It also depends on how much money you want to spend. For gears you'll spend $150-$200 for parts + installation which could double the price easily depending on the shop rate. If you can do mods yourself or have a friend to help outyou will save a lot of money.

Gears are personal preference. I wouldn't say its for people who are just starting, you can do it but I'd do after doing some things. I would start with an intake, exhaust and tune. Then go from there. It all depends on what you plan on doing with your car. Is it a daily driven car that you might take to the track once or twice a month? Do you drive a lot of miles or is it a weekend car? 3.73's is a smaller jump from the stock and would help acceleration but not hurt gas as much.

Try 3.90 gears instead of 4.10. You will still have good street manners, good highway manners and your engine won't be so high up in the rpm's when going on long drives.

That's funny the 05-09 mustang did 0-60 in 5 sec when it was stock. So with the bolt on power package and the acceleration modifications he was only able to do what the car does stock. New driver, I think so.

+hebeb394 "American Muscle" I think they'd have to be made in America first, to be considered "American Muscle". Camaro is built in Canada. Charger an Challenger are built in Canada, and motors shipped from Mexico. Plus, if they did expand, like all major corporations, I think that the one on one attention AM customers get would degrade. Just like our over-crowded school systems. However, I do agree that Camaro and Challenger owners should be able to have the same relationship that Mustang and F-150's owners get with AM. But. Mustangs are bread out of pride from Detroit, and not test tube babies from a corporate "let's turn a profit" environments.

+James Hill Well I guess mustang owners just need something to compensate for their motors up to 2011. AM is great no doubt and the site is awesome for your average wrencher. I more or less liked the build up videos and the organization of their video implementations. I've owned plenty of Mustangs but let's face it I like going faster than what the older ones had to offer so you either ls swap them, empty your bank account trying to make them faster or just switch to gm. Btw last time I checked, not every part Ford uses on all their models are made in the US so that's somewhat hypocritical. Have a nice day.

I'd go with the 4.10's. Some people say that's too high, but Cobras have a 6th gear. So that should help keep the little bit of MPG you have already. lol

One of the issues I have with 4.10 gears in the new mustangs (I have a '05 GT) is that with the wide ratio transmission first gear is so low...I also have 4.10's in my '65 Hipo Mustang and with the close ratio toploader 4 speed it is much better.....(fyi Close ratios have a higher first gear then the next 3 gears are more closely spaced,which make for a quicker 1/4 mile time and better in the twisties too)..I wish Ford would have put a close ratio tranny as an option at least.

first gear really is short with the 4:10's. you'll need the LSD to lock those back wheels or you're not going to go anywhere. I've got both and they are great.

Believe just the ‘05-‘06 (GT) manuals came with 3:55s. The rest of ‘05-‘09s were 3:31. However, 3:55 was an option for manual GT cars ‘07-‘09. I’d love 4:10s, but my car is a daily highway runner, so I went with with the 3:73s.....also went ahead and had the Trac-Loc rebuilt while putting the new gears in the rear.

My '07 GT also came with stock 3:31's(auto trans.) JUST had the 3:73's put in, nice difference also seems like the acceleration is smoother.

Frank- Yes, those gears and a good dyno tune make a noticeable difference. I too noticed (after the tune) that the shifts were super smooth too. Glad it worked out for you and you’re happy with the results.

One question, (don't know if you know)..interested in either a muffler delete or shorty headers, have outlaw dynaflows on it now, just want that more throated sound without having to go long pipes and mess with the catalytic converter. @Frank Yes, you probably want to avoid the long tubes. On the 3 valves engines in these cars it’s a major job and Not something that you’re going to do in an afternoon in your driveway. It’s about day and half to two days labor in a shop. Also, had O2 sensor issues. Finally, my professional tune person had to go in and delay the sensors to keep it from throwing a code. Then God forbid your tranny has to be worked on or replaced you’re going to have a fortune in labor again just to drop the tranny. I ran long tubes with flow master 40s. Got a lot of compliments on how the car sounded.....especially under throttle. I know H pipes are suppose to give more of a traditional muscle car sound. The X pipes are suppose to be more of a rasp. I’ve heard those running off road (catless) X-pipes...they’re loud and raspy, but I do Not care for that sound. You can get catted x & h pipes. That will sound better than the stock system. You could always add dumpouts to your exhaust. Make it good and loud when you want it to. The dumps can also though can affect ground clearance some. I would avoid going full open exhaust as that can be damaging over time. Some back pressure is good as well as can help you get max power out of your set up. I really like how my set up. Only other considerations were possibly dumps and cams. Honestly, Not being built up, the cams would take away from low end performance.....but would make it sound beautiful. Though that would be a chunk of change for sound w/o really gaining performance. Maybe some shorties w/ a good H pipe and high flow mufflers. I wanted mine to be 1) sound good 2) be loud .....but Not annoying as all get out in the cabin. I hope this helps.

The 05-09 gt's are great cars though. full bolt on puts you over 300 to the wheels, which is fine for a street car. you could also through a blower on it and smoke a cobra. lol

i know this is an old post but if someone is going through this decision now Department of Boost will sell you a complete 122 GT500 blower kit for 4500 for the 3v. Most guys with a street tune are making 425whp which is right near 500 crank hp.
