Hey thanks for the video. Installing a new thermostat tomorrow. Really helpful to see it done and calling out 8mm size saves time getting sockets and the tools needed for repair. We've done all the work on our 2005 via KZbin. KZbinrs Save Cars!

Added Tip: Since the thermostat is actually upside down and faces the ground because of the cam-driven water pump, you'll likely need to take the entire thermostat housing off--after two tries I gave up trying to properly seat the o-ring on the bottom flange without find out it's leaking. If you remove the whole plastic thermostat housing It's much easier lining up the bottom flange with tapered spout on the bottom flange as you can turn it up side down when working. Technically a new 8255A O-ring should be used on the water connector pipe that mats up against the water pump housing. Mine seemed to be in good shape so I re-used it. After cleaning out the water pump aluminum surface or the old blue sealant, I added a 1/8" bead of Permatex blue RTV sealant to it and put it back together, letting it cure for 24 hours before adding coolant. It's more work removing the housing as you need to disconnect the 4 main hoses (you can leave the top two smaller hoses connected as there should be enough slack in the lines), but honestly it worked much better/faster in the end as I spent about a third of the time doing it. Thanks for the video though.

Yes, I believe that's also a 3.0 Variable Valve Timing engine .... Same engine.. I believe in 2009 for the Ford Duratec 3.0... the Actuators changed to electronic instead of Oil Pressure activated...

Hi, look, I watched your video of a 2005 Ford Freestyle, how you changed the ICE thermostat, the same thing, but it's returning the antifreeze to the tank. How can I purge the cooling system of this car? I'd appreciate it if you could help me.

Not sure what you mean by returning to the tank

How did you get the air out of the cooling system? I was hoping you showed that.
@CharlesAndCars6 жыл бұрын
Look around 16:00 minutes in .... there's a vent on top of the thermostat... then just run the car until it pushes any remaining air out through the reservoir.

I bet the pump was roaring louder than usual. 5 years old now but whatever. Sister's was leaking out bottom by where camshaft mates to pump and the weeping Crack /hole next to shaft. Incidently stay away from keyed to cam type pumps. Buy bolt up to cam shaft only. Keyed ones don't last and may damage camshaft. After market ones with bolt up are available. Motorcraft brand ones will hurt your feelings and bank account. Appreciate your time and video.

I had to replace mine figured no problem I've done plenty of them , but the housing on mine was warped because it was made of plastic, I thought I messed up originally and re-did it twice still leaked, the center of the three bolt couplings was separated by a centimeter and would not seal properly. I looked on here to see if I had done something wrong and found many other comments, that's my two cents warped housing after a 3 minute max , overheat warped my plastic couplings. Ouch pricey...

How do you bleed coolant system?
@CharlesAndCars4 жыл бұрын
I show a little bit about that 17-18 minutes in. There's a bleeder on the thermostat housing to get the air out of the system. Other than that it's pretty much fill through the resevoir and let the thermostat open up and purge the air out of the system.

Correction on this video: The orange O-ring IS NOT the thermostat round gasket! It is the Water Outlet gasket (O-ring) for the thermostat housing to the water pump. The thermostat round gasket IS NOT and O-ring but rather a round rubber gasket PN# RG-571. If you try to use the Water Outlet O-ring as the thermostat gasket, IT WILL LEAK.
@EvilSearchEngine Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's what's happened to me. Old thermo came out with a black o-ring. Went to the parts shop and came back with an orange o-ring that's exactly the same to the naked eye. Put it all back together and leaks like a sieve when filling. Looks like I'm picking up an RG-571 after work and give that a shot.

I just did my Five Hundred which is the same engine/set-up as the Freestyle. I had to set the thermostat up in the housing and carefully place the o-ring in there to make sure it seated around the thermostat and wouldn't leak. This was my 2nd attempt. The first time it leaked because I just laid the o-ring in there much like you did and it didn't seal. Oh, and these cars are a BITCH to bleed out all the air! I had to burp the system three times!

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle Wagon Sel AWD and as soon as you tell a mechanic that you have a Ford they run like you have a contagious disease. I also need the gasket cover but the one that want to rip me off say that i need a whole need gasket kit. Mine has 304,000 im trying to have it make it to 335,000 like the owners manual says that way i have more time to save up money to buy a new car when i trade this in it already has alot of brand new parts on it. I will say its the only car that i have ever owned that needs new brakes every year🙄 i have owned 2 Fords. And other brands multiple cars or suv but the freestyle bonly car that needs new brakes or brakes and rotors every year no matter who works on them 🤔🤔🤔

How much of that crap in the thermostat is from the water pump impeller? It was a common problem, we have an ‘05 as well, never has heat unless we’re at 2.5k rpm... probably have our thermostat wide open all the time.
@CharlesAndCars7 жыл бұрын
Wasnt from the impeller... It was actually the rubber gasket for the thermostat that had started to come apart
@arietapia13366 жыл бұрын
MD Willington. That sounds like you had air trapped in the heater core, it's very difficult to get air out of the cooling system on these.
