I'm no mechanic, but I AM an engineer and I do all of my own vehicle maintenance and repairs. I like to watch repair videos before I take on a job I've never done before to get familiar with the tools and procedures needed. This is a very well done video, Dan. The information is clear, concise and correct. You speak well and there is no superfluous information thrown in that is just not needed. I don't comment on videos often but I do like to let others know when they do a good job. Well done!

Thank you for posting this video. I'm doing both CV axles on my Tundra, and your video is a huge help! Here's a tip for your watchers. If you jack up the side of the truck you're working on, and leave the other side on the ground, you won't lose any oil from the differential.

I agree with Patrick blurton I don’t comment on many videos myself but also like to give credit where it is due. It was very informative as to the information we were needing. Nothing extra and plain and simple. Great video. I have a12’ and they jumped the axle nut size up to 39mm. I already had a 35 and 36 from previous chevrolets and fords so was hoping to not have to buy one but sure enough I did. Anyways thank you again.

Noooo!! The edit at 8:28, exactly what I’m trying to figure out. So you didn’t roll with the snap ring? If so, how do you get the shaft into the CV assembly with that on there?
@SharpieEasternn3 жыл бұрын
6:24 It appears that the snap ring sits inside the the inner CV shaft and is not removable from the bearing side. So you expand the snap ring to release the bearing from the shaft, but since the snap ring is attached to the bearing, when you go to reinstall it the snap ring will ride over the cutout and snap back into place.

@DantheFixitMan8 жыл бұрын
No, it actually stays in the CV Joint and snaps back onto the shaft when you slide it in. I'm sorry if I didn't explain that in more detail in the video. You can see the snap ring inside the joint at 7:05. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

Any tips on putting the lower ball joint bolts back on?..... I tried one time when I installed a spacer lift and no matter how much I jack up the lower ball joint it was hard to get it close for the bolt to reach the spindle all it was doing was tilting the truck more to the side.

Nice video Dan, thanks for posting. I'm doing my boots in the next week or so, it's been really helpful to see you do it. Quick question... will a 35mm socket work on the axle nut (I have to buy a socket)? I measured the axle nut at about 1.380" which equates to 35.05mm. Was the 36mm socket a tad loose? Also, did you use a 6 or 12 point?
@DantheFixitMan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Great question... the 36mm was indeed a little loose, but still worked fine. I have since learned on a forum on Expedition Portal that a 35mm will work as well, and according to that website is the correct size. I used a 12 point because that's what I already had in my toolbox, but it sounds like the 6 point socket would work too. Also, please note that it isn't necessary to remove the brake caliper or rotor to change the axles like I did in my video. I had seen a youtube video and they had taken off the brakes too, so I didn't really think about it until after it was done... Best of luck to you! -Dan the Fix it Man

I'm adding and confirming for others. I just removed my CV to replace the faulty needle bearing and the axel nut is 35 mm and a 6 point. 36 was too loose for my 2002 Toyota Tundra. Hope this helps.

Hello Dan, great video. Can you tell me, is it the same process to replace the outer boot as the inner? Remove the old boot, disengage the snap ring, etc.? I have an 01 and figure if I go to the work to get the axle out I will go ahead and replace both boots. thanks!
@DantheFixitMan7 жыл бұрын
It should be the same, but I haven't done that one yet. It has to be removable for servicing etc, but I am not sure if it is the exact same type of snap ring. And that's a great idea to do them both at the same time since you will have the axle out anyway. Thanks for watching! Take care, Dan

Hi Dan, did you use that whole packet of grease on the ball bearings? Also, since you had the axle off, did you consider changing the outer boot as well?
@DantheFixitMan8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes, I used the whole packet of grease on that joint. And no, I didn't change the outer boot that time. But good point, that would have been a good time to do it, since I already had the axle out of the truck. I guess since it wasn't bad, I didn't bother changing it. I think the only reason the inside boot tore is because of the lift on the truck. Tundrasolutions.com has many write ups about the inside boots leaking or tearing after lifting the truck, even with the differential drop kit. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

DO NOT USE A PRY BAR to pop the axle out, I have done countless tundras, the differential tube that the axle “snaps” into is made of plastic and cracks way to easily causing all the diff fluid to leak out

Russell, About to do my boots on my Tundie, what other way do you recommend to pop the axle out of the differential? Thanks, Ryan
@peirs1317 жыл бұрын
GOPROSANTACRUZ Easiest way I’ve found so far, is to use a short prybar or screwdriver and apply pressure to the back of the axle( as in the video), while applying pressure with the prybar give it a good couple hit with a air hammer, if you have one. Pops out smooth with out damaging the differential tube assembly. If you don’t have a air hammer, get a second set of hands to apply pressure with the pry bar and use a sturdy flathead and hammer to the back of the axle. Good luck 👌
