Looks like a 25HNB5 single stage Copeland compressor model coupled with a FV fan coil and controlled by an Infinity (Legacy) control. Control memory holds last 10 system fault codes. Also indoor/outdoor boards will blink the code that is occurring. Infinity boards are DDC and communicate by serial communication. If they can communicate each other, all operations cease. I suspect the Infinity control (UI or User Interface) was displaying "no communication). This is the most common issue with Infinity systems. The older units use a 4 wire ABCD connection. AB is the serial digital signal and CD is the 24 vac volts from indoor transformer to power all Infinity boards. If just one of the 4 wires are broken, grounded or high resistance, it will cause a communication fault and stop system operation. Varmets eating wire insulation, lighting, wire nut connections and weed trimmers are some of the causes. The outside sensor you pointed to was for non-communicating outdoor units. That unit already has one factory installed in bottom left of control box. It the sensor you pointed out is hooked up to sensor terminals on fan coil, it should be removed and reinstall performed on UI. If factory sensor in control box is defective, the sensor you pointed out can be used to replace it, but it must connect at the same terminal on outdoor board as factory installed OAT sensor. Both are 10K ohm negative coefficient thermistors.

If they CAN'T communicate system will not operate.
@NekoIan66 Жыл бұрын
@nsideguy1 can the older Infinity control be upgraded?
@nsideguy1 Жыл бұрын
@@NekoIan66 Yes, the Infinity legacy control can be updated. The Infinity -A and -B controls are backwards compatible to older Infinity equipment. However, Legacy controls can not operate the new inverter outdoor units since its firmware has no means to do so like the -A & -B controls. They are expensive. There are analog inputs on Infinity indoor and outdoor units and can be controlled by an analog thermostat, but you limit functions and features. FE fan coil burns the model size (blower motor size) into fan coil board memory when being powered up by In Infinity control. Once saved into fan coil memory it knows what size it is (it doesn't have a model plug like outdoor units). If you change FE fan coil board, you will need an Infinity control to communicate with it a least one time, when using an analog thermostat. If you don't, the fan coil will operate the fan speed for all modes in high speed fan.

Based on the conditions, your charge looks about spot on!!! 52° ambient 75° indoor For those conditions: 109/412@ 80°IDDB & 106/369@70°IDDB While leaks were "found", it would appear that the last tech to charge the system did a good job. Usually, the little black plastic device mounted on that shelf in front of the board is the OAT. It connects to the outdoor board and then, in communicating configuration, it sends the info to the indoor board and then to the UI(stat). It could be that the OEM sensor failed or it was a very early version that did not communicate to the indoor equipment. Find where those wires terminate and then you will know. If they go to S1/S2 on the UI, it is for OAT. If not it could be for a humidifier or other device.

Even in commercial, I find some new installs with communicating thermostats. I have not found a brand of them that is not "junk." Even when they work, the intention is to become the source of replacement parts, instead of allowing for a stat of your own choosing. Since most of these systems use conventional stat wire, I bypass the Comm parts and install a conventional stat, and all problems cease at that point.

That’s a gd question. If the system is running in cooling mode & the liquid line(from the outdoor to the indoor coil inlet is hot to the touch)…. It’s probably got high head pressure!! Over time some things you’ll know quickly! If u go to indoor air handler 1st on a no cool… touch the liquid line at the coil. If it nearly burns your hand: the outdoor fan isn’t running or the condenser coil is dirty(need to clean the coil) or replace dual/capacitor, fan motor, or check the wiring!? (But check the filter while your at the air handler anyway!?) LOL! When you become a veteran tech you’ll start on inside or outside…. & still wind up in the right place(source of the problem)! I’ll never forget the Bryant Evolution I ran into that had a fault that read something like “Blower not acknowledging commands.” I was a young tech and said fuck if I know and ordered an indoor board and blower motor. Came back, plugged the new motor in, and it didn’t fix shit. I was 95% sure it was the motor. Plugged the old motor back in and changed the board. Same fault. I said “Well, I haven’t tried a new motor and new board yet…” and proceeded to plug the new motor back in. Thing took off and ran. That POS was installed in an 80 year old woman living on social security’s house and the only thing that saved her from getting bent over was that she purchased a ten year parts and labor warranty. Had another Evolution that was energizing and deenergizing the reversing valve in a perfect rhythm. It was a bad thermostat. Those things were unreliable as hell and parts were outrageously expensive. Needless to say, I’m no fan of Carrier. In fact, I’d rather install a Goodman. At least the replacement parts are cheap and the compressor has a 10 year warranty.

I've worked on those models over the years. If it's the 25hna6 model with bristol compressor, it's a known compressor issue. Also typically on the first version of infinity thermostats they tend to lose communication with defrost board. Some times you will see reversing valve shift multiple times which will eventually kill compressor.
@Chris27451003 жыл бұрын
I have a 2009 version. Basically the same set-up. As old as the condenser is, I don't run it in heat mode anymore; just the furnace. I am afraid the reversing valve might get stuck in heat mode and fail to go back into cool. Its not a cheap part to replace.

2008 would have been right around the time that "coil building vendor/sub-vendor" for several of the ICP, and their owner's other corporate lines, was in the early days of using that "corrosion resistive treatement" on the inside of the coils, which took out a BUTTLOAD of TXV's by most manufacturer's, even Danfoss. (their's was a "gummy, gunked-up residue/residual particulate matter" present on one I the TXV's which I did not/was not requested to return (back in the day). I wonder if this "minimal leak" condition is associated with that fiasco?? I'll look to see if I kept any of those picts???? I was somehow led to believe that the additive was added to the water used to 'freeze-form' the coils during their die-jig bending process. At one point, my former business partner (we'd owned a Carrier Dealership), changed twelve TXV's in one month, however, I don't remember him saying if 'pistons' were, or were not affected??!!
@nsideguy12 жыл бұрын
You're about half right. It was the compressor oil that caused the issue with the TXV's gumming up. It could also cause a heat pump heating piston not to slide back and forth during mode changes. There are service bulletins. They can be downloaded on HVAC partners website or call your local Carrier distributor for them.

The Carrier Infinity as well as the Bryant Evolution series are garbage. As you all know Bryant and Carrier are both the same now owned by ICP i think. You can only use these special thermostats, cant use an aftermarket. Also. I dont think this was ever made with a 2 speed compressor, i think it was made with a 2 stage compressor meaning a valve is used vs 2 sepatate motor windings. I have worked on a 1997 Carrier Tech 2000 Silencer System, and it had a Bristol 2 speed compresor and it had a giant circuit board in it as well as a ECM fan motor. The circuit board was bad and customer opted for a new unit with less bells and whistles on it as he had issues with the carrier from day one. What i think the othrr technician meant by tapping on the controller is because sometimes the relays can stick shut and cause mslfunction, and by tapping the controller it will free the relays, but is only a temporarly fix as the contacts are pitted. I have seen this with cheap thermostats the custer will say the heat or ac is running wild and wont shut off. If thermostat is issue, usually pulling off wall and tapping on the little relays will fix issue. I just replace the stat as it will happen again.

@nsideguy1 Жыл бұрын
At 104 PSIG the saturation temp is 33 degrees. You have be a detective to determine if that is normal or not. If return air temp is 45 degrees, that would be normal. If the tech was familiar with the Infinity control, who would 1st looked at fault code history. Then checked the control to see what CFM the fan coil was moving. If control was in dehum mode, it would pump 275 CFM a ton...which could cause a low suction pressure. The subcooling and suoerheat checked and charge adjusted if necessary. If TXV super heat was greater than 20 degrees on that RPB TXV, that would be an issue. Another check would be to look at indoor control and make sure the outdoor tonnage is set correctly. Blower will only pump CFM to match what is inputted in user face control.
