A brief ride of the 2007 Triumph Tiger 1050. This is only an initial impression of this bike in town conditions which to me, on this bike, is more important than out in the country. Best watched in 720p

Russ: Because of this and the Pt 2 review I went and bought one! I found a (new) 2011 SE in a (new) dealership and it's being delivered soon!

I'm in a fortunate position where if I want raw power I have the Tuono. The good thing about this bike is will suit people who aren't bothered about ripping everywhere. It's a large comfortable bike capable of touring (I can't think of anything to follow my Pan when I get rid)

I have loved the tiger for the 1.5 years that I have had it.. there are some things I would love to see improved (clutch, headlight, pedal and grip vibration) but overall I have loved it for short and long rides.

I had one in the shop but never got round to trying it. The customer loved it though. I really should try harder to get out on these bikes.

With you on the XC Dave, just wonderful bikes, practical too and for the riding that I do probably the best choice out there (even though I've always loved the bonneville it's just not an all year every weather bike). I've considered the vstrom but its not the same, so I was glad to see Russ reviewing the 1050 as they've been around longer and so can be picked up for less than the 800 (can't find one for much less than £6500) It's nice to dream isn't it. :-)

This is the reason I asked. People who have owned the larger bikes tend to prefer them. The purchase and running costs is a good arguement for keeping a 600 for sure but have a 1000+cc for a while and you won't look back (empty wallet but a bigger smile) :-)

Just wanted to let anyone know that was thinking about buying a Shiver. I wasnt happy with that specific Shiver and apart from the fueling and rubbish turning circle that make it not suitable as my only bike I do still ebnjoy riding Traceys Shiver. Good initial review Russ, looking forward to seeing what you say when you take it out for a proper ride. I will try to get the mic set upi on my camera so you have a double blog to play with if you want.

It's an excellent point you make. One of my favourite sayings is "there's no substitute for cubes" Larger cc bikes are easier and less effort to use. It's not about top power, it's about ease and feel. Out of interest, have you owned a large capacity bike (1000cc+) ?

My Tiger1050SE is so sweet, when new it did have a bit of clunkyness in the gearbox but after the first couple of oil changes that went away. I really enjoy having the Tiger and only for extreme long distances do I have any complaints in the seating position.

My instructor had CBF500's and those have a hump in the seat that due to my height and size i had to sit on, was very uncomfortable and worn out my riding trousers so that i now have a nice gap right on my behind. F800 gs is a plank too and that is great.

It's funny cos years ago my friend complained about his Kawasaki box too. He wouldn't believe me until I took him on the back of it and proved it was his shifting. If a bike is slightly to high for you and you can't get a lowering kit, just make sure you stop on good ground without a dip.

To be honest only sucky thing about my bike is the chain :) gets so dirty especially after offroading. would have loved the f800 st belt (altough that has downsides too) How many miles do you do in a year on your instructing bike? and how many hours are you usually in the saddle?

Bike preference is definately a personal opinion. The best thing to do is just ride one. American Speed Triple owners took great exception to my Tuono/Speed Triple review because they owned a Triumph (even though the Tuono hadn't arrived in the states at that time and they hadn't ridden one) Usually, people who own bikes, defend their purchase and go by specs on a sheet instead of seat of the pants riding. Spec sheets are rubbish and don't reflect the feel of a bike.

I have owned many Triumphs, 955i Daytona, Street Triple x2, Bonni..... Now have Sprint ST 1050. I have always found the boxes 'clunky,' and mates of mine have said the same. However, we have all watched your gear changing video now and for the best part it has solved the problem! After all this time crying about Triumph gearboxes it turned out to be us, do we look silly now or what? I would love a Tiger but it's to high for me (I'm 5'6) is there a skill for being confident on a higher bike?

I don't do as many miles per year as I used to now as I spend a lot of time in the shop but I have a wimpy butt now. Even sitting in my arm chair at home for more than an hour makes me uncomfortable now. :-) I find the flatter the seat, the better as domed seats push into my under bits.
