I had a BMW 2002 back in the 70's. We took the valve cover off and it made a popping sound from the release of the cylinder vacuum - it didn't even have a gasket! It didn't need one, as it was machined to exact tolerances; you just dripped some oil and torqued it down. Amazing car!

Hi Scotty, love your videos man, not just for the information but also the passion which you bring towards automobiles. Can you please look into making a video on how to properly test a used car for noobs like myself? I've seen the one which shows paint analysis and electronics scan, but please if its not too much trouble, make one which shows how you properly analyze all necessary parts of a vehicle (engine, suspension etc), including how to properly test drive one? Again thanks a lot for taking the time to do all this Scotty, you the man

I had a 2002 325xi that went to 276,000 miles. It could have kept going, I just thought I needed a change. Followed the maintenance schedule and had an honest BMW certified mechanic in town when things went wrong. Paid $39,000 for it out the door and 15 years later sold it for $4K. I miss that car. 😢

My last two cars I've owned are BMW's, and both of them have been solid. My first one was a 2010 335i 2 door coupe with the M-sport package. I had it for over 3 years and sold it to get a 2014 550i with the M-sport package. Bought it at 36k miles and I still have it at 64k miles. I put stage 2 Dinan packages on both of them and have not had any problems with them at all. Powerful and fun!

@@wolfofwacker4578 This is one of the dumbest statements regarding a car's reliability. There is no chance you can know how reliable a car is if it has under 60K miles. I had a 2011 corolla bought it brand new and put 400 000 km on it. I changed the front brakes, oil, and spark plugs once. Now put 300 000 km more on your BMW and then come and talk to me about its reliability. My brother's 2013 535i front axles, water pump gone, passenger door not locking, rear door making funny noises, all this at 140 000 km. Pure garbage compared to a Toyota.

alex west E46 M3 is already an appreciating classic, missed my chance on an E46 M3CS for £10k last year, by the time I had the cash together it had gone and there’s nothing under £18k now. Only thing holding back the E90/92 is the infotainment system, it’s easy to go classic with a classic dash/radio/cd system. Ugly and outdated screens are a hard sell, like a clash of tastes. I know this guy hates bimmers but for all their faults and quality control issues they are one of the best sports saloon/sedans on the market. I can jump into any BMW and instantly know what to expect, how to drive it and have now major adjustments to deal with. Put me in a Merc I’m lost, put me in an Audi I’d fall asleep.

We have always loved our E90 (2006 330i) and it's the nicest car I've ever owned. It does absolutely everything I tell it to do. Yes, we had to replace the composite transmission cover at 139K miles and we've replaced the ignitors (easier than on our Toyota Sienna!), but ECS Tuning and such have great parts and since we've got the tools, we do a lot ourselves. (QuickJack has rocked for all our cars!) I'd love to bring it by sometime and see what codes you could find, though. There's always something that needs repair on most of our vehicles because the newest thing we own is 2008 and we've got 7 cars/trucks and 4 bikes. The kiddos use our vehicles so they don't need a new car payment, so having a fleet actually saves us a pile 'o car payments. Still, something needs an inspection every month and nothing is faster than our VW Jetta VR6 but the GSXR. I know you don't love VWs, but that thing is amazing with almost 600hp to the wheels. Still, it sure costs more to maintain than our Tacoma, so you have a point. Keep the videos coming and keep healthy while you can!

I had a '93 E34 that I absolutely loved, and while every maintenance thing was expensive ($3K for brakes), it never broke down or required anything other than routine maintenance for wear and tear. It was quick, sporty, and comfortable, and did wonders for my single lifestyle. After marrying, I parted with that car and got a 2007 E90, which was a rocket on a roller skate and a ball to drive, but required over $8000 of repairs TWICE (turbo and fuel pump) during the three years that I leased (fortunately) it. My parents both owned Mercedes and wrote checks for those cars like a bad habit, so when the lease on the E90 came up, I turned it in, bought a Nissan Armada that I still own today and vowed never to buy another German car in my life. Between that and my wife's Lexus ES300h, we spend nothing on cars; they just run and run and run.

I had a 2002 E46 BMW 320i. I had it for 6 years. In Finland, one of the toughest places for a car to be. From freezing winters, wet seasons, and a hot summer, to potholes and gravel roads. And I never had an issue. I gave it hell. I regularly blasted it 200kmh on the highway. I drifted it. I launched it. I rev'd it. And I only ever had one coolant leak that took 50€ to fix. I then sold it to a friend, and we got a BMW specialist mechanic shop (Not licensed and expensive, more of an enthusiast shop) to look at it and suggest any major fixes. There were two minor oil leaks. An air sensor that needed cleaning. Rotten fittings on the exhaust pipe. 500€ to fix all that was wrong, and to change the oil and filters. It's never had a major repair for 24 years and 230 000km. And it still doesn't need one. And it has been driven rough and hard, in one of the most brutal conditions.

So.. as a BMW owner for over 20 years, I have to agree with your list for the most part. I've owned a 1972 BMW 2002tii, still have the motor, after a MAJOR rear end accident in that car I bought a 1968 2000ti and swapped the TII motor into it. The motor had 450k before the oil pump failed. Next I've owned a 733i, 1983, last year they had a manual transmission in the US, that car being big and long, the handling felt like a smaller car for sure. A suggestion for the last model of great BMW's is the E36, especially the M3. I've owned one of these and it lasted to 450k miles, at that point the interior started nickel and dime-ing me to death with all the plastic interior parts, the motor was still running strong. Great video, keep up the great work!

Good daily drivers - E46 or E9x 328i with N52K engine, manual transmission. These easily go 200K miles with a bit of cooling system and suspension maintenance. The difficult part is to find one that hasn't been trashed by previous owner(s). The plastic intake manifolds of these cars, contrary to the claim in this video, are practically indestructible as they typically outlast the M54 and N52 engines. The $5,000 dollar diagnostic tool is useless for these cars, but there are dealer level diagnostic tools available for almost no money. The key is to figure out which codes are current and relevant.

2002 330cic here... What an awesome car pure b m w driving pleasure. About my 14 th bimmer and have it about five years now. Drives like a dream, certainly needs attention once in a while and worth every penny. Really nice power without being too much to lose the rear end.

I think the E39 should be on the list too. It had some issues with electronics (traction control module, power Windows, power seats) but the fundamentals of the car like the engine, transmission, and suspension are very well built. I got one with 180k miles (bought it when it had 90k miles) it’s still running like a champ!

@Makoto Shimabukuro the E39 being a holdover from the 90’s was the last BMW worth a crap. After the 2003 model year, BMW died with the 5-Series.

@@WDGary is true but what makes me wanna give up on bimmers, is the repair cost, mostly for the V8 540i, oh my goodness, here in soflo, they wanted 5000$ to rebuild the engine because some coolent got in the engine, the car drove, but no power, and it was a manual, hard to find, i can get a decent honda for 5 k, yeah, not feel same, with my 540i everyone look at me, now everyone just avoid me, save money too. I now thinking bettewn Z3 and S2000

I have a 2014 BMW 535diesel that is amazing. It is a in line 6 cylinder that puts out almost as much torque as an M5 but has the fuel efficiency of a four cylinder car. You should have mentioned this one

3 years ago I picked up a beautiful E39 2000 523i with 209 000 kms on the clock and parked on the side of a road with a for sale sign for just $3000 (down from the asking price of $9000 after a bit of serious negotiation). It needed a few things done like new front shocks (job done for $450 including new Munro shocks) and the headlights were very cloudy (fixed in 2 hours!) and a few other minor bits and pieces. 3 years later, I've still got it and love driving it. Plenty of ooompf, smooth, quiet, luxurious and a real pleasure to drive. Very glad I bought it!

I had a BMW e46 330ci. 18 years old. Only the fuel pump and a coil broke. Coolant system no problems. Water pump was replaced a few times. That was it. Not bad for 350k kms.

Hey Scotty, One thing I never heard you mentioned is that one of the reason so many of the all-time most reliable engines are straight six engines because of their perfect primary and secondary balance. Is your Celica an i6? Also, have you considered the BMW E39 series with the I6 (525i to 530i) or the E53 I6? I don't think I would ever want to own a V8 from BMW, unless, of course I got it for a really good price and was willing to pull the engine and replace the timing chain, slides, sprockets, vanos rebuild, valve seals, valve cover gaskets, etc.

Love the videos. I sold a 2004 525i e60 with 140,000 miles on it a year ago. Ran like a top, exterior, engine pristine, interior great shape. Biggest expenditure $750 transmission selonoids to repair clunk when final downshift at stop. Decided to sell when the AC gave up the ghost and very cost-prohibitive to fix. Quiet. Comfortable. Sold it for $5,000. I guess I was lucky.
