000+ (our 4th Sienna over the years). Been worried that it was trans b/c under even mild load (uphill trying to maintain constant highway speed) getting a vibration (like an out of round tire). In the past, I’ve found that an OoR tire vibration will come and go with certain speed ranges. This vibration only leaves when I lift the accelerator. Still not convinced that it might be transmission related. Your thoughts? Thank you for all your comprehensive detailed videos. Hi James, I think there is a difference between anecdotal experience and statistical experience. Your experience is based on 5 vans. CCN’s experience is based on hundreds/thousands of vans day in and day out. Which one is statistically significant? I think failure points should be analyzed based on statistically significant data. Parts Manufacturers usually already have an estimated failure rate in components that’s expected. It may not always be 100% due to variations in production batches.

Hello James. I agree with Soccer Dad. I would add that what CCN is really saying is NOT "these vans break a lot". He is saying instead something like "when these great vans DO have problems (some of which might be quite rare) these are the problems that I see most often". Remember, CCN doesn't see the vans that have no issue, he exclusively deals with the smaller subset that do have issues. That is my explanation of what I think Soccer Dad is saying. My 2004 sienna is at 260,000 and the transmission "died" a week ago. Turns out it needed a two dollar shift knob linkage bushing. Took me four hours to get the damn thing in, but it is running like a top again. I have a 2013 sienna parked in my yard because I expect my 2004 to die eventually. Picked that one up because I had the chance to buy it at wholesale price. I expect that van to be great also EXCEPT I am annoyed that replacing the transmission fluid is much harder (no filler tube). I think that CCN is right AND I also think that most sienna owners might never see most of the issues he mentioned. Both those things can be true.

2017 Limited 2WD owner here and after 150,000 miles we've had zero of the issues mentioned. Just regular maintenance & wear items. That and heavy abuse from the kids in the back seats. I know the 2017 model gets a lot of hate here and elsewhere but you have to remember it's still a Toyota. It's still much better than buying a Caravan and for us it's so far much more reliable than the Odyssey it replaced.

I appreciate this video. There is a lot of great information in here for Sienna van owners for sure. But there is also a lot of description of “super common” problems, and a viewer may come away from watching this feeling like their Sienna is actually a ticking time bomb that is inevitably going to have many major and very expensive repairs. I’m not doubting that these problems are real, and obviously the presenter is extremely knowledgeable and experienced. But even if he sees these problems in the shop constantly, I am wondering what percentage of all the Siennas in these model years that really is? Like if he said “over 50% of all these vehicles eventually develop those problems”, well then, yeah, that’s definitely “super common”, and would be bad news. Even 20% would be bad. But if it was more like 5 or 10%, then it would still be a concern but you would also know you had good odds that you could drive your vehicle for many years without having to deal with one of these big $$$ repairs. Anyway, I think it’s a good video but I think it could benefit from some data about just how common all these very common problems are.

WATER PUMP-just a note, if your water pump goes, remember the engine does not have to be taken out to replace the water pump, my shop jacked up the engine on the passenger side just enough, after removing the pass. side motor mount bolt. no problem getting the extra long bolt taken out and replaced on the new water pump. If you don't jack it up you WILL NOT be able to get the long bolt out.

I bought my wife a 2011 Sienna XLE V6 brand new. Within a few days, the windshield cracked and the dealer replaced it. A couple of years later, the sliding door on the passenger side wouldn't close. Toyota told us to eat the repair. We were able to close it and a few years later, they sent out a mechanical notice but for some reason, it didn't cover the entire door so they didn't fix it. Again we just left the door closed. About a year ago, they sent another technical notice and that covered the complete door. They replaced both sliding door mechanisms and now it works. Aside from the sliding doors, this has been one of the best cars we have ever owned. The engine is nothing short of spectacular. My wife is a bit of a speed demon and I have offered to buy her a new car but she loves the engine power so much that she flat out refuses to let me trade it in. I bought a used certified 2017 Limited Highlander because it has the same engine. But I saw your video on Highlander and I am so happy I have a certified used one because the engine and powertrain have a lot of time and miles to be covered under warranty. All of the car makers are using these automatic transmission with more than 5 or 6 speed and engines with turbos that make me wonder if we are trading reliability for enhanced performance at a higher cost on the backend of long time ownership. Great video and thanks for alerting all of us Toyota owners to the issues that might await us in our future.

I believe in Toyota and I think although the reliability cannot be the same as before because of how complicated cars are these days but I believe Toyota is still ahead when compared to others. I still see their approach of delayed technology because they are more interested in getting things tested right and made well than rushing things out the door just to be the first one with the technology. We don’t have turbo engines yet in mainstream Toyota’s but I wouldn’t doubt that it will someday but again delayed because they want to make sure it’s as reliable as a Toyota owner would expect

@@beronib888 Just under 100k miles. We just had the oil cooler line brust open and it happened while my wife was on a trip. Very expensive to have it fixed but I thought the mechanic took advantage of her. Once the lines were replaced with metal oil cooler lines, it was back to normal and runs like a top. My daughter as a 17 Sienna with all wheel drive and I don't think those have the power that the FWD models have. You can't go wrong with a Toyota.

We have a 2015 we got at 89K now has 123K so far bone dry no leaks no problems, very nice van. I did not want a 2017+ with that 8 speed dual clutch transmission no thanks. 6 speeds is plenty and a tried and true torque converter.

I own a 2017. Purchased with 29k miles on it in late 2020. It now has 57k on it. No problems yet. The transmission is a little jerky around low speed of 10-15 mph. I feel the economy mode creates indecision on the gearing. When placed in ECT mode it drives at is best. Keeping your car clean and garage kept I think makes a difference with some of those rust issues described.

That could be cause by a sticking oil control valve. If it happens again replace the oil control valve of the affected bank and side and you should be good. Very diy especially if it’s bank 2

Looking for your thoughts The Car Care Nut. Someone recommended you and your channel to me, and said you may even comment. 2015 Toyota Sienna XLE FWD 104,999 miles. We've owned it since 2018. Change the oil typically approx every 5K miles. Last week while idling in a parking lot warning lights suddenly lit up, and beeping started. I turned the car off. When I tried to restart it about a minute later, it wouldn't start, only heard a clunk. But the battery operated items came back online. Engine light Steering wheel w/ exclamation light Messge alternating between: "Check Electric Power Steering System" "Check Charging System" Towed to my shop and they said the engine is seized. The oil was full. They can't tell me why it seized. They said they removed the drive belt to try to hand crank it and it won't budge. I was quoted just under $8K to replace with an engine with almost the exact same mileage, alignment, replace coolant and oil, and starter bc they said the starter is smoking now from trying to start a seized engine and it's cheaper to replace when the engine already out. If you see this, have time, and feel like it... I'd love your take and/or recommendations. Thank you!!

@@piggy310Ask what it cost for that AC repair and you will score it as a major issue. Replacement of evaporator cores -most Siennas have two - requires enormous disassembly of the interior. Compressor and condenser are also expensive, as is the labor.

2020 XLE Premium, as for the sliding power doors... Turn off power doors by pushing the 'manual power door shut off'. If you do not use the power doors, turn them off. This will help the doors last. You can just manually open and close these doors. Thank me years from now.

Didn’t think it was possible to make a Chrysler minivan sound reliable, but, here you go. The CCN does tell us to junk the run-flat tires. Should also tell or show how to bypass the power doors that break, and abandon the line to the rear window washer. You will survive without it.

Greatly appreciate the things to watch for for these years. Looking at a 2020 model soon and now have a couple of things to check out. While I'm reasonably sure the vehicle was maintained pretty well, it's still good to check for some of the more obvious issues and be aware of the noises that could come up. I'm sure I'll hear about seat rattling sooner rather than later, but we'll just deal with whatever we have to there.

Good informative video I must say but doesnot leak oil or coolant leak as mentioned in video. Only issue i would say is power sliding door. Don't get put off Siennas. Great vehicles. Mine has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever had, and I've had it for over 6 years. And as far as your MD analogy goes we use those numbers all the time to change our way of life such as heart attack being the leading cause of death. Derp

@@KarlsCracklingCottonMouth Bro, I was never disagreeing with the particular observations this tech has made. These are probably the failure trends, and he would know better than all of us. I am saying something different: I am reminding someone who was scared out of buying a Sienna that 100% of Siennas that are being fixed are broken. In other words, if you watch a 33 minute video about Sienna failures, you might come away thinking that the ownership experience necessarily involves nasty failures. It doesn't.
