This guy is really great! His videos give a lot of necessary specific information. I like how he mentioned the torque specs on both the fill plug and the drain plug. Also how he mentioned filling it till it dribbles out slightly WHEN IT'S COLD. No warming it up and checking the level. Some transmission require this. I was wondering about it and I already knew if I go to this guy's video he would specify. He specializes in Ford so he seems to really knows Ford's products real well. This guy produces very excellent, informative, high quality videos.

Great video, thanks! I did this fluid change yesterday. Very straightforward as you describe. Great price from Rock Auto on Mercon LV, available in 5 qt container. Bought that and 1 additional qt. from them. Specification for my 2011 is 5.3 qts, and that is pretty much what it took (when I subtract my own spillage). I purchased a hand transfer pump from Harbor Freight for the fill. I noticed however that once the splash guard is off, there is enough access from the drivers side wheel well, that I could have just used a funnel I have that has an extension tube on it (around 24" long) with a tapered tip that would fit in the fill hole. Probably would have been less messy than using the HF hand pump- I should have cut down the hoses on it, they kept curling up. Thanks again!

Hey Chris! Yeah, I'd definitely change it, whether the manual says to or not. Can't speak for Fords, but from what I've seen of other brands, the CVTs aren't as robust as a regular automatic. They need all the help they can get. In the case of the Nissan Rogue, no replacement parts are available ... so when the thing lets go, it's over $2 LARGE plus core to swap out the entire assembly.
@Chris-Fennimore6 жыл бұрын
Hey Smitty, thanks for the tip. Yeah, this CVT is an interesting annimal... it will go from 0mph to 60mph on 25% throttle, and the Tach will never move from 2k. Yet, if you floor it from 0 mph, it has pseudo shift- points built in to the solenoids, so it "feels" like a standard 6 speed auto.

There's a big difference between a conventional CVT and an eCVT as seen in the hybrids. Conventional CVTs have the whole pulley and belt setups and depending on the manufacturer may be 'ok' to just 'bad'. eCVTs have been proven reliable and rock solid as all they are is a simple planetary gearset, no clutches or gearing. Simple and reliable electric motors in addition to the engine do the work of maintaining the gearing ratio through that planetary gearset.

On another topic I have an 2008 Mariner Hybrid with 115k miles and recently it's been getting a Regen Braking error in the dash text display, along with the ABS & Wrench lights. I've driven it with this condition and it definitely changes the braking characteristics. Usually if I turn the car off, wait a minute or two and restart it the error clears itself and the brakes operate normally. I curious if you (or anyone else watching this video) has ever had this issue and what it takes to fix it. Thanks again.

Thank you for this vid, it is very helpful. I recently bought an '09 Hybrid with 22K original miles. The seller let the vehicle sit for several years due to an unsolved brake sensor issue. I've got that resolved now, but I'm wondering if I should change the tranny fluid now or is it okay to wait until 60K miles? I've put new tires on it with new air pressure sensors, and I've put a couple of tanks of gas through it since I bought it. What other fluids should be changed and maintenance done now since it sat for so long?

That's super low wow. You're probably fine to leave it for another 20k miles then change it all out and leave it for the 60k miles before changing again. Long shot but, I'm looking to buy a used 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid but already know there's an issue with the A/C and power steering. A/C I could care less about, and power steering from what I understood was fixable by swapping out a sensor. However after talking with the selling, he tells me that because it's electric there's no fluids so...you gotta change out the whole assembly? Still cheap to buy from a scrapyard but, not sure if this is right or if he's mistaken and I'm able to just swap out the sensor that seems to be an issue? Thanks! :)

The fluid specified for the Ecvt is mercon V yes, regular cvt transmissions from Ford as found in the Ford Freestyle take a CVT specific fluid whereas Mercon LV is used is most if not all of Fords new conventional 6+ speed transmissions. @@FordTechMakuloco Good to know. The reason I made that statement is because my OEM Ford dealer (Anderson Ford in Lincoln, NE told me that my eCVT Escape takes Mercon LV. After more research I see that you are correct. Scary to know a dealer told me the wrong information.

@@TheeFlyingK It would not have hurt that transmission one bit by using Mercon LV. Compare the two, all the info is online side by side. You would have never noticed a difference. Your local dealer was probably recommending what they put in those transmissions because LV is a better product. Most of the guys on the Ford Forums use Valvoline Full Synthetic Mercon LV or Amsoil Low viscosity ATF. Ford acts like they transmissions aren't even serviceable because they are "Sealed" Sealed my ass. Same with the 2015 series F150's with the automatic trans in the EcoBoost, "sealed" Which is complete garbage. As you can see in this video, they are all serviceable but Ford refuses to do the work because they claim there is no way to drain or fill them. Valvoline makes a great Mercon LV Full Synthetic or you can use the low viscosity Amsoil ATF and it will run better than the day you bought it. Ford acts like they put some special additives and magic spells in their fluid. Give me a break. This isn't a dual clutch racing Ferrari for God sakes.

Technically, Ford claims that transmission is sealed and claim there isn't even a part number or physical way to change the fluid. They are so full of crap. The CVT's from 2009-2021 all have a drain and fill. A novice person with a few simple tools can change it in 30-60 minutes with cleanup time. I used Valvoline Full Synthetic Mercon LV instead of the Motorcraft Mercon LV which is not synthetic. Your call but after talking to the folks at Amsoil, I would have used their low viscosity ATF, but the Valvoline is $5.47 a quart on Amazon. You just need a 10mm Hex socket/bit. Loosen the fill bolt first. Mine was so tight, it was put on by the Hulk I guess. Make sure you can get that off first. My car is a 2012 and I put in 5 quarts.

I changed my transmission fluid (MERCON V) on my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid at 90,800 miles, and my gas mileage appears to have decreased from 28.5 to 27.8. The transmission feels smoother, but I am puzzled by the slightly lower gas mileage. I expected an increase in mpg, not a slight decrease. Any ideas why the mpg is lower?
@ironduke6100 Жыл бұрын
It may be that the fluid was a bit low, and the new higher fluid level causes a very slight increase in the amount of parasitic drag on the moving bits inside the transmission.

That is absolutely 100% true. I am actually shocked they even serviced the transmission at all. Here in Denver, Phil Long Ford claims they cannot drain and fill my 2012 Fusion Hybrid CVT or my 2015 F150 Platinum automatic 6R80 with EcoBoost engine because they are "Sealed" for the life of the transmission! MY ASS!! That is complete garbage. They both have a drain and fill plugs. I did upgrade the transmission pan on the F150 to an aluminum pan since I tow my boat and it adds a few extra quarts, easier filter changes and better cooling. Added a larger secondary transmission cooler too. Anyways. the Fusion Hybrid uses Mercon LV and I use the Valvoline Full Synthetic Mercon LV available from Amazon for $5.47 a quart and in the F150 Platinum I use the Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. I have changed the fluid Completely twice on both of them. They will run better than when it was new and the fuel mileage has gone up on both since I moved over to Amsoil or Mobil1 engine oil and better trans fluid. Your vehicle and transmission will never know the difference between Mercon V and LV. Just compare the specs of them. Ford acts like they have some magic recipe and potions and if you don't use their fluid "which no car manufacturer makes their own fluid" that your trans will fail and leave you stranded in the middle of Kansas. Give me a break. It is 2022, not 1938 with SAE 30 in non-synchro transmission. Hell, Mercon LV would work in that too. These are ZF transmissions which are gear driven, and the same ones used in many brands like Toyota. If this was a Nissan CVT, I would just wish you luck, no matter what you do. But Amsoil makes a good NS-2 and NS-3 fluid. But they are not belt or chain driven.

I'm hoping you'll answer this comment or perhaps someone can. I have a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid but I can't seem to find anything on the internet saying what the Fluid Capacity is. I asked the Ford Dealer and they said 4.28 but that can't be right because I have put in 5 and it's still not dribbling out. The vehicle is fairly level. Maybe it's a little over 6 like this SUV in the video. It would be great if someone could answer this for me or let me know where I can find this information on the internet.

@@FordTechMakuloco I was hoping you would say something else. I must have some sort of oddball. You can have 2 Ford Fusion Hybrid both 2010 yet they will have vastly different air filters. Mine has the " Forever Air Filter". (They actually have to be replaced around 100k and it cost like around 200.00 or so. Others have the regular replaceable air filter that might cost 10 to 15 bucks. My transmission says CENMC on the bottom next to the drain plug. Both drain and fill plugs are M18 - 1.5. Both are heads Torx T55 but can easily be mistaken for hex key 10mm. Both heads easily stripped with either tool. The Ford Dealer said those plugs are obsolete and didn't offer a substitute. I replaced them with 3/8 drive heads and remove the magnets and machined them to proper length. ( .475 "). My vehicle is level and it's up on 4 ramps. (2 in the back are modified so they don't hit the frame when you drive up.) I lowered the corner (took the wheel off) and tried to get it to dribble but nothing. Not trying to argue or be a naysayer. I'm a big fan of your videos and always give a thumbs up. I'm just going to have to buy 2 more quarts today. This transmission and plugs although not identical looks very similar to the one in your Hybrid SUV video and might take the 6-7 quarts like that one does. So far 5 quarts and no dribble.
@wiliiamamey5967 Жыл бұрын
Today I still may try lowering that corner even more to see if it dribbles. I was using a bubble indicator to measure the level but depending on where I set it, it might be wrong. I figure if I can make the car obviously low in that corner and it doesn't dribble that will mean it requires more fluid. If it does dribble that means I didn't have the car level enough.
@wiliiamamey5967 Жыл бұрын
@@FordTechMakuloco I finally got it to dribble out at somewhere around 5.5 quarts. I even lowered that corner a little more to make sure it needed that amount. Perhaps it's some sort of oddball. I drove it today and it seems to be fine. I was concerned about over filling it. I didn't want to do that. I did drain it like over a couple days because I had to find a retrofit solution to the obsolete drain and fill plugs that are matching. Maybe that's why I had to fill it more. I'm also doing it in the winter with temps below freezing. Not sure if that might make a difference.

I have the owners manual for my 2012 Ford Fusion hybrid, it states 5.3 L. I drained out around 5 liters and pumped in 5 liters which is pretty much the whole bottle. But yeah like you said you filled with around 5 L so you’re good. Shouldn’t be any different for the 2010, same model and body.

Our 2006 is having the same problem. I'm still working towards the cause, but I did find both output shaft seals leaking so it may be that it is low on fluid and either causing the issue or caused damage and this is the outcome of that damage.

I'm also curious about this as well. My 2013 manual has a recommended transmission fluid change interval of 150k miles.
@JustinLaNoue6 жыл бұрын
From what I've researched the early Hybrid models used an Aisin transmission that is the same model that Toyota used in their Hybrids and the 2013+ Ford Hybrids use a Ford built and designed transmission that is very similar to the Aisin units.
@Vchat206 жыл бұрын
Yep. You're right. I was mistaken. The 2013-2017 models have the Ford built HF-35 hybrid eCVT transmissions where I think either 2017 or 2018 model years they have an updated HF-45 which is still built in-house. I was thinking they started the in-house models earlier in the Escape Hybrid's lifetime.
