2005 BMW M3 E46 S54 rattle cold start engine sound

3/2005 M3 E46 S54 6MT with 135K kms cold start off throtle rattle.
Could this be vanos related?
Valve adjustment and rod bearings done @ ~127K kms (10/2015).
Rev up to max 2500rpm

Healthy s54 all normal noises vanos and rod bearing falling make totally different noise that you don’t want to here

That rattling sound upon revving the engine are the valve lifters

I don´t feel it bad, but is always a good thing to do the Vanos rebuild (Beisan systems) it can be loose bolts only but once that you open it... When Vanos is defective trust me, you can feel it with a weird rattle

These cars are never known to be quiet starters from cold! lol If it was vanos related it would sound much worse, (like marbles rattling around in a can). So could it be the engine or gearbox mounts maybe? Could also be the flywheel giving a bit of chatter. But it could also be the propshaft bearing or flex disc (aka "guibo"). To be honest it is hard to tell and would be best diagnosed from under the car. If anything, the sound doesn't come across at all bad in your video, but if there is anything needing worked on the sound will likely get worse over time. But as I said, the S54 is NOT a quiet cold morning starter and if the rattle you hear disappears after it starts to get warmer then you probably have nothing to worry about..Good luck ;)

Thanks mate. I can hear it from the front. Dont think its mounts (they look ok by the way). Got the beisan repair kit to replace eveything when i find some free time. Maybe its normal. I know that S54 isnt a quiet engine, thats why i like it!! :D I just want to avoid a bigger damage and i like preventative maintenance.

Nice one mate, sensible move. The beisan repair kits are well known for durability and should be a one time fit for the duration of your ownership of the car. Preventative maintenance of these cars are definitely worth the time and effort! I'm pretty certain your engine sounds good (from what I can make out in the vid), but better to be safe than sorry - if anything you will have at the very least peace of mind after the refurb job on your vanos ;)

I wanted to follow up with you, I bought a brand new oil filter housing and installed it and the cold start rattle is gone.

You re right. My mech thought that was the fault.I bought a used one but end up not installing it cause it is ok now. Maybe the valve inside was stuck and somehow is working now. And iam not leaving the oil more than 6K kms. Thank you for your comment and tip.

I have that same sound about 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm. 150k miles on it bought it in 2019. It sound like some ticking. Might need valve adjustment for me or something.

Do you find the reason for the rattle because my car has the same rattle. After Beisan vanos rebuild and new tensioner.

It is normal mate. I think it is from the oil pump until it builds up pressure (if iam saying it correct).

+zaharias koumpias honestly not sure if it's normal, I know the s54 is a noisy engine, but mine definitely sounds similar and I'm under 70k miles. I should probably upgrade the vanos I guess. Thanks for posting this.

could be cam bolts loosing ! I hear the slight rattle and also could be hub rattle ,I did a Cerma oil engine treatment just that alone did major quieting on Harmonics and when i get 1500 miles on this treatment will do there cerma Vanos treatment as to restore the systems O rings ! I have 81K does not burn a drop of oil and I Highly recommend Cerma !!!

Its about a year now that i did a full Beisan refresh and the hub was fine. Cam bolts were fine but i also changed them.

yeah well worth changing those bolts as harding dye from factory is heat sensitive and breaks down ! so why not do a new after sound for what you replaced ,this would be nice follow up !
