He could have lowered the roof and tell what's it like to drive.. I own a USspec model CLK350 convertible, that was never exported out of Germany. Now it lives with me in Amsterdam. I think the v6 offers enough power but has way better gasmilage than the 500. In europe they also sold the 280 smaller v6 but most models have the 1.8 4 cilinder compressor engine. I like the sound of the v6 much better. Now, for open top driving, this car is very comfortable as well. You can do 60 miles an hour all day long with the roof down, but sit in the backseat and 30 is max, because the wind will really get you there.

I love it! The only problem is that it won't stop raining here in Kentucky so it spends a lot of time in the garage! The only big problem from what I've heard is that the 7 speed Gtronic transmission is problematic at best. Mercedes tried to introduce a "sealed for life" transmission in the early 2000's. I'm not sure if they did it to get people to buy new transmissions ($7,500) or if they really believed that they would last a while. 70,000 miles is the limit from what I hear. The key is that you MUST replace the fluid and filter EVERY 35,000 miles, even though Mercedes says you don't ever have to change it! Yet another expense ($500) but it's better than a new tranny! This is my seventh Mercedes I've owned so I know maintenance is high. My CLK 500 just turned over 90,000 so I guess the PO and I have done something right! Only other thing is that CLKs tend to go through tires pretty fast but again it's to be expected. I was pleasantly surprised with the gas mileage. About 18 city and 27 highway. Not bad for a big V8 In short I think it's a wonderful car that's fun to drive country roads as well as being very smooth and sedate on interstate driving with the top up. Thanks for your review! I have fallen in love with my clk350. It is very solidly built. I was a little hesitant giving up a 5.2L for a 3.5L. Living in the city the mpg are awesome with the 350 I get 23 in town and 30 on the highway. It had great power off the line and around town. The 500 and 550 are great for moving quick. I am mostly sitting in stopped to 30 mph traffic so the v6 is just super. All so the maintenance costs and are very reasonable with the 6 opposed to the 8.

if you want a good interior on the cheap, look into the e500 instead of the clk500. it's less pretty on the outside but just as good if not better interior, it tends to be more reliable too

Why do you say the boxster isn't a joy to drive at slow speeds ? I'm actually looking at both cars as a potential purchase within 90 days certainly and while I really like the boxster I'm afraid of it being too rough on my 60 yo neck. So now to see you mention it not being a joy to drive at slow speeds please explain. P.S. I think you've done an excellent job on this review and also, won't the 550 smoke the boxster in straight line acceleration and also smoke the boxster s of the same year?

Bobby Budnick There's a little black switch near the gear selector. It can only be operated when stationary. It's pretty quick going up and down around 20seconds.
