2004 Jeep Wrangler Hard to Start / No Start with Code P0340 Cam Sensor and Synchronizer adjustment

This jeep was very hard to start and the scan tool readings were showing out-of-sync cam/crank readings.

I had to change the Cam Position Sensor as well but it broke again about a month later . The Cam shaft synchronizer had a lot of slop ( wore out > 430,000KMS ) and it will just chew up the insides if the CPS . I had to replace the synchronizer and put in a new sensor . You will usually hear a tapping noise when the synchronizer starts wearing out . That noise is the synchronizer hitting the sensor .

I had this same issue on my 4.0, 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. From what I discovered-- (going off of memory)--- That same code will trip, whether it's the cam shaft or crank shaft sensor. I think the code is just telling you that the two sensors are not in sync; So it will trip that code if either of them goes bad. So it can fool you sometimes, making you think it's the cam sensor, when really it's the crank sensor. I ended up needing both to get rid of an intermittent issue; and I even had to do the procedure to walk that cam sensor another tooth forward (just like you would do a distributor)--- the guys before me were Mexicans, and apparently they didn't know what they were doing; I was surprised it ran as good as it did, with the timing being off by a tooth. I found that this is actually the only issue these engines really have. The 4.0 is a solid engine.

OK, I'm getting this code now. Background, it was hard to start, taking taking 2, 3 then 4 turns of the key to get it to start. Intermittent P301 code. Then I had to change the flywheel & clutch, pulled into the shop got those changed. Went to go home. It wouldn't start at all, popped P340 right away. Changed both cam/crank sensors still won't start at all. Any ideas?

Take the cam sensor off, crank the engine, and ensure the cam housing shaft rotates. If it does, grab it with your fingers, spin it back and forth, and make sure it is solid. Clear the codes and see what comes back. If it is the P340 then the sensor may be bad.

@@c938695 I have not found a fix for the intermittent P301 code. But I did correct the starting issue. Amazon sent me the WRONG flywheel in the correct package. Yes I ordered the correct flywheel and according to the box I was sent the correct one. But it turns out it was for a different year jeep. It had to many timing marks on it. The one for the 06 has 4 timing marks. Since the one they sent me had more, the sensors couldn't read set the correct timing.
