Shannon is always a good, neutral commentator. However, the guy with her, doesn't know his beam from his bars and messed those up on a regular basis. Shannon just let it go though, and didn't draw attention to it, as many would. I like that she trusts the sport to judge fairly.

There were some excellent beam workers at this Olympics. I love the variety of skills on all the apparatuses. It feels like all of these routines are much more unique than the routines we see these days. Everyone does the same skills now.

@Nunovurbznzsodontask the problem with a d score unlimited is the risk on athletes and, since there are no compulsories, the dreadful techniques, awful execution you see today. Just compare the qualities of vaults, and simple skills like full spins on beam and back handsprings with those in the 90s.

Carly Patterson won fair and square, but I might argue that Anna Pavlova deserved the silver medal more than Khorkina. Khorkina was extremely sloppy on all apparatus (except bars), barely stuck any landings and rushed to salute or danced out of her tumblings /dismounts to cover up the wobbles , and her leaps and spins were nowhere near perfect, had wobbles after wobbles on beam … but they talked about the remedy for 2000..

I’ve felt this same way as I was on the end of the diving board diving for the State Diving qualification against 3 others. I knew I had it in the bag and felt kind of cocky as I had a smile on my face before even doing my last dive. I still made it to State, but State was a whole different ball game. So much talent!! I was just glad to have made it and not place last.

The single biggest stopping block for her honestly was bars- here and In Beijing. Unfortunately you have to be strong in all four events to medal in the AA at the Olympics. I think if she had been, even with the vault she would have gotten bronze.

It amazes me that Svetlana was still competing here as her first international medal came in 1994 and here she is competing at the Olympics 10 years later for the third time! She’s truly an icon but after these games she retired. I’m just amazed she could still do gymnastics with her growth into womanhood as we all know the sport generally favors smaller and younger athletes

We think Elfi did an excellent job supporting the Americans even though she was Canadian. Unlike Ato Boldon, if we remember correctly, who always supported the other sprinters especially from the islands. If you are commenting for an American audience, then you should support them. Whatever country you are a commentator for, you need to at least make positive comments for that country's athletes. We did feel bad when Elfi was replaced for Nastia, but it seems to make sense. @@josephqualtier961 You're right. My bad, however, I would argue she also didn't always finish it before she passed through horizontal either. I know technically there is no further deduction specifically for that, but there is a huge difference in quality of a routine as a whole when someone is 20-30* past where everyone else's pirouettes finish. I would argue that something like the deductions for lack of swingful execution, insufficient dynamics, incorrect body alignment, or lack of rhythm could also apply. Seriously, it's like putting Onodi's release skills up against every other top competitor and calling it all equal.

The equipment now known as uneven bars for women evolved from the men’s parallel bars. Til the 1960s or so, women used the same apparatus as is known as pbars (parallel bars) for men, just set at different heights.... eventually as the uneven bars distance grew, they were manufactured differently. Calling them uneven parallel bars is just as correct as uneven bars, or just bars for short.

Well, that’s a matter of opinion! She was excellent at this sport, but so are many others, and there was no sportsmanship in her at all when she stated that the only reason she came in 2nd, not 1st, was because the judges were ‘biased against her because she wasn’t American’ - that’s absurd! Of course, I want everyone to achieve their dreams, but not when they get all snotty and diva like about it! However, I get sick of the Americans always thinking they are the best, and are the team to be beaten - well, if that’s the case, why were they beaten?! 🤷‍♀️

She was accomplished, yes. Admired? Only for her skills. For her character? Definitely not, especially by most other coaches and athletes. She was arrogant and nasty to the point a couple of times other coaches had to tell her to knock off being disrespectful to their athletes. In this competition she said something absolutely out of line to Carly in Russian- not keeping in mind that Carly’s coach is Russian! He called her out on that in a big way. Some of the most truly admired gymnasts of all time, from Nadia to Simone, Daniella to Aliya, and more were both incredible athletes and great sportsmen. Yes, there’s the occasional moment of anger or words spoken in haste but that’ every person alive. Svetlana went out of her way many times to be rude and caustic towards fellow competitors.

@@saragrant9749 I completely agree! And I also have a bit of a vendetta towards Simone Biles - she’s often spoken about as ‘the best gymnast ever’, but that’s rubbish IMO! Yes - she’s a brilliant gymnast, but so are many, many others, and I think it’s disrespectful to so many of the other superb gymnasts to be saying that about Biles! She also got my goat when I saw an interview with her where she stated she ‘kept entering competitions, and kept winning’! Whether that’s the case or not, get over yourself luv! I’ve seen her performing live, and let me tell you, she wasn’t great on the beam or floor! Many, many gymnasts are just as good as she is, and many have surpassed her! I get fed up of all the hype about her!

"She wants to know exactly what is needed." One of two of the most ridiculous remarks a commentator could ever make. That would give one the impression that, rather than the competitor doing the best that she can in difficulty and quality to assure a victory, she can "adjust" the quantity of her skills so she wouldn't have to make as much of an effort to win. It also assumes that the competitor knows without any doubt whatsoever that she WILL NOT make a single, solitary mistake should she downgrade the difficulty factor of her routine. The other of the ridiculous marks, common to Tim Daggett, is, "She just can't do better than that," relegating the competitor to having reached the top level of her performance and is incapable of doing more or better.

Ok, that’s fine. No competition that included the Soviets should be counted either as they tainted EVERY result by having the judges in their control. It’s been proven- and a known fact- for years that it was that way. Also, when an athlete or country is not allowed to compete because of rules violations the same should hold true- the competition should not be considered and the winner dismissed. Talk about selfish, arrogant and meaningless thoughts! You clearly have an inferiority complex and just have to speak down about others to make yourself feel better. @@wj3781 all most people remember Svetlana for is her diva behavior, her absolute lack of respect for anyone in the sport- including her own teammates in some cases. The Russian everyone still talks about is Aliya, for her performances and her gracious and respectful attitude towards the sport and those who competed against her. Carly is an Olympic AA champion, a member of the most exclusive club in the sport itself. Svetlana is NOT. And I prefer gymnasts who can HIT clean routines consistently. Dance is individual, unique and interpretive for each gymnast. Your gymnasts may be graceful, but can’t hit consistently clean routines for the life of them. There’s a reason you haven’t won a world or Olympic floor title in 24 years- and it’s called execution.

I think Anna Pavlova and Daniela Sofronie should have medaled. They both performed with poise and easy, fluid movements. They had the best choreographed routines. The scoring was very questionable. Carly Patterson's 9.7 range scores on beam and floor were too high. Her dismount on beam was spectacular but the routine in its entirety felt choppy. On floor, her dance was laughable and she took a step on practically every tumbling run. Svetlana Khorkina was stellar on vault and sophisticated on floor, but over scored on bars. Her beam and floor scores were adequate but warranted more in view of the ludicrously high scores given to Patterson.

Don’t understand how you think Carly’s beam was ‘choppy’ ? It was really well executed, fluid and the score was well deserved. Her vault was a bit meh but she hit her bars as she needed to. While her floor might seem robotic, a lot of people are the same. The tumbling was outstanding and the score was well deserved also. She had the meet of her life. If I were questioning anyone’s placing it would be Khorkina. Her vault was messy (her legs..) her bars was meh, her beam was extremely lacklustre and had many faults but her floor was well executed and had a 9.9 SV.

I agree with Anna Pavola over Zhang Nan, but Carly’s scores were fair compared to Svetlana’s. Carly did not wobble once in her beam routine and my god, that dismount. And her dancing in floor is honestly really consistent with the jazz dancing of the time. Just because it was jazz and not ballet/lyrical doesn’t mean it wasn’t 1. Executed well and 2. Idiomatic with the music. Say what you want about Carly, but she really had the beam of her life and good consistency everywhere else.

Because he has respect for the competitors' fathers and their family names, that's why!!!! Not like the dumb, arrogant noodnicks from Britain and ours from the States who perpetually butcher names with no regard for those who participate. If you listen to East European commentators, NOT ONE of them effs up the pronunciations of Western names. They take the time to learn the pronunciations before the competitions as a show of their intelligence and respect for the competitors!!! For example, if you listen to Christine Still from Britain, the announcer in the arena likely pronounces Mustafina's name properly in whatever venue she competes, but Still constantly effs it up. Her name is properly pronounced MusTAHfeena, with the accent on the second syllable. Still can't seem to get that through her fat head no matter how many times she hears it pronounced correctly and continues to say MustaFEEna with the accent on the 3rd syllable. Dimwit. Same with Daggett and Trautweg from NBC, that is until Nastia started to work with them. Now Daggett is correct half the time. Same with Khorkina's family name. She appeared once on camera and made it a point to mention how her name is pronounced. I saw how she sternly corrected everyone, and I didn't blame her. And commentators still butcher it. Frankly that kind of disrespect, laziness, arrogance and blatant stupidity doesn't speak much about the intelligence of Western commentators, or people who criticize others for making it a point to be correct.

It’s easy to demean the judges- people who trained for decades and have worked thousands of gymnastics competitions to be able to be considered for the Olympics- when you’ve never accomplished a single memorable thing in your entire life. The reason her score was what is was had to do with at least one element- poorly executed- not being credited and thus lowering her start value. After her vault Carly performed absolutely brilliantly and had a 10 start value on all other events, something Anna did not have (her bars were substantially too weak). I suggest you go and judge a few gymnastics competitions yourself before making yourself look the fool you clearly are.
