This guy needs to research the HHR SS better. The HHR SS was produced by GM Performance Division from 2008 until May of 2010 when GM closed the Performance Division. May 2010 SSs did not carry the door Badges as the other years, only the lift gate. Cobalt SSs were produced from 2005 to 2010 but only carried the underpowered supercharger until the HHR was introduced in 2008 with the 50.8 mm Borgwarner turbo producing 240 HP from the automatic or 260 HP from the 5 speed manual "no lift" shift transmission. Cobalt wisely followed suit. GM also reengineered the suspension after the 2008 trial run at the well known Nurburgring road course in Germany. Its lap time was 8:43 which was a record for cars in that class. German auto makers were so impressed, they offered their input and GM created the FE5 German inspired performance suspension. The HHR SS, although with respectable drag times, was designed for road courses. The 2009 and 2010 models offered a RPD digital screen where the dash storage was on the earlier models. This gave more readouts which included a G FORCE indicator. GM says the car will produce .81 Gs before going into a slide... mine hit .93 before I heard a squeel. In short, this is not your normal HHR and will be sought after in about 10 years... Car and Driver Magazine says it is a modern collectable. So much more about the HHR SS....

I had a Cobalt SS Turbocharged before going VW CC. I loved the power! I was able to achieve 390 HP with just bolt-ons and tune. It was easily one of the fastest cars on the road and I surprised a lot of people, but at the end of the day it was still a Cobalt and when I wasn't flooring it I knew it.

Man, I had a 2006 HHR LT with a 2.4. It was torquey then fell flat on its face after a sudden acceleration. But the dependability far exceed my expectations (12 years not a single oil leak or torn boots) I let soo many of my family and wife's family borrow it during the years of ownership. Then one day a hit and run ended our journey with it. I'm currently looking for a replacement. But this time, I'm going all out with an SS. 👍🏽

Yeah this is why it surprised a lot of people. The 2008+ Cobalt SS was turbocharged. It has the Soltice GXP and Sky Redline engine in it. 260HP 260TQ and Brembo brakes stock. Everyone I encountered thought I was supercharged which made the experience sweeter.

It is a niche car, for sure. Musicians like myself tend to like it (and who wouldn't, as it has enough cargo space for my entire 5-piece drum kit and its cases), but most people find it strange. I recommend trying a 5-speed (with the Limited Slip option, like mine)..it is night-and-day from the automatic. In fact, when I worked at a dealership the automatic HHR SS made me dislike it quite a bit (it needs 1-2 more gears in that automatic). At 6'2'' I have no comfort or visibility issues.

My dad used to have a 2006 LT, until 2016 when it finally broke and now he has a Mercedes GLK350, but my step grandma still has her HHR, still running fine, and the successor to the HHR was the Chevy Trax and Buick Envision
@86shelbyzofdoom11 жыл бұрын
It is extremely fun to drive though and has more than enough power to get around (I have trapped 96 mph in the quarter), and usually return 28 mpg average (by calculation, not the dash display). You are correct that the interior is typical GM slop, but the enjoyment from driving it far overshadows its shortcomings (so far my tally is an O2 sensor from my aftermarket exhaust, a broken sunroof wind screen, and a stabilizer bar end link.. 48000 miles on the clock)

When the HHR came out, it was a pretty neat looking vehicle. I liked it. My dad and step-mom each bought themselves one. A 2008 and 2006 respectively. They both had the 2.2L engine, which was buzzy and gutless. Chevy should have offered the 2.4L standard. I remember the steering had absolutely no feel. Very numb. The legroom up front was really poor, the visibility was atrocious with tiny windows and HUGE pillars. My dad got rid of his 2008 for a truck. My step-mom still has her 2006 with about 100k miles on it now and it sounds like it's on its last leg. It didn't hold up well at all. She's had tons of problems with it. Typical GM junk.

Not the coolest cars but super practical, made in America (kinda) and minimal issues. I have a 2006, not an SS but it does have the 2.4l and I have to say it surprises me for what it is, when you're going 40mph and punch it to make it through a red light or get on the freeway, the thing gets moving pretty good! Would definitely suggest a HHR to anybody looking to haul a fair amount of stuff or an Uber/Amazon Flex guy.

Bought the original as a family car back in '06 (yeah holy shit) and this car has held up. It has close to 150,000 miles on it and most of those coming from a driver who beats cars into the ground until they break. Only general maintenance and tires have kept this car going and going. It drove in Florida for 5 years, and has now been in Nebraska for nearly 5. Very reliable, stylish for some, ugly for others, inexpensive, and surprising.

It's funny how they always dog American cars with the "cheap plastic interior comments!" My Toyota badged Pontiac vibe has a lot of plastic in it as well, and the logically speaking "not everyone needs to have suede dashboards, and full leather interior!" Not everyone in America needs to have more of a car than they need! So who cares about it having plastic interior pieces, if we learn to live within our means then you'd see more people driving cars with plastic interiors. I had a cobalt SS, and loved it except the fuel economy, but what do you expect with forced induction.
