The Pilot was making a strange noise under the passenger side dash. Turns out it was the HVAC blend door motor malfunctioning. This video will show you how to repair it without having to buy a new one.

FYI for anyone watching, there is the BLEND actuator that this video is about which blends hot and cold and its on the passenger side. There is also a MODE actuator over on the driver side that directs what vents, including defrost that air goes through.

You're correct. This video is about the blend door actuator motor on the passenger side. I haven't needed to repair the mode actuator on the driver's side. Is it a similar repair?

Thanks! This was a straight forward and accurate repair video without a bunch of fluff and it worked perfectly to correct the problem in my car. I removed the glove box for better access.

THANK YOU FOR THIS ADAM!!!!! You just saved me many hundreds of dollars today as I just fixed this on my 2007 Pilot!!!! I actually just replaced mine with one from amazon and works as new!!

Awesome detailed video. Only thing missed is that it matters what way the motor goes back in the actuator. The numbers need to be up, like you showed when it came out, otherwise polarity will be reversed and it will go backwards. Again, thanks for such a great video! My Ridgeline has the same issue, and it would be great to repair instead of replacing the parts.

Awesome video - I tried in on my Mode actuator (driver side motor) in my Honda Pilot 2005. I cleaned w/o any special cleaner. Tried it, and it did not work.... but... Re-cleaned it - taking out all the parts and doing a slightly more diligent clean (basic though - just a paper towel). Bent up lightly the 6 metal prongs to maybe make better contact with the metal on the large gear. Put it all back together - I repositioned the flat end of the axel with the little arrow on the box. No idea if this was necessary or not. But after all of this, when I put it back in the car it was working! No buying replacement part. Just a bit of labor (and patience in gently lifting the tabs to not break them).

Thanks for doing this video. I was hoping this was my problem, but not really sure now. When you say to make sure to get cable retracted as much as possible before removing, mine won't move at all when changing from hot to cold. I had to eventually just remove the cable from the heater control valve in the engine compartment and manually pivot the valve to allow cold air to flow in. Do you know why the cable won't move at all when changing from hot to cold? TIA

Making sure the cable is retracted is just to make reinstallation easier. You can still do this project if it won't move, it will just be a little more difficult to disconnect the linkage. Keep in mind that if it won't move at all, the actual motor on the inside of the actuator might be seized up. It's still worth a shot to try and fix it though. If you make it through the repair and it still won't move, you'll need to get a new one and replace it. The valve in the engine compartment is to adjust coolant flow to the heater core. (Moving it will shut off hot coolant to the core, and as a result, you will have colder air blowing.) I hope this answers your question!

Watch the motor terminal polarity. If you rotate the motor by 180deg it will not work. It will reverse direction.

You are correct! The numbers need to be facing up when reinstalling the motor.

Not necessary to go this deep. Clean the contacts for motor and contacts that touch the big gear. Don't need spray cleaner either. A little wet sand paper is all that's needed. Careful with the clips that hold it together.

Great video! I followed your instructions and the noise is gone. Thanks! However the temperatures are now reversed. When I set the controls to a cold temperature I get heat. When I set to heat I get cold. What did I do wrong?

Oh my goodness! I'm glad the video helped you out. Perhaps you reversed the polarity to the motor itself? That's really the only thing I can think of that might cause that.
