I bought a new car for my wife and the headlights weren't working. We thought it would be a simple light bulb change but that wasn't the case. I ended up having to take the steering wheel apart to fix a "simple" headlights issue. Here's my walk-through and thought process throughout the repair.

This is TOO funny!! Way to fit the engineer stereotype perfectly by doing 97% more labor than necessary to remove the combination switch hahaha!! Laughing aside, great video & thank you. For anyone else, just remove the top & bottom plastic covers around the steering column, unplug the combination switches electrical connector, remove the 2 screws for combination switch, pry/slide combination switch out & replace it.

Thanks for the video . This was the best instructions in layman's terms to understand how a switch works and to use the voltmeter for continuity testing. I will do this on my 2007 honda fit today since I am having the same exact problems it seems. If my switch is not working I am going to replace the switch instead of the splice fix. But I also might try and save money by doing the splice also. Still undecided. Thanks again

This video is helpful, but I think the hack will result in both filaments lighting when in high-beam mode. The ground selection chooses which filament, whereas the hot leads for both filaments lead back to the fuses and the relay. Two potential problems are 1: overloading the fuse and relay, resulting in no headlights, or 2: burning out the bulbs due to the heat of both filaments burning simultaneously (again, resulting in no headlights). Assuming the switch is the problem, you are better off replacing it. They cost between $25 and $50 on Amazon and eBay.

I seem to have the same problem. The high beam works, but not the lower beam. I started the car and the head lights were on at night. When I got to the Store and as I was driving on the street I noticed that my head lights were off. So I tried the high beam lights and they came on and that is how I go home. Is it possible the low beam lights can go bad not the high beams? if the lower beam go bad, replacing them seems natural. On this video post, it looks like someone accidentally or otherwise, the cable was tampered with.

I came across your video after experiencing the failure of the low beams to light. At 2 minutes into the video you disconnect the battery but I have a question before tearing down the steering wheel controls. Each fuse indicates that 12v is available with the exception of the two 20amp fuses. I don't know if those fuses are before or after the switch which is why I'm asking if I should be looking elsewhere instead as we've had issues with rodents chewing wires in the past. Cheers 👍
@FixitFox
@FixitFox Жыл бұрын
Hi, I wish I could help you but it's been a few years since I made this video. You'll have to look up where the 20V fuses lead to. Also try to measure it with the car on and off. Maybe there's a switch/relay disconnected when it's off. Hope this helps.

Before I did that job I went out and bought the cheapest set of headlights and THEY WORKED!!!! I noticed that one buld was blown. The other one was not. @FixitFox
@FixitFox 3 жыл бұрын
That would only work if you find a ground wire nearby to splice it to. Would be a hard task and you would probably need to search the wiring diagrams for a wire nearby that's directly connected to ground. I'd say it also introduces weather issues because under the hood is more susceptible to weather/water than the cabin is. Therefore more likely to cause damage/corrosion/short circuit to your wire splice if it's not properly protected from water intrusion. Good idea though. I like the out of the box thinking.
