You have a great informational video. The overwhelming bent for these conversions favors the lifting of the truck. Thank you for recognizing the needs of those who wish to maintain a sane center of balance for highway driving. I concur with your (and, obviously, Ford's) recognition of the superiority of coil over leaf spring suspension. Still, I remain disappointed with the move to the Super Duty axles with their metric bolt pattern and [front] unit bearing hubs. In my experience, traditional rebuildable/greaseable bearings are superior to unit type.

Thanks for this video I really appreciate it! I was looking to do just the rear axle swap from a 05+. My rear end is on its way out. It needs brakes, drums, wheel seals, etc. Swapping the axle sounds like a better option for me at this point. My truck is a 2wd, so no front axle swap is needed in this case. Does the super duty axle bolt to the stock leaf's? The brake lines and cables are the least of my concern. I just want to be sure if the super duty axle will bolt up to the stock springs in the rear lol. I'm aware that the bolt pattern is different, and I'm all for it because finding rims for 8x6.5 is difficult as heck lol.

If you’re not wanting to do 4x4. I’d at least swap the front beams, they should be cheap since they aren’t very desirable. It’ll keep you from needing two different wheels, and two different sizes of tire. To answer your question, yes the axle bolts to the leaf springs, as long as you’ve got the “correct” axle for your truck. Pickup vs Cab and Chassis.

Super informative, thank you for sharing. Are there any benefits of using any particular year of axles ranging from 05-16?
@GarrettsOBSGarage Жыл бұрын
There are subtle differences between the years. 05-07 is my favorite year range because the coil buckets on the frame are flat, in 2008, they added a large dimple on the back of the bucket which needs removed to use them on the OBS. The rear axle shock brackets bolt on, which makes it easier to flip the one forward. The steering box, should you use it, bolts right up to the OBS steering shaft. I also like the way the front sway bar mounts to the axle. So the 05-07 is the most desirable in my opinion. However, the rear pinion bearing in that era can be problematic due to its size.

@GarrettsOBSGarageАй бұрын
The SKY one is a heavier built mount. I found out recently that they still can crack like the RYD ones did originally, but it isn’t catastrophic when they do like the RYD ones could have been. Since then, RYD has redesigned their mount and it’s stronger, and I don’t believe they have cracking issues any longer. Track bar selection, it depends on what coil mounts you buy. As mentioned in the video, the mounts add lift, and whatever coil mounts you buy, will determine the track bar you need, lowered, stock, lifted. Additionally, whichever track bar mount you use will also factor into that lowered, stock, lifted track bar selection.

So, its a matter of preference for the box. If you decide to use the OBS box, you have to have your pitman arm reamed out. Which can be an issue if you don't have a machine shop to do it for you. RYD Sells the pitman arm already reamed if you decide to go that route. I've been told that the 05 Box has a little more "throw", and turns sharper, and also turns faster than the OBS box. I haven't driven the truck with the 05 Box enough to get a good feel for it yet. If you choose to use the 05-07 box, you have a couple modifications to do. My instructions are setup for the hydroboost setup, since all of my trucks are hydroboost. I haven't done one with a vacuum setup. This is how I did the lines on the truck in the video, and I haven't seen what others have done to complete this task, but I know that this works. M14x2.0 - 140mm Bolts required (3) 9/16” Drill Bit for frame hole enlargement. Gates 365892 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (05 Superduty) Gates 370660 Return Hose (92-96 OBS) Gates 365930 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (92-97 F-superduty) 3/8” O-Ring Flaring tool -Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365930, set aside. -Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365892, set aside. -Install Booster side nut from Gates 365930 onto Gates 365892 Hose and flare. -Remove nut from Gates 370660 Return hose -Install Booster side nut from Gates 365892 onto Gates 370660 Return line and flare. -Massage lines to fit 05 Box. In the end, its a matter of what you want to use, and what you're willing to do.

The driveshafts are a plus to have so you can use flanges or the front shaft as a whole. If you want to do the transfer case swap, then you’d need that too. I have done a lot of research but I still think I have two questions, if you have a second - I am going to try to do this on the cheap, but that being said I still need custom parts such as the 05 compatible pitman arm and track bar mount. I think those are two things i cant get around (unless you have any suggestions). It says the track bar and pitman arm on RYD is set up for 0"-3" so i think that should work with the stock track bar ? I guess there is only one way to find out for sure.. Secondly is if you have ever done this with a zf-5 ? They say you need to buy a replacement cross member but its I would like to make my own or cut up the existing one, the $630 seems overpriced Thanks !
@GarrettsOBSGarage4 ай бұрын
I believe I have the pitman arm you need. I’d have to look in my stash of parts, but I want to say I bought one or two and then went to the SD box. I can look if you want me to and I’d sell it for less than what you’d pay for a new one. As far as the track bar mount, the SKY one was probably the best bet back when I made this video, but as I hear it RYD has improved their process. The SKY one is setup to use the original track bar but only if you use their buckets which add 1” of lift. I used the RYD and I had a 0”-3” adjustable track bar on a 2” lift and I had to shorten my track bar for some reason with their track bar mount on OEM buckets. So, if you use the OEM 05+ buckets, you’ll NEED an adjustable track bar for lowered applications unless you do at minimum a 1” lift on SKY. If you go more than 1”, you’ll need an adjustable track bar for a 0”-whatever (lifted). I don’t know what the RYD would need, and the best bet is to call and ask them. I had a ZF truck here last week with the RYD crossmember in it. I didn’t install it, but the guy who did said it sucked to get all lined up, but it’s very engineered and looked decent and fit nice. You can try and build your own, but you have to completely move it out of its original position and have a way to make something structural to hold the transmission and also avoid other things like the driveshaft and exhaust. So, while the crossmember is a little pricey, it’s probably worth the money once you factor in the headache of trying to build your own and make sure you have proper height, and alignment, and clearance. The issue is, the radius arm mounts occupy the same space as the ZF crossmember, so you have to move it to a totally different spot.

The solo kit isn’t bad, but it’s not cheap and you’re still dealing with the Dana 50, and pivot brackets.

Will that work on a gas e4od. With a 1356 transfer case
@GarrettsOBSGarage Жыл бұрын
It’s an NP271. Here is a link to a video covering the transfer case installed in the truck. NP271 Transfer Case Swap into an OBS Ford kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5rOpoegm66qfbs

Yes, you can use the NP271 where the 1356 was. Your shift linkage may be different in length than the one I used because my truck had a 4407, and the driveshaft will also need the specified front yoke to mate to the transfer case and the proper length as well.

There’s a company that makes a flat flange for the 4407 for 120 dollars
@GarrettsOBSGarage Жыл бұрын
The 4407 in this truck needed rebuilt, and I paid 200 for a the 271. The 4407 is too hard to get parts for, and if you do find them, they are expensive. I looked around for flanges and what not, and I wasn't too happy with my findings, so I swapped it. Where did you find that flange?

High angle driveline made mine and funny thing in my area the 271s are hard to find I have 2 of them out of the 20 plus parts trucks I’ve got but I probably have 6 4407 tcase setting around

I’ve heard of HAD. But, never had dealings with them. They don’t advertise stuff like that though. You’d have to call and request it. Me and another guy spent about 2 months trying to find an F350 4407. The F250 4407 is plentiful. If you find an OEM F350 yoke, you’ll pay out the nose for that, they sell locally for 150-200 when they show up. I’ve seen them for 250 online from used and new retailers. Then you’d need the F350 front shaft also, which is what I was going for. The DC front shaft. Couldn’t find a used one around anywhere, and a new one was 500 bucks. That’s why I recommend the 271. But if you can’t find one. Then you’re kinda stuck then.

The 350 yokes are a pain to find I got very luck and purchased a f350 parts truck for one of mine with a very good shape front shaft the 271 looks like a great swap I honestly never thought about it one of my personal extended cab long bed 4x4 truck 96 I 05 axle swapped it I ended up using the 2005 crew cab short bed 4x4 6.0 rear driveshafts right in place of mine except I had to get the 1410 to smaller tcase pilot hole for the 4407 tcase but lengths where perfect

That’s awesome you got the right length driveshaft like that. The SD shafts are usually a little off from the OBS ones. That’s why I suggest the 271 vs trying to find an F350 4407. To answer your other question you asked. No

Lots of good info thanks man, What’s the measurements on those front buckets?
@GarrettsOBSGarage5 ай бұрын
It’s in the comment section somewhere. I’m not near the truck to measure it at the moment.
