I still have a 2003 Cavalier. I bought it back in 12th grade with 36,000 miles (3 years old at the time). Now it has 80,000 (almost 9 years later) and it still runs like a champ. It's the base model, so no power locks or anything like that. Still in very good condition. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across country. Great, rock solid, reliable car.

I drive a 2014 chrysler 200, piece of crap was having too many problems so I got an 04 sunfire with a 5 speed to do my commute instead, same thing as this car. I absolutely love the hell out of it. 197,000 miles on it, paint looks like hell from being out in the sun, I've put a ricer blast pipe on it, tinted the fog lights yellow and tinted the tail lights in VHT and keep up on the maintenance and the thing just keeps on going and it's hilarious the looks you get in it. Can't beat the gas mileage either, I average about 35-40 on the highway and about 25 around town. Gotta love a J body

My 03 (145k miles) just cost me $1600. because of a stretched timing chain and bent valve which meant new head but otherwise has been a great cheap car. Oh yeah the dash plastic next to the radio,gauge cluster and right next to the windshield are a bit brittle. Not like glass but like easily shattered fine china. Be very careful if yours is not broken. GM used cheap non UV resistant plastic and the OEM supply of warehouse overstock is gone. Junkyard replacement parts only and most of those are broken or will when you try to take it off. Not kidding.

Bought a 2003 Cavalier in 04. I was everything but nice to that car. Never broke. When I got rid of it it had over 160K miles. For value best car I ever owned which includes Corvette, Camaro, Silverado, etc. Has a lot of low end torque and a blast to drive.

We have a Cavalier at work, and right now I'm surprised it's better equipped than this one, power windows (barely work) and power-remote door locks. The plastic at the end of the dash is completely destroyed though, but in all honesty, it's not a horrible car.

$1600. Stretched not broken timing chain bent valve and new head 03 Cavalier would beg to differ. It died. Badly. Other wise it is a great car....minus the dash plastic that shatters if you touch it....and the recalls for defects (not dash plastic) ...and cheap non aimable plastic headlights that go foggy and have to be buffed clear and sealed about every 2 years.....and the speakers will be shot by now so replace those ....and the gauge cluster tends to just slowly fail bulbs, gauges, fading, and sticking.....peeling clear coat ..........no yeah great car.

@@gooberclese I bought a 2005 Cavalier for $1400 CDN. The owner bought it in 2019 for his daughter but she bought another Cavlier. So it sat in a Driveway for 8 months. Oil was brand new, Breaks were new. Clear coat was flaking off, i had to change the Spark plugs eventually on it, Wipers were slightly rusted so those had to go. But the clear coat is a common issue with GM in the early 2000's. it's a solid car if you give it enough TLC.

actually the ecotec 2.2 is a very reliable engine. i have a 2004 and it has 241,000 miles and it has never had an issue. its a 5 speed and it still has a lot of power in all the gears. lexus is the worst of the worst. very unreliable and it cost more for repairs compared to a chevy. the 2004 is a very good reliable car as long as you keep up on the maintenance. i was the first owner of my cavalier and have stayed on the maintenance and that is why i have never had an issue

I have 2004 2 door Cavalier Z type with a stick shift 2.2 L, 215 000 K/M (not sure what that is in miles). This was the last year they made the Cavalier before the dreaded Cobalt. I know Cavaliers can sometimes get a bad rap, but this car has been good to me. The key is be on top of your maintenance, don't extend your oil changes even if your using full synthetic, do regular maintenance checks, tune ups, etc. . I use regular 10 W 30 with a pint of Lucas oil stabilizer every time i do a change, makes the engine purr like a kitten, well sort of, the 2.2 isen t exactly the quietest or most refined engine, but she does have some power, especially since it's the manual and not the slushbox. The car always starts, no matter how cold or hot it is, parts are cheap and easy to get, and i actually like the styling. Mine has the body kit on it made in 20003 and 2004 only. It didn t cost me much to buy, and dosen' t cost me much to insure. I can leave the doors unlocked, no one will mess with it, and if it gets dinged bah no big deal, tons of donor cars at the wreckers. This is a great low cost car if you need something cheap and reliable, just make sure you maintain it properly and oh, don't get the automatic slushbox, it kills any pleasure of driving, or most of it at least.

oh one more thing i forgot to mention, if you are buying a Cavalier, make sure it's a 2003 or a 2004. Chevy reinforced the chassis and other bits and pieces and it makes a HUGE difference in how the cars drives, and also how sturdy it is. I have driven older generations, 2002 and below, and gone back to mine and the difference is like night and day.

nothing is wrong really, but 2003 and 2004 they reinforced the chassis which makes a big difference in how it drives. they also did a ferw other updates seeing as it was the end for the Cavalier and was up against alot of newer cars at that time, so GM did a refresh for the last 2 years, 2003 and 2004. Makes a big difference.

I have a 2000 Chevy Cavalier that I bought at an auction for pretty cheap. Had a lot of issues when I got it but have been working on it as a project. I am surprised as to how good this car drives. Vehicle has about 70000 miles on it which is also good too. It is the CNG variant though so I am not too sure how that works. Previous owner disabled it so I dont know if it works. Only issue I have is there is a clunk going into drive or reverse that I hear sometimes.

My parents bought my first car, and sadly it is on its way to the point of no return. The point where it costs too much to keep it running in comparison to its value. I have been eyeing these cars not because they are the most attractive or fastest, but because they have a low resale value. I just recently got a job and will be working hard to save my money to buy one. It will feel great to know the hard work I had to put in to be able to afford my own car. =) They are very much like hotel rooms in the sense they are designed to please as many people as possible and be semi bland. I am not saying this is bad, I like the car, while not my first choice with an unlimited budget, they are decent. =)

05 Cavalier 4 door with 178,xxx miles. With power windows and locks, automatic, cruise control,CD and same dash board. Giving me an emission problem as it stalls when I fill up. AC cold and the heat is excellent at night. Reliable yes. Will keep until it dies. Only thing major done to it were struts. I do have a model with no ABS.

I bought a 2003 chev cavalier, manual transmission. Had it for 3 years, sold it only because it didn't have a/c and summers were getting unbearable. Only problem I ever had with it was one of the plastic vents on the dash just fell apart one day when I was adjusting it, had it fixed at dealer under warranty. I found the Getrag manual transmission rather sticky, but boy did that Ecotec engine go. First car I ever owned where I knew that I had the power on tap to pass on the highway. Exceeded my expectations for a budget automobile.

(Im ashamed to admit Ive been a lazy idiot who hasnt changed the oil in it in a year or two... If you have this car like I do, and plan on getting a better looking one, don't sell the cavalier, they will give you shit for it, especially the dealer, just keep it as a beater until it dies, insurance is cheap. I have the cavalier with 68k miles, if I ever get a better car, I'd keep this cavalier as a beater, so you don't put too many miles of your newer car.

we had this same exact model for 8 years and only have 61k miles on it and its already falling apart. windows motors are broken, transmission wont shift right... steering wheel locks once in a while. but if you are looking for a cheap car just to get you around town this car is perfect for you.

I helped a friend buy a 04 cavalier before. It is an AT with 145k miles on her but runs strong. Compared to my 01 civic coupe, cavalier feels a little more powerful but front heavy.35 hwy compared to civic 44 hwy. All in all it is a good cheap transportation. My impression with GM vehicles is that they must screw up some minor stuff (if not major) some place, like the cup holder location and the instrument cluster in cavalier, no trunk key hole in 06 impala, no trans drain plug and so much more!

Got an 03 cavalier... 140,000...no leaks nada...39 mpg... Tossed a deer this year.. a headlight and hood and its still going strong... Replace the chain tensioner $50 and it'll go forever.

I owned 5 of these cars over the years. All them had over 30000 k on them before I had problems. In my veiw. They were a good cars. As long as you took care of them. Did your basic mainance on them. They were grate , affordable, and also good fuel effective cars. They cost as much as 15 or 10 k. They were good start up cars for someone buying thier first new car or a recent graduate first car. Yes the 2.8 or 2.0 motors were known to throw the timing chain or belt. But, that was due to poor maintance and oil changes. But any car you buy. Will fail do to you not doing your basic maintance on it. It's going to be a nightmare or give you issues. And you can't blame a car for breaking down. If it's own refuessed to maintain it . Most people who owned these cars and had issues. Just got in and drive them. Not doing oil changes or the suggested maintance in the owners book. Other then that they were sport looking and confertable,easy to drive. And those who hate this car. They just picky and want to to get noticed driving a forin junk import car then buying American made.

@ProtegeTuype it might look bad, but they are reliable. Ours has 289,000 miles on the clock and runs perfect and we did nothing to the engine

The ECOTEC motor has a fatal flaw in it's first model engine code (L61). It's called GM bulletin "ECOTEC EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION". Due to the design of the pcv valve, if you change the oil it's better to be half quart low than over. The slightest little bit over and it will start burning oil through the pcv valve and/or lower intake. No valve to replace, cam cover and lower intake manifold needs to be replaced to solve. Only smokes on wot over 4500 rpms and it's just a puff but it will empty the oil pan in a week. And stay away from the automatic transmission. The manual getrag (pronounced "ge-trog") is very dependable and ten times the proformance.

we bought a 04 cacalier 5spd 2.4 ecotech enginge. $1000 80k miles on it at the junkyard dont know why it was in there cause it had a veterans foundation sticker on it... No problems at all the previous owner ahd reciepts from a new exhaust, rocker panel replacement, new battery,new oil, all within the past 1k to 2k miles.. Best damn thing youd ever find at a junkyard we just had to find 2 front tires and we gotta buy a window washer tank thats all and besides a dent in the trunk and front bumper nothins wrong with it...

This car is awesome, that 2.2 engine its powerfull but silence, to much espace inside of the car and very economic with the gas consume. The best in this car is the suspensión, so soft in the freeway

I have an '04 Cavalier LS. I like it, and it can be a lot of fun to drive. Only thing that I don't like is the interior. It's held up well, but it seems so... stock.

If your going to get a Cavalier this is the one to get. An 04 or 05 model with NO options that way you minimize things that break on the interior. The Ecotec and 4 speed auto are surprisingly tough and reliable, get 35 and 36 highway with good power. Get a base model you can put the rims and stuff on it later :]

all the haters..... wow its not a damn sports car! its a car to take you from point A to point B and return, My 2000 cavalier LS in 2017 has 200,657 miles on it. Starts up every morning regardless of the weather in NYS. the best part? Tomorrow it will start just fine...
