This is one of the most underrated cars of all time, and I like it!! Everyone thinks you're in a standard 3 series until they mess with one. Only two issues with the N54, and let's be honest, $400 for a hpfp and a couple hours to install? You bought a BMW, you pretty much don't care it's worth it. Turbo waste gate set-up issue? Who cares haha upgrade your charge pipe!! But, if you buy one with decent miles you're covered until 120k for those "problems" and with about $1200 in tuning upgrades it's a freaking beast!! Alpine trans flash?? Try that out!

Ahhh... I remember when my Dad had his '06 330i. He LOVED that car so much. We even named it Scooter, because it was such a quick and silent little thing. We would have bought the car in 09 when the lease was up, but Bob Smith BMW wanted too much for the car. Sadly, we had to give it back, and we got an Infiniti which we did not like at all. Then, we got an Acura which we hated more, but now, my Dad is considering a new 328i, 340i or even an M3. I really hope he gets one, it'll be like a throwback.
@chrisg0008 жыл бұрын
Haha that's crazy! My dad bought an 06 330i new in 2005. It was his Christmas present and he literally put 10k down just to get the payment low because he was financing it for 5 years. He ended up selling it 4 years later when he was almost done paying it off (not that smart) LOL and we got an Infiniti G37 instead. He was afraid of the reliability in the long run. BMW was slower, but hugged the road better than the Infiniti. But we know the infiniti's reliability is way better than the bimmer's. The Infiniti still puts a smile on my face to this day :)

I bought one about a month ago. 2009 with 80k miles. Red interior like the one on the video. Your statement holds so much truth. This car is beautiful and elegant and fast , BUT parts are expensive. Mine is currently needing a high pressure fuel pump that cost 700 dollars without labor. Take that into consideration when purchasing these types of vehicles. Make sure you can afford the maintenance. Invest a little time and research and I’d say you can do a good amount of work on your own and save a couple yourself a couple hundred dollars. But again, it’s an amazing machine.

Good review. As an owner of a 335i 08, I must add that the twin turbos can be a time bomb for $. If you need to replace them from the dealership, it will be about $6K+ (Parts alone are about $4K). If you're in the market for a used one, please set aside a reserve for maintenance because it is EXPENSIVE and one item can easily be $500+. That said, I really enjoy this car and I have added Dinan stage 2 that really adds a huge kick.

Why do some people like the paddle shfters mounted on the column instead of the steering wheel? Wouldn't it be easier to shift this way?
@zxbc110 жыл бұрын
I don't understand it either. I guess it has to do with the fact that the steering ratio on most road cars makes it so that the paddles end up in very unpredictable and awkward locations during a turn, and it's always better to be able to reach to a consistent location for that gear change vs having to think about where it is constantly. But again, how often do you really need to shift during a big turn? Personally I find it easier when the paddles are mounted to the wheel simply because they tend to be closer to the fingers, without me having to reach very far.
@MegaTechpc10 жыл бұрын
When the paddles are mounted on the steering column they are always in the same place no matter how the wheel is turned so its easier to find up or down when your focus is on the road and the corners. Wheel-mounted paddles can change position when the wheel is upside down making up down and vice versa which is undesirable...
@theproweb10 жыл бұрын
From experience: You're making a hard turn, you want to downshift, with a steering wheel mounted one, you're gonna have a bad time, because you don't sense where the paddles will be. With a column shifted one, you can do the shift because you know where they are by memory. Just like with a manual, you know where the shifter is.

I also think that this tiny "twin powered turbo" (not twin turbo) engine in the larger 5-series (528i) would be subject to significant stress when driven aggressively, as opposed to the older 6 cyl 325i & 525i.

Chances the HPFP was changed under warranty so the only thing to worry about in these cars in the long run is carbon build up due to the direct injection but other than that they're awesome. That's why I'm not sold on direct injection because whatever fuel costs you save will go towards getting the carbon cleaned out every 2 years so you really save nothing but the companies will market it differently.
@IKhanNot10 жыл бұрын
I think Audi is using both the port and direct injection method in their FSI motors so the intake valve gets washed with fuel. The new DI motors in the MBs are too new to have issues so time will tell. Right now your best bet would be to go with an MB with the older M272 unit, smooth as silk and bulletproof reliable except the early build ones.

Buy the 2009 335i E62 (Coupe) with 7speed dual clutch and the N54 engine. This gives you killer looks, power and fast gear shifts. Just check that the high pressure fuel pump has been replaced and then you good to go.

Dear Soybean Fey, I currently own 06 G35 coupe and 07 TL type - s and plan to replace one of them for 08 335i. I haven't decided which one to trade in yet. My questions is what should I expect in terms of driving experience and reliability? I have never owned BMW before and I haven't had any reliability issues with my previously owned several Japanese sport sedans.

I own a 335xi with the n54 engine. Almost exactly the same car in the video. I want to say that it hasnt met my expectations in terms of reliability, but I dont feel thats an accurate depiction. Really, this car just requires a lot of attention ($) when it comes to regular and preventative maintenance. There are issues with developing misfires and issues with the High Pressure Fuel Pumps (HPFP), but thats due to inadequate maintenance. If you use the right oil, at proper intervals (5-7k miles, not 14k miles as BMW suggests), you probably wont see much fuss from the HPFPs. The issue with developing misfires is largely in part with the nature of DI FI engines. Spark plugs and coils wear faster(they both *are* wear items) in this type of environment. Its simply the nature of the beast. Luckily, with the aid of the $20 spark plug socket required, troubleshooting and fixing these issues are infinitely easy. In my personal opinion, I think all of the downsides are outshined by all of the upsides. Its a wonderful car to drive. Sports car when you want it to perform, magic carpet ride cruiser when you dont.

atarparker That's a known issue with the 335xi's. I own one here in Alaska and looking at the carfax report, it looks like the previous owner in New Jersey had the injectors replaced about two years before I bought it (I bought it early last year). One thing I notice with my car is rough idling in cold mornings, and when I punch it on the highway and literally FLOOR the pedal, the car will stutter, the check engine light comes on and it has a bad shake (like a misfire). I have to park it, turn it off and turn it back on. The check engine light turns off and I'm back to driving normally again. The car, however, is super solid. The turns I take around the mountains give me a serious boner and the sound of the engine is like no other. Thankfully I haven't ran into any major issues other than a $60 oil change that was forced upon me when noticing that my oil levels were dropping (I had a bad o-ring on my filter cap). I did read somewhere that a trip to the dealer and a request to "update" the computer tackles much of the misfire issue. I also read that the misfire is due to a lack of proper configuration in the exhaust chamber inside the pistons of the engine. Apparently carbon builds up overtime to the point where the injectors become unusable, and the dealer's own "injection cleaning service" doesn't really help it much.

architect1803 using premium fuel should eliminate these problems.

zak anthony FAIL. I use nothing but Chevron premium fuel and for the better part of a year, my car still rough idles. Whether it's -30 degrees or 70 degrees here in Alaska, the problem still exists. Once again, this is a manufacturer defect stemming from BMW.

I have a 335xi with the N54 engine, mated to a 6 spd auto. Its almost fully loaded sans the I Drive system (personal preference). Getting to the point: I think the 6spd auto shifts painfully slow if youre not in DS mode. I can eat a sandwich between those shifts.

Redline Reviews Avoid early models with the cumbersome iDrive interface? More like avoid any model with iDrive - you're paying a premium for a crap system. I have a 2008 535i LCI with the updated iDrive and I hate it. My 335i has no iDrive because it simply takes away from the driving experience. Sport package (specifically the sport models with the oil cooler) is a MUST. DO NOT buy a 335i without an oil cooler unless you don't drive it hard.
