2007 Chevy Colbalt Serpentine Belt Replacement

Partial Video on how to change the Serpentine Belt on a 2007 Chevy Cobalt with a 2.2L Ecotec Engine. There are two belt types for models with Air Conditioning, so it depends on the shape of the weight on the AC compressor clutch.
I could not get my serpentine belt tool into the 3/8" square hole in the belt tensioner, so I used a piece of wood to force the tensioner up so I could remove and install the belt. I DO NOT recommend this!

Thanks for posting the part number on the belt. I have been trying belts after belts and finally because of you i got the right belt, and all of my problems went away. Thanks again sir

I did what you said, except I jacked the car up and then down on a metal bar to release the tension on the belt. Whoa! they sold me a bad alternator so I had to do it again.. But I said that I will never tear into the firewall again and spend all day replacing it. So here comes the trick. You will never be crawling under the car doing this again. Get a shipping strap and a 2 X 2 3/4 the width of the car. Feed the new belt around the crank and air conditioning compressor. Feed the shipping strap under the metal part of the tensioner and tighten it up around the wood which you will anchor on top of the strut bracket. Lift up the wood and the tensior will rise upward enough for you to place the belt around the alternator pulley. It takes less than 30 minutes.

You must have not changed many belts because that used belt is pretty standard. It's standard separation cracking. A good tool for this is a sliding breaker bar. They go from 12" to 20". Most are 1/2" drive but after the adaptor, they usually put you at the right clearance. Good job on the belt change!

i did the same thing but i used another jack with a metal pipe and lifted the tensioner and removed the belt in 2min.

The stick a good idea but I think it could be better if it was a home made tool made out of metal. instead of wood

They make serpentine belt tools where the 3/8" cube can be inserted in several orientations, like a gear/sprocket that slips into teeth in the handle. My plan is to have a buddy of mine weld a 3/8" cube on each end of a piece of 3/16" x 18" bar steel. At a slightly different angle/orientation at each end. Again, I don't recommend the way I did it, but it was late in the evening and I wanted to get it done.
