In 1998 I passed my bus and coach PSV licence test. The bus company I worked for at the time had these huge Scania coaches that were used as ordinary buses. The first journey was so intimidating as the bus was as big as a house. It was a semi automatic which meant it had a button instead of a clutch. You could be in say, second gear. Then pre-select third gear, press the floor button and the gear would engage. Took a bit of getting used to but was quite easy after only a short while. The air brakes are a whole different ball game to regular ones. Featherlight pressure is required till you get used to it. I didn't know you could handbrake skid a bus/coach till I tried it one night in the bus park back at the depot. Luckily, no one saw me do it, lol.....

The Unimog actually is a quite nimble and fast Vehicle if you want it to be that way. It still got a decent power to weight ratio, can climb crazy stuff and is versatile like no other. There is a reason why in Germany the "Mog" is so widley used in public service. Be it either at a communal, military or emergency services level. Oh and that vehicle loves to eat offroad for breakfast. Ther is almost no series vehicle which is more offroad capable and versatile than the mog.

@Tedward @2:00 you know why the gear lever looks like that in a Mercedes truck??? If not, I'll tell you why and at the same time an anecdote from my life as a German truck driver who had to learn the hard (expensive) way.... but Mercedes too!!! In the middle of the 90's Mercedes came up with the idea of testing the "Tiptronic" and what was it tested in??? In trucks... during this time a lot of gear sticks (almost too many) were demolished, broken, bent, torn out, etc... because the gear stick still looked like a gear stick and not like this "plastic lever with lots of buttons" and we truck drivers were used to change the "range" with a "firm" blow to the left or right!!!!! The "Tiptronic lever" looked the same but could only be moved back and forth. Often enough this stick, which cost over $1000 (without installation), broke off. I've seen trucks myself where the driver stuck a screwdriver into the mechanics for forward/back and the original stick was on the center console because of the cables for splitting and changing the range because they didn't have the money to repair it. That became too expensive for Mercedes in the long run so they designed this abomination... but it worked! ;)) another tip: you can “pre-select” the gears then you have about 15 seconds. to use the clutch But I have a question? Why do US regulated vehicles have 2 buttons as a handbrake We have a "combination lever" that has exactly the same functions and also functions as an "emergency brake"!
