Following this very steps I was able to change my clutch on my Seat Altea XL 1.6 petrol. There was some minor difference on the gearbox bolts and the exhaust pipe but all in all it was very easy job, I was able to do it myself and it took me around 4-5 hours in total. As an alignment tool I used my "right eye" and the gearbox went on in a matter of seconds.. Thanks a lot for the video man I appreciate it indeed 💪🙂

I came across this and watched it simply because i have a Mk5 1.6 FSI Golf. Good strong car but it only likes super plus fuel. Normal unleaded makes the engine rattle when pulling away espeacially on hills. This gave me an insight in what a mechanic doing this, has to go through. Man seems to knows exactly what he is doing. My clutch seems fine at the moment. My Golf has done 53k from new. At what kinda mileage does the factory clutch tend to go on these.

@garyoakes14733 жыл бұрын
The last time I changed a clutch was nearly 40 years ago and this was on an inline gearbox. I watched the video three times before embarking on the mission to replace the Golf clutch. I must admit it was not easy. Just about every nut, bolt and screw were challenging to undo. This is not surprising for a 15 year old car. A stud on the ball joint snapped as a result of rust. The weight of the gearbox was also challenging when lifting back into position. I spent a good 10 hours replacing the clutch and this was really only achievable and possible due to the thorough step by step well put together video tutorial. Apart from my time being free, the clutch products including the clutch plate set, gearbox oil and the clutch centralising tool cost me just under £100 here in the UK. Of course I had to pay extra to replace the ball joint. I was not clear as to how much gearbox oil to put back in but went for 2 litres. Is this correct?? I also had one piece leftover. This is something that fell off the gear change mechanism and is a plastic dome shape thing. Any ideas anyone?? I would be glad to show an image if there was a way to do this.

I need to do this job on my 2006 Golf 5 SDI. Do you have a good impact ? Because I don't and I see Kevin here uses a Milwaukee Fuel series, I assume the 18v one, that's a friggin monster, and expensive here. Is this job do-able with hand tools and maybe a Deko 18v impact ? And yes for my 5 speed manual tranny I read its 2L somewhere. Or 1.9L but 100 ml won't kill it I think, if it lived that long. My car has over 720K KM clocked and it was beat by driving school as its first owner. Still runs!
@garyoakes14732 жыл бұрын
@@Juppie902 Hello. I did not use an impact drill, although are useful, as I was not prepared to spend more than I needed to. The job is about perseverance as well as following the video step by step. There was one point in the video where I was unable to get my bearings. If you are looking to do the job then I can probably help you here. In terms of tools, ensure you have the correct torx sockets etc especially for removing the driveshaft bolts. Regarding the driveshaft bolts, I would replace these for new ones. I purchased these from eBay. Because the age of the car, you are likely to find many of the bolts/nuts/screws difficult to remove. Use long-reach tools like a breaker bar. This should help. When removing the clutch fluid, catch this in a container so that you can measure the amount removed. I did do this but then dropped the container and spilt the contents. The clutch change on the Golf is challenging but doable. I guess the challenging aspect is why there is a large garage cost to do the work. Hope this helps. Do come back if you have further questions.

I know I'm replying a little late but gearbox oil capacity should be around 3 litres. You are supposed to put 2 litres in, then spin the gearbox for about 5 minutes and then fill remaining 1 litre.
@garyoakes14732 ай бұрын
@@darksoul7538 Thank you for this advice. I did end up adding more gearbox oil to the point where the oil started to drip out of the refill hole. This would have been close to 3 litres.

I have read you put red grease on the parts on the video but what did you clean the fly wheel with before when you sprayed the parts? if my DMF is okay when I take it apart is it wortth keeping it or shall I sitck with the SMF as I am on a tight budget! @WMCS4 жыл бұрын
Oscar Montero honestly pal... your attention to small details are very impressive ... I never use the sump to lift the engine back up. Only for lowering and holding it in place whilst the gearbox gets removed and installed .... I always use an axle stand to take the weight while I shift the jack underneath the gearbox for lifting back up ... I was surprised myself when I saw the red rubber grease on the bolts still very fresh .... so I asked the customer wether he’d got the clutch replaced fairly recently and to my surprise he’d got the car for 6 years and never changed the clutch... it really shows how effective the rubber grease is... particularly on the VW’s as they are renowned to oxidise the bolts which generates very dry white powdery rust which in turns often seizes the bolts in place ... This was a nice repair and without filming it would have been about 3 hours Max. But always an extra 2 hours for filming any repairs .... Thanks as always for your input on the forum.
